    Symmetry Protected Topological phases and Generalized Cohomology

We review Kitaev's argument that SPT phases are classified by a generalized cohomology theory, valued in the spectrum of gapped physical systems. We propose a concrete description of that spectrum and of the corresponding cohomology theory.     DETERMINATION OF PCB ELIMINATION COEFFICIENTS IN ROUND GOBY AND TUBENOSE GOBY

    Whole-body elimination coefficients of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in two Great Lakes invasive fish species, round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) and tubenose goby (Proterorhinus semilunaris). Elimination rates were determined for a set of model PCB congeners (n=12 congeners) dosed to fish by intraperitoneal injection and allowed to depurate at a temperature of 21.4oC for 90 d. Eight PCBs (PCB 6, 13, 21, 57, 62, 68, 89, 112 and 125) exhibited significant elimination by round goby and had corresponding half lives ranging from 13 to 39.8 d. For tubenose goby, four congeners (PCBs 21, 58, 62 and 68) exhibited significant elimination with half lives in the range from 18.8 to 48.8 d. Whole-body elimination rate coefficients were significantly higher for round gobies compared to tubenose goby.     Delamination and recycling of Archaean crust caused by gravitational instabilities

    Mantle temperatures during the Archaean eon were higher than today. As a consequence, the primary crust formed at the time is thought to have been extensive, thick and magnesium rich, and underlain by a highly residual mantle1. However, the preserved volume of this crust today is low, implying that much of it was recycled back into the mantle2. Furthermore, Archaean crust exposed today is composed mostly of tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite, indicative of a hydrated, low-magnesium basalt source3, suggesting that they were not directly generated from a magnesium-rich primary crust. Here we present thermodynamic calculations that indicate that the stable mineral assemblages expected to form at the base of a 45-km-thick, fully hydrated and anhydrous magnesium-rich crust are denser than the underlying, complementary residual mantle. We use two-dimensional geodynamic models to show that the base of magmatically over-thickened magnesium-rich crust, whether fully hydrated or anhydrous, would have been gravitationally unstable at mantle temperatures greater than 1,500–1,550?°C. The dense crust would drip down into the mantle, generating a return flow of asthenospheric mantle that melts to create more primary crust. Continued melting of over-thickened and dripping magnesium-rich crust, combined with fractionation of primary magmas, may have produced the hydrated magnesium-poor basalts necessary to source tonalite–trondhjemite–granodiorite melts.     Comparison of thermal tolerance and standard metabolic rate of two Great Lakes invasive fish species

    Round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) and western tubenose goby (Proterorhinus semilunaris) invaded the Laurentian Great Lakes at approximately the same time and area yet have shown substantial differences in their post-invasion success with more rapid establishment and development of much larger abundances of round goby populations throughout the invaded habitat. In this study, we compared differences in physiological performance (thermal tolerance and standard metabolic rate) between round and tubenose goby collected from the Huron-Erie corridor. Tubenose goby were observed to have lower thermal tolerance but exhibited similar standard metabolic rate across environmental temperatures compared to round goby. At temperatures exceeding 31oC, tubenose goby demonstrated significantly higher mortalities and shorter times to death relative to round goby. The observed differences in thermal tolerance were consistent with differences in the native geographic ranges observed for each species at their southern ranges. The observed differences in physiological performance combined with species differences in other life history traits such body size, reproduction, feeding ecology and habitat affiliation may also explain differences in the invasiveness experienced by these two Great Lakes invasive fish including a greater ability of round gobies to occupy extreme habitats with large water temperature fluctuations

    High-Spectral Resolution Dark Holes: Concept, Results, and Promise

    Next generation high contrast imaging instruments face a challenging trade off: they will be required to deliver data with high spectral resolution at a relatively fast cadence (minutes) and across a wide field of view (arcseconds). For instruments that employ focal plane wavefront sensing and therefore require super-Nyquist sampling, these requirements cannot simultaneously be met with a traditional lenslet integral field spectrograph (IFU). For the SPIDERS pathfinder instrument, we are demonstrating an imaging Fourier transform spectrograph (IFTS) that offers a different set of tradeoffs than a lenslet IFU, delivering up to R20,000 spectral resolution across a dark hole. We present preliminary results from the SPIDERS IFTS including a chromaticity analysis of its dark hole and demonstrate a spectral differential imaging (SDI) improvement of up to 40 ×\times, and a first application of spectro-coherent differential imaging, combining both coherent differential imaging (CDI) and SDI.Comment: Submitted to the proceedings of adaptive optics for extremely large telescopes

    Joint analysis of stressors and ecosystem services to enhance restoration effectiveness

    With increasing pressure placed on natural systems by growing human populations, both scientists and resource managers need a better understanding of the relationships between cumulative stress from human activities and valued ecosystem services. Societies often seek to mitigate threats to these services through large-scale, costly restoration projects, such as the over one billion dollar Great Lakes Restoration Initiative currently underway. To help inform these efforts, we merged high-resolution spatial analyses of environmental stressors with mapping of ecosystem services for all five Great Lakes. Cumulative ecosystem stress is highest in near-shore habitats, but also extends offshore in Lakes Erie, Ontario, and Michigan. Variation in cumulative stress is driven largely by spatial concordance among multiple stressors, indicating the importance of considering all stressors when planning restoration activities. In addition, highly stressed areas reflect numerous different combinations of stressors rather than a single suite of problems, suggesting that a detailed understanding of the stressors needing alleviation could improve restoration planning. We also find that many important areas for fisheries and recreation are subject to high stress, indicating that ecosystem degradation could be threatening key services. Current restoration efforts have targeted high-stress sites almost exclusively, but generally without knowledge of the full range of stressors affecting these locations or differences among sites in service provisioning. Our results demonstrate that joint spatial analysis of stressors and ecosystem services can provide a critical foundation for maximizing social and ecological benefits from restoration investments. www.pnas.org/lookup/suppl/doi:10.1073/pnas.1213841110/-/DCSupplementa

    Duration of obesity exposure between ages 10 and 40 years and its relationship with cardiometabolic disease risk factors: A cohort study.

    BACKGROUND: Individuals with obesity do not represent a homogeneous group in terms of cardiometabolic risk. Using 3 nationally representative British birth cohorts, we investigated whether the duration of obesity was related to heterogeneity in cardiometabolic risk. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We used harmonised body mass index (BMI) and cardiometabolic disease risk factor data from 20,746 participants (49.1% male and 97.2% white British) enrolled in 3 British birth cohort studies: the 1946 National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD), the 1958 National Child Development Study (NCDS), and the 1970 British Cohort Study (BCS70). Within each cohort, individual life course BMI trajectories were created between 10 and 40 years of age, and from these, age of obesity onset, duration spent obese (range 0 to 30 years), and cumulative obesity severity were derived. Obesity duration was examined in relation to a number of cardiometabolic disease risk factors collected in mid-adulthood: systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c). A greater obesity duration was associated with worse values for all cardiometabolic disease risk factors. The strongest association with obesity duration was for HbA1c: HbA1c levels in those with obesity for <5 years were relatively higher by 5% (95% CI: 4, 6), compared with never obese, increasing to 20% (95% CI: 17, 23) higher in those with obesity for 20 to 30 years. When adjustment was made for obesity severity, the association with obesity duration was largely attenuated for SBP, DBP, and HDL-C. For HbA1c, however, the association with obesity duration persisted, independent of obesity severity. Due to pooling of 3 cohorts and thus the availability of only a limited number harmonised variables across cohorts, our models included adjustment for only a small number of potential confounding variables, meaning there is a possibility of residual confounding. CONCLUSIONS: Given that the obesity epidemic is characterised by a much earlier onset of obesity and consequently a greater lifetime exposure, our findings suggest that health policy recommendations aimed at preventing early obesity onset, and therefore reducing lifetime exposure, may help reduce the risk of diabetes, independently of obesity severity. However, to test the robustness of our observed associations, triangulation of evidence from different epidemiological approaches (e.g., mendelian randomization and negative control studies) should be obtained

    Extinction Corrected Star Formation Rates Empirically Derived from Ultraviolet-Optical Colors

    Using a sample of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic catalog with measured star-formation rates (SFRs) and ultraviolet (UV) photometry from the GALEX Medium Imaging Survey, we derived empirical linear correlations between the SFR to UV luminosity ratio and the UV-optical colors of blue sequence galaxies. The relations provide a simple prescription to correct UV data for dust attenuation that best reconciles the SFRs derived from UV and emission line data. The method breaks down for the red sequence population as well as for very blue galaxies such as the local ``supercompact'' UV luminous galaxies and the majority of high redshift Lyman Break Galaxies which form a low attenuation sequence of their own.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in the ApJS GALEX special issu

    Treatment of infections in cancer patients : an update from the neutropenia, infection and myelosuppression study group of the Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC)

    INTRODUCTION : Patients with hematological and advanced solid malignancies have acquired immune dysfunction, often exacerbated by treatment, posing a significant risk for the development of infections. This review evaluates the utility of current clinical and treatment guidelines, in the setting of management of infections in cancer patients. AREAS COVERED : These include causes of infection in cancer patients, management of patients with high-risk and low-risk febrile neutropenia, management of low-risk patients in an outpatient setting, the role of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in the prevention and treatment of neutropenia-related infections, management of lung infections in various clinical settings, and emerging challenges surrounding the risk of infection in cancer patients treated with novel treatments. The literature search was performed by accessing PubMed and other databases, focusing on published clinical trials of relevant anti-cancer agents and diseases, primarily covering the recent past, but also including several key studies published during the last decade and, somewhat earlier in a few cases.
