Theoretical Spectra and Light Curves of Close-in Extrasolar Giant Planets and Comparison with Data
We present theoretical atmosphere, spectral, and light-curve models for
extrasolar giant planets (EGPs) undergoing strong irradiation for which {\it
Spitzer} planet/star contrast ratios or light curves have been published (circa
June 2007). These include HD 209458b, HD 189733b, TrES-1, HD 149026b, HD
179949b, and And b. By comparing models with data, we find that a
number of EGP atmospheres experience thermal inversions and have stratospheres.
This is particularly true for HD 209458b, HD 149026b, and And b.
This finding translates into qualitative changes in the planet/star contrast
ratios at secondary eclipse and in close-in EGP orbital light curves. Moreover,
the presence of atmospheric water in abundance is fully consistent with all the
{\it Spitzer} data for the measured planets. For planets with stratospheres,
water absorption features invert into emission features and mid-infrared fluxes
can be enhanced by a factor of two. In addition, the character of near-infrared
planetary spectra can be radically altered. We derive a correlation between the
importance of such stratospheres and the stellar flux on the planet, suggesting
that close-in EGPs bifurcate into two groups: those with and without
stratospheres. From the finding that TrES-1 shows no signs of a stratosphere,
while HD 209458b does, we estimate the magnitude of this stellar flux
breakpoint. We find that the heat redistribution parameter, P, for the
family of close-in EGPs assumes values from 0.1 to 0.4. This paper
provides a broad theoretical context for the future direct characterization of

Functional Cellular Anti-Tumor Mechanisms are Augmented by Genetic Proteoglycan Targeting.
While recent research points to the importance of glycans in cancer immunity, knowledge on functional mechanisms is lacking. In lung carcinoma among other tumors, anti-tumor immunity is suppressed; and while some recent therapies boost T-cell mediated immunity by targeting immune-checkpoint pathways, robust responses are uncommon. Augmenting tumor antigen-specific immune responses by endogenous dendritic cells (DCs) is appealing from a specificity standpoint, but challenging. Here, we show that restricting a heparan sulfate (HS) loss-of-function mutation in the HS sulfating enzyme Ndst1 to predominantly conventional DCs (Ndst1f/f CD11cCre+ mutation) results in marked inhibition of Lewis lung carcinoma growth along with increased tumor-associated CD8+ T cells. In mice deficient in a major DC HS proteoglycan (syndecan-4), splenic CD8+ T cells showed increased anti-tumor cytotoxic responses relative to controls. Studies examining Ndst1f/f CD11cCre + mutants revealed that mutation was associated with an increase in anti-tumor cytolysis using either splenic CD8+ T cells or tumor-infiltrating (TIL) CD8+ T cells purified ex-vivo, and tested in pooled effector-to-target cytolytic assays against tumor cells from respective animals. On glycan compositional analysis, HS purified from Ndst1f/f CD11cCre + mutant DCs had reduced overall sulfation, including reduced sulfation of a tri-sulfated disaccharide species that was intriguingly abundant on wildtype DC HS. Interestingly, antigen presentation in the context of major histocompatibility complex class-I (MHC-I) was enhanced in mutant DCs, with more striking effects in the setting of HS under-sulfation, pointing to a likely regulatory role by sulfated glycans at the antigen/MHC-I - T-cell interface; and possibly future opportunities to improve antigen-specific T cell responses by immunologic targeting of HS proteoglycans in cancer
Observations of T Tauri Disks at Sub-AU Radii: Implications for Magnetospheric Accretion and Planet Formation
We determine inner disk sizes and temperatures for four solar-type (1-2
M) classical T Tauri stars (AS 207A, V2508 Oph, AS 205A, and PX Vul)
using 2.2 m observations from the Keck Interferometer. Nearly
contemporaneous near-IR adaptive optics imaging photometry, optical photometry,
and high-dispersion optical spectroscopy are used to distinguish contributions
from the inner disks and central stars in the interferometric observations. In
addition, the spectroscopic and photometric data provide estimates of stellar
properties, mass accretion rates, and disk co-rotation radii. We model our
interferometric and photometric data in the context of geometrically flat
accretion disk models with inner holes, and flared disks with puffed-up inner
walls. Models incorporating puffed-up inner disk walls generally provide better
fits to the data, similar to previous results for higher-mass Herbig Ae stars.
Our measured inner disk sizes are larger than disk truncation radii predicted
by magnetospheric accretion models, with larger discrepancies for sources with
higher mass accretion rates. We suggest that our measured sizes correspond to
dust sublimation radii, and that optically-thin gaseous material may extend
further inward to the magnetospheric truncation radii. Finally, our inner disk
measurements constrain the location of terrestrial planet formation as well as

The Angular Momentum Content and Evolution of Class I and Flat-Spectrum Protostars
We report on the angular momentum content of heavily embedded protostars
based on our analysis of the projected rotation velocities (v sin i s) of 38
Class I/flat spectrum young stellar objects presented by Doppmann et al (2005).
After correcting for projection effects, we find that infrared-selected Class
I/flat spectrum objects rotate significantly more quickly (median equatorial
rotation velocity ~ 38 km/sec) than Classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs; median
equatorial rotation velocity ~ 18 km/sec) in the Rho Ophiuchi and
Taurus-Aurigae regions. The detected difference in rotation speeds between
Class I/flat spectrum sources and CTTSs proves difficult to explain without
some mechanism which transfers angular momentum out of the protostar between
the two phases. Assuming Class I/flat spectrum sources possess physical
characteristics (M_*,R_*,B_*) typical of pre-main sequence stars, fully disk
locked Class I objects should have co-rotation radii within their protostellar
disks that match well (within 30%) with the predicted magnetic coupling radii
of Shu et al (1994). The factor of two difference in rotation rates between
Class I/flat spectrum and CTTS sources, when interpreted in the context of disk
locking models, also imply a factor of 5 or greater difference in mass

Can climate models capture the structure of extratropical cyclones?
Composites of wind speeds, equivalent potential temperature, mean sea level pressure, vertical velocity, and relative humidity have been produced for the 100 most intense extratropical cyclones in the Northern Hemisphere winter for the 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) and the high resolution global environment model (HiGEM). Features of conceptual models of cyclone structure—the warm conveyor belt, cold conveyor belt, and dry intrusion—have been identified in the composites from ERA-40 and compared to HiGEM. Such features can be identified in the composite fields despite the smoothing that occurs in the compositing process. The surface features and the three-dimensional structure of the cyclones in HiGEM compare very well with those from ERA-40. The warm conveyor belt is identified in the temperature and wind fields as a mass of warm air undergoing moist isentropic uplift and is very similar in ERA-40 and HiGEM. The rate of ascent is lower in HiGEM, associated with a shallower slope of the moist isentropes in the warm sector. There are also differences in the relative humidity fields in the warm conveyor belt. In ERA-40, the high values of relative humidity are strongly associated with the moist isentropic uplift, whereas in HiGEM these are not so strongly associated. The cold conveyor belt is identified as rearward flowing air that undercuts the warm conveyor belt and produces a low-level jet, and is very similar in HiGEM and ERA-40. The dry intrusion is identified in the 500-hPa vertical velocity and relative humidity. The structure of the dry intrusion compares well between HiGEM and ERA-40 but the descent is weaker in HiGEM because of weaker along-isentrope flow behind the composite cyclone. HiGEM’s ability to represent the key features of extratropical cyclone structure can give confidence in future predictions from this model
The transformative potential of reflective diaries for elite English cricketers
The sport of cricket has a history of its players suffering from mental health issues. The psychological study of cricket and, in particular, the attendant demands of participating at an elite level has not previously received rigorous academic attention. This study explored ten elite male cricketers’ experiences of keeping a daily reflective diary for one month during the competitive season. The aim was to assess how valuable qualitative diaries are in this field. Participants were interviewed regarding their appraisal of the methodology as a self‐help tool that could assist coping with performance pressures and wider life challenges. Three outcomes were revealed: first, that diary keeping was an effective opportunity to reflect upon the past and enhance one’s self (both as an individual and a performer); second, that diary keeping acted as a form of release that allowed participants to progress; and third, that diary keeping allowed participants to discover personal patterns of success that increased the likeliness of optimum performance
CT features of pulmonary arterial hypertension and its major subtypes: a systematic CT evaluation of 292 patients from the ASPIRE Registry
We evaluated the prevalence and prognostic value of CT-pulmonary angiographic (CTPA) measures in 292 treatment naive patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Pulmonary artery calcification (13%) and thrombus (10%) were exclusively seen in PAH-congenital heart disease. Oesophageal dilation (46%) was most frequent in PAH-systemic sclerosis. Ground glass opacification (GGO) (41%), pericardial effusion (38%), lymphadenopathy (19%) and pleural effusion (11%) were common. On multivariate analysis, inferior vena caval area, the presence of pleural effusion and septal lines predicted outcome. In PAH, CTPA provides diagnostic and prognostic information. In addition, the presence of GGO on a CT performed for unexplained breathlessness should alert the physician to the possibility of PAH
Reflections on a 'virtual' practice development unit: changing practice through identity development
Aims. This paper draws together the personal thoughts and critical reflections of key people involved in the establishment of a ‘virtual’ practice development unit of clinical nurse specialists in the south of England. Background. This practice development unit is ‘virtual’ in that it is not constrained by physical or specialty boundaries. It became the first group of Trust-wide clinical nurse specialists to be accredited in the UK as a practice development unit in 2004. Design and methods. The local university was asked to facilitate the accreditation process via 11 two-hour audio-recorded learning sessions. Critical reflections from practice development unit members, leaders and university staff were written 12 months after successful accreditation, and the framework of their content analysed. Findings and discussion. Practice development was seen as a way for the clinical nurse specialists to realize their potential for improving patient care by transforming care practice in a collaborative, interprofessional and evolutionary manner. The practice development unit provided a means for these nurses to analyse their role and function within the Trust. Roberts’ identity development model for nursing serves as a useful theoretical underpinning for the reflections contained in this paper. Conclusions. These narratives provide another example of nurses making the effort to shape and contribute to patient care through organizational redesign. This group of nurses began to realize that the structure of the practice development unit process provided them with the means to analyse their role and function within the organization and, as they reflected on this structure, their behaviour began to change. Relevance to clinical practice. Evidence from these reflections supports the view that practice development unit participants have secured a positive and professional identity and are, therefore, better able to improve the patient experience
