Climate dynamics experiments using a GCM simulations
The study of surface-atmosphere interactions has begun with studies of the effect of altering the ocean and land boundaries. A ten year simulation of global climate using observed sea surface temperature anomalies has begun using the NCAR Community Climate Model (CCM1). The results for low resolution (R15) were computed for the first 8 years of the simulation and compared with the observed surface temperatures and the MSU (Microwave Sounding Unit) observations of tropospheric temperature. A simulation at higher resolution (T42) was done to ascertain the effect of interactive soil hydrology on the system response to an El Nino sea surface temperature perturbation. Galaxies Probing Galaxies at High Resolution: Co-Rotating Gas Associated with a Milky Way Analog at z=0.4
We present results on gas flows in the halo of a Milky Way-like galaxy at
z=0.413 based on high-resolution spectroscopy of a background galaxy. This is
the first study of circumgalactic gas at high spectral resolution towards an
extended background source (i.e., a galaxy rather than a quasar). Using
longslit spectroscopy of the foreground galaxy, we observe spatially extended H
alpha emission with circular rotation velocity v=270 km/s. Using echelle
spectroscopy of the background galaxy, we detect Mg II and Fe II absorption
lines at impact parameter rho=27 kpc that are blueshifted from systemic in the
sense of the foreground galaxy's rotation. The strongest absorber EW(2796) =
0.90 A has an estimated column density (N_H>10^19 cm-2) and line-of-sight
velocity dispersion (sigma=17 km/s) that are consistent with the observed
properties of extended H I disks in the local universe. Our analysis of the
rotation curve also suggests that this r=30 kpc gaseous disk is warped with
respect to the stellar disk. In addition, we detect two weak Mg II absorbers in
the halo with small velocity dispersions (sigma<10 km/s). While the exact
geometry is unclear, one component is consistent with an extraplanar gas cloud
near the disk-halo interface that is co-rotating with the disk, and the other
is consistent with a tidal feature similar to the Magellanic Stream. We can
place lower limits on the cloud sizes (l>0.4 kpc) for these absorbers given the
extended nature of the background source. We discuss the implications of these
results for models of the geometry and kinematics of gas in the circumgalactic

Fiddler crabs and their above-ground sedimentary structures: a review
Fiddler crabs are abundant, semi-terrestrial crustaceans inhabiting tropical, subtropical and warm temperate coasts worldwide. Some species build above-ground sedimentary structures at or near the opening to their burrows. The functions and shapes of these constructions vary interspecifically and according to the sex of the builder. Here, we compile the dispersed reports on these structures, suggest uniform naming for different shapes, review explanations for their functions and explore associations between the attributes of builders and their structures. We found that 47 fiddler crab species build at least one type (or subtype) of structure, including chimneys, hoods, pillars, semidomes, mudballs, and rims. Sedimentary structures show a strong association with sediment type as well as builder front type, genus and sex, but not with fiddler crab clade. Experimental studies have revealed distinct, sometimes multiple functions for some of these structures (e.g., female attraction, reduction of aggressive behavior and/or landmark orientation); however, most studies have been observational leaving the proposed functions of these structures for many species untested. Both field and laboratory experiments as well as observational studies can help us to better understand these sedimentary structures and their role in fiddler crab behavior and ecology.publishedVersio
A Preference for a Sexual Signal Keeps Females Safe
Predation is generally thought to constrain sexual selection by female choice and limit the evolution of conspicuous sexual signals. Under high predation risk, females usually become less choosy, because they reduce their exposure to their predators by reducing the extent of their mate searching. However, predation need not weaken sexual selection if, under high predation risk, females exhibit stronger preferences for males that use conspicuous signals that help females avoid their predators. We tested this prediction in the fiddler crab Uca terpsichores by increasing females' perceived predation risk from crab-eating birds and measuring the attractiveness of a courtship signal that females use to find mates. The sexual signal is an arching mound of sand that males build at the openings of their burrows to which they attract females for mating. We found that the greater the risk, the more attractive were males with those structures. The benefits of mate preferences for sexual signals are usually thought to be linked to males' reproductive contributions to females or their young. Our study provides the first evidence that a female preference for a sexual signal can yield direct survival benefits by keeping females safe as they search for mates
Common Sunflower Seedling Emergence across the U.S. Midwest
Predictions of weed emergence can be used by practitioners to schedule POST weed management operations. Common sunflower seed from Kansas was used at six Midwestern U.S. sites to examine the variability that 16 climates had on common sunflower emergence. Nonlinear mixed effects models, using a flexible sigmoidal Weibull function that included thermal time, hydrothermal time, and a modified hydrothermal time (with accumulation starting from January 1 of each year), were developed to describe the emergence data. An iterative method was used to select an optimal base temperature (Tb) and base and ceiling soil matric potentials (ψb and ψc) that resulted in a best-fit regional model. The most parsimonious model, based on Akaike\u27s information criterion (AIC), resulted when Tb = 4.4 C, and ψb = −20000 kPa. Deviations among model fits for individual site years indicated a negative relationship (r = −0.75; P \u3c 0.001) between the duration of seedling emergence and growing degree days (Tb = 10 C) from October (fall planting) to March. Thus, seeds exposed to warmer conditions from fall burial to spring emergence had longer emergence periods
Substance Use Prevention Services in Juvenile Justice and Behavioral Health: Results from a National Survey
BACKGROUND: This study examined the national availability of substance use prevention (SUP) within juvenile justice (JJ) and their primary behavioral health (BH) providers, and the relationships between the availability of SUP and agency-level measures of organizational structure, staffing, and youth characteristics. A three-stage national probability sampling process was used to select participants for a national survey that included, among other facets of community supervision (CS) and BH practices, questions on agency characteristics, youth characteristics, whether the agency/provider directly provided SUP services, and whether the agency/provider directly provided substance use and/or mental health treatment. This paper focuses on SUP services along with agency/provider and youth characteristics related to providing SUP.
RESULTS: The response rate for both CS agencies (n = 195) and BH providers (n = 271) was 96%. Complex samples logistic regression initially examined univariate associations of each variable and identified candidates for a final multivariate model. Overall, only one-third of CS and BH providers reported offering SUP services, with BH providers being significantly more likely than CS agencies to provide SUP services. In addition, likelihood of SUP was significantly lower among agencies where the substance use distribution of the caseload was below the median. Controlling for master\u27s level staff and the substance use distribution, CS agencies were about 67% less likely to offer SUP when compared to BH providers.
CONCLUSIONS: Given the high rates of substance use among justice-involved youth and that substance use is an established risk for several negative behaviors, outcomes, and health conditions, these findings suggest that evidence-based prevention services should likely be expanded in justice settings, and perhaps included as part of CS programs, even when youth do not initially present with SU service needs
Whole genomic sequence analysis of \u3ci\u3eBacillus infantis\u3c/i\u3e: defining the genetic blueprint of strain NRRL B-14911, an emerging cardiopathogenic microbe
Background: We recently reported the identification of Bacillus sp. NRRL B-14911 that induces heart autoimmunity by generating cardiac-reactive T cells through molecular mimicry. This marine bacterium was originally isolated from the Gulf of Mexico, but no associations with human diseases were reported. Therefore, to characterize its biological and medical significance, we sought to determine and analyze the complete genome sequence of Bacillus sp. NRRL B-14911.
Results: Based on the phylogenetic analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, sequence analysis of the 16S-23S rDNA intergenic transcribed spacers, phenotypic microarray, and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-offlight mass spectrometry, we propose that this organism belongs to the species Bacillus infantis, previously shown to be associated with sepsis in a newborn child. Analysis of the complete genome of Bacillus sp. NRRL B-14911 revealed several virulence factors including adhesins, invasins, colonization factors, siderophores and transporters. Likewise, the bacterial genome encodes a wide range of methyl transferases, transporters, enzymatic and biochemical pathways, and insertion sequence elements that are distinct from other closely related bacilli.
Conclusions: The complete genome sequence of Bacillus sp. NRRL B-14911 provided in this study may facilitate genetic manipulations to assess gene functions associated with bacterial survival and virulence. Additionally, this bacterium may serve as a useful tool to establish a disease model that permits systematic analysis of autoimmune events in various susceptible rodent strains
The Space Density of Intermediate-redshift, Extremely Compact, Massive Starburst Galaxies

This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, to view a copy of the license, see: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/We present a measurement of the intrinsic space density of intermediate-redshift (z ∼ 0.5), massive (M * ∼ 1011 M ⊙), compact (R e ∼ 100 pc) starburst (ΣSFR ∼ 1000 M ⊙ yr−1 kpc−1) galaxies with tidal features indicative of them having undergone recent major mergers. A subset of them host kiloparsec-scale, > 1000 km s−1 outflows and have little indication of AGN activity, suggesting that extreme star formation can be a primary driver of large-scale feedback. The aim for this paper is to calculate their space density so we can place them in a better cosmological context. We do this by empirically modeling the stellar populations of massive, compact starburst galaxies. We determine the average timescale on which galaxies that have recently undergone an extreme nuclear starburst would be targeted and included in our spectroscopically selected sample. We find that massive, compact starburst galaxies targeted by our criteria would be selectable for ∼148−24+27 Myr and have an intrinsic space density nCS∼(1.1−0.3+0.5)×10−6Mpc−3 . This space density is broadly consistent with our z ∼ 0.5 compact starbursts being the most extremely compact and star-forming low-redshift analogs of the compact star-forming galaxies in the early universe, as well as them being the progenitors to a fraction of intermediate-redshift, post-starburst, and compact quiescent galaxies.Peer reviewe
