    Dynamic Wettability Properties of Single Wood Pulp Fibers and Their Relationship to Absorbency

    The Wilhelmy technique is used to measure dynamic wetting properties of single wood pulp fibers. Several different fiber types are examined, differing both in species and processing conditions. It is found that there are significant differences in water wettability of these fibers because of varying fiber surface chemistry. The compilation of a "dynamic wettability profile" for complex materials such as pulp fibers is advocated in order to characterize more fully the behavior of these materials in wetting situations. The bulk absorbency performance of three-dimensionally random pads of these fibers is found to be directly related to the initial advancing contact angles of single fibers. The measurement of single fiber wetting properties allows the separation of structural factors from surface chemical factors in considering the absorbency of a random network

    The relationship between lateralization patterns from sequence based motor tasks and hemispheric speech dominance

    Objective: Skilled motor praxis and speech production display marked asymmetries at the individual and the population level, favouring the right hand and the left hemisphere respectively. Theories suggesting a common processing mechanism between praxis and speech are supported by evidence that shared neural architecture underlies both functions. Despite advances in understanding the neurobiology of this left-hemisphere specialisation the cortical networks linking these two functions are rarely investigated on a behavioural level. Method: This study deploys functional Transcranial Doppler (fTCD) ultrasound to directly measure hemispheric activation during skilled manual praxis tasks shown to be correlated to hemispheric speech lateralisation indices. In a new paradigm we test the hypothesis that praxis tasks are highly dependent on the left hemisphere's capacity for processing sequential information will be better correlated with direction and strength of hemispheric speech lateralisation Results: Across two experiments we firstly show that only certain praxis tasks (pegboard and coin-rotation) correlated with direct measurements of speech lateralisation despite shared properties across all tasks tested. Secondly, through novel imaging of hemispheric activation during praxis, results showed that the pegboard differed in the lateralisation pattern created and furthermore that it was significantly related to speech laterality indices, which was not the case for either of the other two tasks. Conclusion: These results are discussed in terms of a lateralised speech-praxis control mechanism and demonstrates that measurements of motor paradigms through the use of fTCD are reliable enough to provide a new insight to the behavioural relationship been speech and handedness

    Testing the relationship between lateralization on sequence-based motor tasks and language laterality using an online battery

    Studies have highlighted an association between motor laterality and speech production laterality. It is thought that common demands for sequential processing may underlie this association. However, most studies in this area have relied on relatively small samples and have infrequently explored the reliability of the tools used to assess lateralization. We, therefore, established the validity and reliability of an online battery measuring sequence-based motor laterality and language laterality before exploring the associations between laterality indices on language and motor tasks. The online battery was completed by 621 participants, 52 of whom returned to complete the battery a second time. The three motor tasks included in the battery showed good between-session reliability (r ≥ .78) and were lateralized in concordance with hand preference. The novel measure of speech production laterality was left lateralized at population level as predicted, but reliability was less satisfactory (r = .62). We found no evidence of an association between sequence-based motor laterality and language laterality. Those with a left-hand preference were more strongly lateralized on motor tasks requiring midline crossing; this effect was not observed in right-handers. We conclude that there is little evidence of the co-lateralization of language and sequence-based motor skill on this battery

    On Infrared Excesses Associated With Li-Rich K Giants

    Infrared (IR) excesses around K-type red giants (RGs) have previously been discovered using IRAS data, and past studies have suggested a link between RGs with overabundant Li and IR excesses, implying the ejection of circumstellar shells or disks. We revisit the question of IR excesses around RGs using higher spatial resolution IR data, primarily from WISE. Our goal was to elucidate the link between three unusual RG properties: fast rotation, enriched Li, and IR excess. We have 316 targets thought to be K giants, about 40% of which we take to be Li-rich. In 24 cases with previous detections of IR excess at low spatial resolution, we believe that source confusion is playing a role, in that either (a) the source that is bright in the optical is not responsible for the IR flux, or (b) there is more than one source responsible for the IR flux as measured in IRAS. We looked for IR excesses in the remaining sources, identifying 28 that have significant IR excesses by ~20 um (with possible excesses for 2 additional sources). There appears to be an intriguing correlation in that the largest IR excesses are all in Li-rich K giants, though very few Li-rich K giants have IR excesses (large or small). These largest IR excesses also tend to be found in the fastest rotators. There is no correlation of IR excess with the carbon isotopic ratio, 12C/13C. IR excesses by 20 um, though relatively rare, are at least twice as common among our sample of Li-rich K giants. If dust shell production is a common by-product of Li enrichment mechanisms, these observations suggest that the IR excess stage is very short-lived, which is supported by theoretical calculations. Conversely, the Li-enrichment mechanism may only occasionally produce dust, and an additional parameter (e.g., rotation) may control whether or not a shell is ejected.Comment: 73 pages, 21 figures (some of which substantially degraded to meet arXiv file size requirements), accepted to AJ.     The Work of the Course: validity and reliability in assessing English Literature

    © 2017 National Association for the Teaching of English This article reflects on the values and practices of a revolutionary UK A level (senior secondary) course that achieved a high degree of validity and reliability in assessing the study of English literature. John Hodgson and Bill Greenwell were involved in its teaching and assessment from an early stage, and Greenwell's comments on an early draft of the article have been incorporated. The practice of literary response enshrined in the course was based on a striking application of “personal response” to literature, gave students opportunities to show capability in studying and writing a range of literary styles and genres, and engaged teachers regionally and nationally in a developed professional community of practice. It remains a touchstone of quality as well as of innovation in English curriculum and assessment

    Embodied conversations: Performance and the design of a robotic dancing partner

    This paper reports insights gained from an exploration of performance-based techniques to improve the design of relationships between people and responsive machines. It draws on the Emergent Objects project and specifically addresses notions of embodiment as employed in the field of performance as a means to prototype and develop a robotic agent, SpiderCrab, designed to promote expressive interaction of device and human dancer, in order to achieve ‘performative merging’. The significance of the work is to bring further knowledge of embodiment to bear on the development of human-technological interaction in general. In doing so, it draws on discursive and interpretive methods of research widely used in the field of performance but not yet obviously aligned with some orthodox paradigms and practices within design research. It also posits the design outcome as an ‘objectile’ in the sense that a continuous and potentially divergent iteration of prototypes is envisaged, rather than a singular final product.
