Numerical modeling of periodic pumping tests in wells penetrating a heterogeneous aquifer
This study investigated how to utilize multiple frequency components of pressure data from periodic pulse tests to estimate the intra-well permeability and compressibility distribution and also the presence of heterogeneities in a real field case. Periodic well testing is a technique in which injection or production pulses of a fluid are applied to a well in a periodic fashion. One of its main advantages is that ongoing operations do not have to be interrupted during the test as the superposed harmonic components can be identified using Fourier analysis. Further, modeling calculations are much faster than calculations in the time domain as no time-stepping is required and only the frequencies observed in the test need to be evaluated. We applied an earlier developed numerical code in the frequency domain to evaluate periodic-test results in a shallow aquifer and obtained a good match between data and calculations. The interpreted formation heterogeneity is in line with the local geology. Joints of various orientations constitute the main hydraulic conduits of the tested subsurface but they do not directly connect the wells. Thus communication between the wells has to be established through low-permeability features. The interwell periodic testing has corroborated the geological understanding of the aquifer and helped understanding the fluid flow pattern
Associated factors and comorbidities in patients with pyoderma gangrenosum in Germany: a retrospective multicentric analysis in 259 patients
Background: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rarely diagnosed ulcerative neutrophilic dermatosis with unknown origin that has been poorly characterized in clinical studies so far. Consequently there have been significant discussions about its associated factors and comorbidities. The aim of our multicenter study was to analyze current data from patients in dermatologic wound care centers in Germany in order to describe associated factors and comorbidities in patients with PG. Methods: Retrospective clinical investigation of patients with PG from dermatologic wound care centers in Germany. Results: We received data from 259 patients with PG from 20 different dermatologic wound care centers in Germany. Of these 142 (54.8\%) patients were female, 117 (45.2\%) were male; with an age range of 21 to 95 years, and a mean of 58 years. In our patient population we found 45.6\% with anemia, 44.8\% with endocrine diseases, 12.4\% with internal malignancies, 9.3\% with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and 4.3\% with elevated creatinine levels. Moreover 25.5\% of all patients had a diabetes mellitus with some aspects of potential association with the metabolic syndrome. Conclusions: Our study describes one of the world's largest populations with PG. Beside the well-known association with chronic bowel diseases and neoplasms, a potentially relevant new aspect is an association with endocrine diseases, in particular the metabolic syndrome, thyroid dysfunctions and renal disorders. Our findings represent clinically relevant new aspects. This may help to describe the patients' characteristics and help to understand the underlying pathophysiology in these often misdiagnosed patients
Genetic variation at CYP3A is associated with age at menarche and breast cancer risk : a case-control study
Abstract
Introduction
We have previously shown that a tag single nucleotide polymorphism (rs10235235), which maps to the CYP3A locus (7q22.1), was associated with a reduction in premenopausal urinary estrone glucuronide levels and a modest reduction in risk of breast cancer in women age ≤50 years.
Methods
We further investigated the association of rs10235235 with breast cancer risk in a large case control study of 47,346 cases and 47,570 controls from 52 studies participating in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium. Genotyping of rs10235235 was conducted using a custom Illumina Infinium array. Stratified analyses were conducted to determine whether this association was modified by age at diagnosis, ethnicity, age at menarche or tumor characteristics.
Results
We confirmed the association of rs10235235 with breast cancer risk for women of European ancestry but found no evidence that this association differed with age at diagnosis. Heterozygote and homozygote odds ratios (ORs) were OR = 0.98 (95% CI 0.94, 1.01; P = 0.2) and OR = 0.80 (95% CI 0.69, 0.93; P = 0.004), respectively (P
trend = 0.02). There was no evidence of effect modification by tumor characteristics. rs10235235 was, however, associated with age at menarche in controls (P
trend = 0.005) but not cases (P
trend = 0.97). Consequently the association between rs10235235 and breast cancer risk differed according to age at menarche (P
het = 0.02); the rare allele of rs10235235 was associated with a reduction in breast cancer risk for women who had their menarche age ≥15 years (ORhet = 0.84, 95% CI 0.75, 0.94; ORhom = 0.81, 95% CI 0.51, 1.30; P
trend = 0.002) but not for those who had their menarche age ≤11 years (ORhet = 1.06, 95% CI 0.95, 1.19, ORhom = 1.07, 95% CI 0.67, 1.72; P
trend = 0.29).
Conclusions
To our knowledge rs10235235 is the first single nucleotide polymorphism to be associated with both breast cancer risk and age at menarche consistent with the well-documented association between later age at menarche and a reduction in breast cancer risk. These associations are likely mediated via an effect on circulating hormone levels
Determination of Fracture Toughness of Mode I Fractures from Three-Point Bending Tests at Elevated Confining Pressures
Fracture toughness is one of the key parameters for the characterization of brittle rock fracturing. Yet, constraints on it mainly rest on measurements performed at ambient pressure, although rock fracturing frequently occurs at elevated pressures even in geotechnical applications. To address the lack of a generally accepted evaluation procedure for tests at elevated pressure we explored the conditions for initiation and propagation of mode I fractures in samples subjected to bending at elevated pressure by numerical modeling and analytical considerations of the involved angular moments. We derived an evaluation procedure and applied it to experimental observations for specimens with either a chevron or a single-edge notch of four different rocks (a granite, a limestone, a marble and a sandstone) subjected to three-point bending at confining pressures up to 30 MPa. Two sealing methods were considered. Specimens were either varnished or jacketed by a rubber tube, differing in whether pressure is allowed to build up inside the pre-fabricated notch or not, respectively. Irrespective of notch geometry and sealing method, the determined toughness values increase significantly with confining pressure. The apparent toughness determined for jacketed specimens is, however, larger than that for varnished specimens, for which toughness seems to reach a plateau with increasing pressure. The similarity of the pressure dependence of the toughness determined for varnished, i.e., uniformly pressurized, samples with that of other physical properties suggests that it is controlled by the closure of pre-existing micro-cracks; the absence of pressure dependence beyond some tens of MPa suggests that non-linearity effects may not be as severe at depths beyond a few kilometers as previously discussed. Evidence for the Heterogeneity of the Pore Structure of Rocks from Comparing the Results of Various Techniques for Measuring Hydraulic Properties
<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>We applied three oscillatory methods, the previously presented axial pore-pressure and pore-flow methods, and the laboratory application of the radial oscillatory pore-flow method, and performed steady-state flow-through experiments (Darcy tests), for comparison, in experiments on samples of Westerly granite and Wilkeson sandstone. The granite and the sandstone exhibit pore spaces dominated by micro-fractures and by the granular-medium character with a connected porosity of about 1 and 10 %, respectively. Permeability determined by the axial pore-pressure method shows the closest agreement with the results of the Darcy tests. Apparent porosity and drained modulus derived from specific storage capacity deviate from measured connected porosity and reference values, respectively. The observed deviations of the hydraulic properties between methods suggest that they bear information about the structure of the pore space. Only for the sandstone, anisotropy in hydraulic properties appears to contribute to differences between the results of the various methods. We argue that oscillatory testing provides three indicators for heterogeneity, period dependence, the relation between apparent and connected porosity, and the relation between amplitude ratio and apparent penetration depth, calculated from the simple scaling law for homogeneous materials. These indicators consistently classify the samples of Wilkeson sandstone as hydraulically homogeneous and those of Westerly granite as heterogeneous.</jats:p>

Applications of harmonic pulse testing to field cases
Harmonic pulse testing is a well testing technique in which the injection or production rate is varied in a periodic way. The pressure response to the imposed rates, both in the pulser well and in the observer wells, can be analyzed in the frequency domain to evaluate the reservoir properties. The advantages of this type of test are that dedicated well testing surface equipment is not required and that the test can be performed during ongoing field operations. In an earlier study we demonstrated that the harmonic pulse testing methodology can be used to evaluate the effective permeability to hydrocarbons and the reservoir total compressibility even for such a heterogeneous case as in a water injection scenario. The analysis can be performed using a numerical simulator in the Fourier domain, by which heterogeneities can be explicitly taken into account. As time-stepping is not required in such a simulation, calculations are much faster than calculations in the time domain.
In the present paper we report on the application of the methodology to two field cases. The first case is a gas storage reservoir, operated with a day–night injection–shut in scenario. Data analysis proved that the reservoir was homogeneous and that a minor fault identified by the seismic was not hindering hydraulic communication between the pulser and the observer wells. The second case is a set of harmonic test experiments on three groundwater wells, the details of which have been published earlier together with a first attempt to interpret the data. The previous analysis was based on the hypothesis of homogeneous formation, but could not consistently explain all the measurements. With our novel methodology it was possible to investigate the effects of heterogeneity and we demonstrated that the presence of a fault zone with reduced permeability may explain the observations

Die vorliegende Studie analysiert, wie innerbetriebliche Referenzgruppen und der regulatorische Fokus von Kommunikationsbotschaften die Bereitschaft zur Teilnahme an betrieblichen Freiwilligenprogrammen beeinflussen. Die Ergebnisse einer experimentellen Studie zeigen, dass sich der Referenzgruppeneinfluss sowie der regulatorische Fokus von Kommunikationsbotschaften unterschiedlich auf verschiedene Facetten der individuellen Handlungsintention niederschlagen. Ferner wird auch gezeigt, dass die Referenzgruppeneinfluesse mit dem chronischen regulatorischen Fokus sowie mit dem regulatorischen Fokus von Kommunikationsbotschaften interagieren koennen. Handlungsempfehlungen fuer die Gestaltung der Kommunikation mit Mitarbeitern und Ansatzpunkte fuer die zukuenftige Forschung werden diskutiert. The results of an experimental study reveal that organizational reference group influences and the regulatory focus of communication messages have an impact on different aspects of the willingness of individuals to participate in employee volunteering programs. Moreover, the current study shows that the effects of organizational reference groups interact with two facets of the regulatory focus.
