    Human-Related Factors Regulate the Spatial Ecology of Domestic Cats in Sensitive Areas for Conservation

    Background: Domestic cats ranging freely in natural areas are a conservation concern due to competition, predation, disease transmission or hybridization with wildcats. In order to improve our ability to design effective control policies, we investigate the factors affecting their numbers and space use in natural areas of continental Europe. Methodology/Principal Findings: We describe the patterns of cat presence, abundance and space use and analyse the associated environmental and human constraints in a well-preserved Mediterranean natural area with small scattered local farms. We failed in detecting cats in areas away from human settlements (trapping effort above 4000 trap-nights), while we captured 30 individuals near inhabited farms. We identified 130 cats, all of them in farms still in use by people (30% of 128 farms). All cats were free-ranging and very wary of people. The main factor explaining the presence of cats was the presence of people, while the number of cats per farm was mostly affected by the occasional food provisioning with human refuse and the presence of people. The home ranges of eight radio tagged cats were centred at inhabited farms. Males went furthest away from the farms during the mating season (3.8 km on average, maximum 6.3 km), using inhabited farms as stepping-stones in their mating displacements (2.2 km of maximum inter-farm distance moved). In their daily movements, cats notably avoided entering in areas with high fox density. Conclusions: The presence, abundance and space use of cats were heavily dependent on human settlements. Any strategy aiming at reducing their impact in areas of conservation concern should aim at the presence of settlements and their spatial spread and avoid any access to human refuse. The movements of domestic cats would be limited in areas with large patches of natural vegetation providing good conditions for other carnivore mammals such as red foxes.Peer reviewe

    Microwave Synthesis of Silver Sulfide and Silver Nanoparticles: Light and Time Influence

    UIDB/50025/2020 UIDP/50025/2020 UID/CTM/50025/2019 .Silver sulfide (Ag2S) is a low band gap material, which absorbs near-infrared light and is of great importance in areas such as nanotechnology and biomedicine. We report the influence of the starting reagents, synthesis time, and light radiation on the geometry and size of silver sulfide nanoparticles and on the fraction of metallic Ag obtained in a microwave reactor. The X-ray diffraction diffractograms confirmed that Ag2S is the main product if the reaction's precursor contains silver in the oxidation state of +1 and mostly metallic silver (Ag°) when it is +2. Small nanoparticles (∼6 nm) of spherical geometry are present in the transmission electron microscopy images for the synthesis performed with the lamp light ON, while with the light switched OFF, wider and hundreds of nanometers longer particles are observed. This discriminative effect occurs with shorter synthesis time duration (<10 min) but when the time of reaction is extended, the particles coalesce for both light and dark conditions. Overall, it was observed by photoluminescence that crystalline Ag and Ag2S 4-8 nm nanoparticles obtained in 15 min and light irradiation during synthesis have a clear relative increase of the radiative recombination channels of the charged carriers, which are typical of materials characterized by the involvement of low density of states inside the band gap.publishersversionpublishe

    Cd and Cu interdiffusion in Cu(In,Ga)Se2/CdS hetero-interfaces

    We report a detailed characterization of an industry-like prepared Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS)/CdS heterojunction by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and photoluminescence (PL). Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) shows the presence of several regions in the CIGS layer that are Cu deprived and Cd enriched, suggesting the segregation of Cd-Se. Concurrently, the CdS layer shows Cd-deprived regions with the presence of Cu, suggesting a segregation of Cu-S. The two types of segregations are always found together, which, to the best of our knowledge, is observed for the first time. The results indicate that there is a diffusion process that replaces Cu with Cd in the CIGS layer and Cd with Cu in the CdS layer. Using a combinatorial approach we identified that this effect is independent of focused-ion beam sample preparation and of the TEM-grid. Furthermore, photoluminescence measurements before and after an HCl etch indicate a lower degree of defects in the post-etch sample, compatible with the segregates removal. We hypothesize that Cu2-xSe nanodomains react during the chemical bath process to form these segregates since the chemical reaction that dominates this process is thermodynamically favourable.     Secondary crystalline phases identification in Cu2ZnSnSe4 thin films: contributions from Raman scattering and photoluminescence

    In this work, we present the Raman peak positions of the quaternary pure selenide compound Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) and related secondary phases that were grown and studied under the same conditions. A vast discussion about the position of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) reflections of these compounds is presented. It is known that by using XRD only, CZTSe can be identified but nothing can be said about the presence of some sec- ondary phases. Thin films of CZTSe, Cu2SnSe3, ZnSe, SnSe, SnSe2, MoSe2 and a-Se were grown, which allowed their investigation by Raman spectroscopy (RS). Here we present all the Raman spectra of these phases and discuss the similarities with the spectra of CZTSe. The effective analysis depth for the common back-scattering geometry commonly used in RS measurements, as well as the laser penetration depth for photoluminescence (PL) were esti- mated for different wavelength values. The observed asymmetric PL band on a CZTSe film is compatible with the presence of CZTSe single-phase and is discussed in the scope of the fluctuating potentials’ model. The estimated bandgap energy is close to the values obtained from absorption measurements.     Putative oncogenic viruses : some data on Brazilian subjects

    The concepts of cancer etiology have changed over the years, mainly based on molecular epidemiology studies and bioinformatics approaches. Until relatively recently, the most accepted theory of cancer etiology has dealt with the accumulation of gene mutations and the consequent cognate proteins dysfunction, but now some authors have argued against the proposed theory. The additional role of noncellular genes in the cause of malignancy, associated to environmental factors and host genetic background, has been proposed and mostly accepted by the scientific community. Some of our data from human populations in Brazil concerning cancer epidemiology, molecular and serological surveys, were conducted looking for the detection of putative oncogenic viruses, as the Human T-cell Lymphotropic virus/HTLV-1/2, Human Papillomavirus/HPV, the Mouse or Human Mammary Tumor Virus/MMTV, the Human Endogenous Retrovirus/HERVs and the Hepatitis C virus/HCV, in healthy and malignized human tissues. Generally, research work around the world suggests that 10 to 20 % of all human cancers are etiologically linked to oncogenic viruses, so if the presence of exogenous or endogenous virus sequences in the human DNA has any significancy in the cancer etiology, it deserves further and continuous research work and discussion, always taking in account the human populations in their interacting surrounding environment

    MAMMALS IN PORTUGAL : A data set of terrestrial, volant, and marine mammal occurrences in P ortugal

    Mammals are threatened worldwide, with 26% of all species being includedin the IUCN threatened categories. This overall pattern is primarily associatedwith habitat loss or degradation, and human persecution for terrestrial mam-mals, and pollution, open net fishing, climate change, and prey depletion formarine mammals. Mammals play a key role in maintaining ecosystems func-tionality and resilience, and therefore information on their distribution is cru-cial to delineate and support conservation actions. MAMMALS INPORTUGAL is a publicly available data set compiling unpublishedgeoreferenced occurrence records of 92 terrestrial, volant, and marine mam-mals in mainland Portugal and archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira thatincludes 105,026 data entries between 1873 and 2021 (72% of the data occur-ring in 2000 and 2021). The methods used to collect the data were: live obser-vations/captures (43%), sign surveys (35%), camera trapping (16%),bioacoustics surveys (4%) and radiotracking, and inquiries that represent lessthan 1% of the records. The data set includes 13 types of records: (1) burrowsjsoil moundsjtunnel, (2) capture, (3) colony, (4) dead animaljhairjskullsjjaws, (5) genetic confirmation, (6) inquiries, (7) observation of live animal (8),observation in shelters, (9) photo trappingjvideo, (10) predators dietjpelletsjpine cones/nuts, (11) scatjtrackjditch, (12) telemetry and (13) vocalizationjecholocation. The spatial uncertainty of most records ranges between 0 and100 m (76%). Rodentia (n=31,573) has the highest number of records followedby Chiroptera (n=18,857), Carnivora (n=18,594), Lagomorpha (n=17,496),Cetartiodactyla (n=11,568) and Eulipotyphla (n=7008). The data setincludes records of species classified by the IUCN as threatened(e.g.,Oryctolagus cuniculus[n=12,159],Monachus monachus[n=1,512],andLynx pardinus[n=197]). We believe that this data set may stimulate thepublication of other European countries data sets that would certainly contrib-ute to ecology and conservation-related research, and therefore assisting onthe development of more accurate and tailored conservation managementstrategies for each species.     Pervasive gaps in Amazonian ecological research

    Biodiversity loss is one of the main challenges of our time,1,2 and attempts to address it require a clear un derstanding of how ecological communities respond to environmental change across time and space.3,4 While the increasing availability of global databases on ecological communities has advanced our knowledge of biodiversity sensitivity to environmental changes,5–7 vast areas of the tropics remain understudied.8–11 In the American tropics, Amazonia stands out as the world’s most diverse rainforest and the primary source of Neotropical biodiversity,12 but it remains among the least known forests in America and is often underrepre sented in biodiversity databases.13–15 To worsen this situation, human-induced modifications16,17 may elim inate pieces of the Amazon’s biodiversity puzzle before we can use them to understand how ecological com munities are responding. To increase generalization and applicability of biodiversity knowledge,18,19 it is thus crucial to reduce biases in ecological research, particularly in regions projected to face the most pronounced environmental changes. We integrate ecological community metadata of 7,694 sampling sites for multiple or ganism groups in a machine learning model framework to map the research probability across the Brazilian Amazonia, while identifying the region’s vulnerability to environmental change. 15%–18% of the most ne glected areas in ecological research are expected to experience severe climate or land use changes by 2050.
