Study of the Förster resonance energy transfer in ensembles of colloidal PbS quantum dots, emitting in the near-infrared spectral range
Dissertação de mestrado em PhysicsFörster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is a non-radiative energy transfer mechanism
between two light-emitting systems, such as two quantum dots (QDots) or
molecules. This mechanism involves an excited donor fluorophore (e.g., a QDot or a
dye molecule) which transfers its energy of excitation to an acceptor (another QDot or
molecule which is in resonance with the donor), via dipole-dipole coupling. FRET
is the dominant type of energy transfer between emitters at a nanometre proximity.
Other factors that influence the efficiency of this energy transfer mechanism include
the spectral overlap of the donor emission spectrum and the acceptor absorption
spectrum and the relative orientation of the dipole moment of both particles. In
nature, for instance, FRET plays a dominant role in the energy transfer in photosynthetic
apparatus of plants and bacteria. Some interesting applications of FRET can be
found in photovoltaics, probing of molecular distances and molecular interactions,
and storage and transfer of quantum information.
The main goal of this master thesis lies in detecting the presence of the FRET
mechanism when two different colloidal QDot samples of PbS (short for Lead Sulfide),
with different QDot size, are linked together via surface chemistry. This chemical
procedure activates carboxyl or phosphate groups, which promote the binding of
primary amines of organic glutathione QDot shell molecules. In other words, it
promotes a cross-linkage between the organic shells of two, or more, quantum dots
at a distance at which FRET is present. Using PbS quantum dots, which emit in the
near-infrared (NIR) region of the light spectrum, these experiments can be reported
as one of the first attempts to find The FRET mechanism in a near-infrared system
of QDots. Most previous reports of FRET mechanisms were concerned with QDots
which emit in the visible range, such as CdTe and CdSe QDots. The NIR spectral
range, for instance, promotes interesting applications in photonic crystals, where
FRET can be enhanced by spontaneous emission inhibition, in photovoltaics, in order
to greatly absorb infrared light, and in the production of near-infrared QDot lasers.
In order to find evidences of the presence of the FRET mechanism, emission spectra
and time-resolved measurements, using the time correlated single photon counting
technique (TCSPC), of cross-linked colloidal PbS QDot solutions have been performed and will be shown in this master thesis.
Along with the experimental results, a study of statistical moments of the PbS
quantum dot photoluminescence kinetics will be presented in this thesis, which experimental
kinetics were acquired with TCSPC. With this statistical analysis, it is
possible to evaluate and compare various decay properties, such as the average decay
time, the mean-squared value of the decay and the measure of asymmetry of the
time-resolved distribution. In order to understand the obtained results, some donor
decay models were developed and studied, alongside with other decay functions
found in the literature. A theoretical description of the FRET mechanism will be
presented in order to understand the proposed decay models.
A deteção
Correlated Single Photon Counting).
A partir desta análise estatística,
How profitability and debt influence dividends’ payout policy in the U.K., France and Portugal
JEL Classifications: G32 – Financing Policy; Financial Risk and Risk Management;
Capital and Ownership Structure;
G35 - Payout Policy; The goal of this thesis is to investigate how profitability and debt influence the
dividends’ payout policy of companies of three European countries: Portugal, France
and the U.K. Using work of La Porta et al. (2000) as a starting point, this thesis not only
validates the “outcome model“ described by La Porta et al. (2000) but also finds two
factors that affect dividends’ payout level: debt and activity type.
By comparing companies’ dividend payout policy in the three countries, this
thesis confirms that the U.K., a common law country, has the highest dividends level
and that dividend payout policy is a consequence of effective investor protection by law,
as claimed by La Porta et al. (2000). This thesis also subscribes the latter’s idea that in
common law countries, fast growth firms pay lower dividends than slow growth firms,
meaning that protected shareholders are willing to wait for their dividends when
investment opportunities are good. Poorly protected investors seem to take whatever
dividends they can get, regardless of investment opportunities.
Testing the factors that might affect dividend payout level indicates that there is
a positive relation between debt level and dividend policy, and that companies’ activity
type influence dividends. The former, however, raises some controversy as it contradicts some of the findings of previous studies.O objectivo desta dissertação é investigar como é que a rentabilidade e o
europeus: Portugal, França e o Reino Unido.
A primeira, contudo, gera alguma controvérsia pois contradiz alguns resultados
encontrados em estudos anteriores
Inhibiting and stimulating factors for the integration of refugees into the Portuguese labour market - Portuguese community analsyis and importance of outgroup support
Employment is considered a fundamental pillar of the overall refugee integration. This research has identified different factors that can stimulate or inhibit refugees’ integration in the labour market and society. Further more, the following study focuses on the analysis of the quality of outgroup support refugees can expect, during their integration process in Portugal. Using an online survey, information was gathered on different areas, such as the attitude towards refugees, the perception of their impact on the labour market and contact established with refugees. Results obtained showed a general positive attitude both towards the arrival of refugees in the country, as well as their integration in the labour market. While most participants had note stablished previous contact with refugees, media coverage in Portugal seems to have an indirect impact on the public’s image on refugees
Years of life lost associated with COVID-19 deaths in Portugal: two years of pandemic
Abstract publicado em. Eur J Public Health. 2023 Oct; 33(Suppl 2):ckad160.701. https://doi.org/10.1093/eurpub/ckad160.701Background: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Portuguese population is still underexplored. Therefore, the characteriza tion of years of life lost (YLL) due to this epidemic may provide relevant data for establishing effective strategies in future epidemics. The aim of this study was to calculate YLL associated with COVID-19 deaths in Portugal between 2020 and 2022. Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional study. Data on the average resident population and life expectancy at birth by age group and sex were obtained from Statistics Portugal (INE) and GBD 2019 standard life-table, respectively. Data on COVID-19 deaths were extracted from the Directorate-General of Health’s (DGS) reports. YLL was calculated as the number of COVID-19 deaths multiplied by standard life expectancy at the age of death, globally, by sex and age group. YLL was calculated by 100,000 population and age-standardized. Results: Between 2020 and 2022, 3413013 cases of COVID-19 were reported in Portugal, of which 21342 (0.6%) eventually died of the disease. The number of deaths by sex was similar globally or by age group. Globally, the YLLs estimated for COVID-19 in Portugal were 309383,8. YLLs were higher for males than for females for most age groups except of age groups 10-19 yrs (76.56 vs 153.11) and > 80 yrs (58710.88 vs 68491.44). YLLs age-standardized also showed a steady increase as we progressed in the age group [from 3.25 (0-9 yrs) to 885.54 (>80 yrs)], in which from the 50-59 yrs age group onwards we observed a steeper slope of increase in YLLs. Conclusions: COVID-19 has had a major impact on mortality rates in Portugal, with this impact being greater in the older population, especially in people aged over 70 years. Also, males presented higher YLLs than females, with this difference increasing substantially as age increases. These insights can be useful in terms of public health as the disease progresses to an endemic phase.Key messages: - COVID-19 has had a major impact on mortality rates in Portugal; - Calculating YLLs associated with COVID-19 in Portugal provides relevant data for establishing effective strategies in future epidemics.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The current technological developments, the competitiveness between organizations and the excessive price of products are factors that make organizations rethink their physical assets, gaining consciousness that these (installations and equipment), which are the result of big investments, should be better monetized, which means that the costs throughout their life cycles (acquisition, operation, maintenance and slaughter) should be minimized, in a sustainable way, causing minimal loss in the quality of the product or the service, as well as in the security of people and assets.
The reliability of the asset is a striking factor in the product’s quality. A system or an equipment is considered to be reliable when it is capable of executing its function with the previously defined level of quality. The reliability analysis can be made by the manufacturer’s testing (normal or accelerated) or through field data, being in both cases usually referred to time until failure. However, in an industrial environment, when it comes to critical equipment, the point is to avoid the occurrence of malfunction.
As a response to this scenario, comes the degradation analysis, as an alternative technique to the classic methods of reliability study, having the advantage that there is no failure necessary in order to obtain information about the asset’s reliability, having yet another benefit, which is the reduction of the test’s duration.
This study starts out by addressing the fundamentals of the maintenance and reliability theory, its application in the assets’ life cycle, making a reference to the statistical distributions of reliability that adapt the most to the multiple life phases of an asset, in particular the distribution of Weibull, the Normal distribution and the Exponential distribution.
This is followed by a proposal of methodology in order to accompany and analyze the mechanical degradation of the physical assets, analyzing the parameters of the assets in order to evaluate its reliability and making the maintenance interventions only when they’re on their lifespan limit, which will correspond to the time to failure.
Finally, there’s the introduction of a study case where, through data retrieved from the dynamic assets of a company that produces fertilizers, we have the estimation of the reliability and the identification of in what life period the assets will need an intervention, because their parameters will have reached the limit values which were previously defined.N/
Orientation method for people with cognitive disabilities
o estado do utilizador.
características e especificidades do utilizador.
erros do utilizador).People with disabilities (physical or cognitive) represent a small percentage of a country population.
However, the health costs are usually higher when compared to an ordinary person. Thus,
one should seek solutions to help the day life of such group of people. When diagnosed with
cognitive disabilities the patient may be prevented to live alone and a caregiver may be needed.
To avoid this privacy invasion and enable the patient to live independently in his home, there is the
need to adapt it to the concept of smart house, which enables the caregiver to remotely access
and check the user status. However, the smart house is not able to monitor the user when he
goes outside its premises. Thus, in order to keep the user safe, he may become a prisoner of his
own home.
To engage people with cognitive disabilities in a normal interaction with the surrounding environment
there is the need of a portable orientation system that works outdoors and is adapted
to this audience. If one look over the two main operative systems for mobile devices (i.e., iOS
and Android) there is a huge number of applications that guides the user through GPS to the
intended destination. However, there are just a few adapted to people with disabilities. Besides
the orientation feature there is also another important one from the perspective of the caregivers,
i.e., a localization feature which allows these second type of users to remotely access the main
user location. This is specially important since traditional methods are very expensive, and due
to this lack of information caregivers tend to be all the time with the patient during his journey.
Thus, the effort and resources spent to teach the user are wasted.
Different authors had developed adapted orientation systems considering the user specificities and characteristics. Their main concern was the user interface, since they considered that
available systems were too complex to be used by these group of people.
The system that was developed (i.e., CogHelper) has an adapted interface, which uses augmented
reality to provide the orientation to the user. It has also a real-time localization feature
where caregivers may know the user location. Our focus was not on the user interface, since it
was already studied, but on how to provide the necessary information to the user. Thus, the path
followed by the user is adapted to his preferences. In order to avoid mistakes during the traveling
path, the system may calculate possible locations in which the user takes the wrong turn and
alert him to keep on the correct path. These features are based on a pattern mining module (to
provide the preferred path) and on a speculative computation approach (to anticipate possible
user mistakes). The work of João Ramos is supported by a doctoral grant by FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a

independência do doente.
The technology has shown significant progress over the years. This progress was not exclusive to
computers, expanding to other areas such as Health. The use of technology in this field enabled
the development of new diagnostic technics or the enhancement of existing ones. Thus the life
quality and healthcare provided by institutions to the people were also improved. However, all the
progress has not suppressed diseases. There are a few that do not have an effective cure such
as cognitive disabilities.
When a patient is diagnosed with cognitive disabilities his life quality may suffer some changes.
One of the major alterations is the presence of a caregiver. Thus, the patient incurs in a decrease
of its independence. In order to reduce this privacy invasion, researchers have developed several
projects to enable the orientation of these people, but some of these projects may require some
mental effort that sometimes could become very complex.
The developed project intends to guide people with cognitive disabilities in a simplistic way,
allowing them to become more independent. Moreover, the caregiver may develop another type
of activity without neglecting the type of service provided due to the applications that let him/her
know the current position of the person with cognitive disabilities.
With this project it is intended to provide a greater independence to the person with cognitive
disabilities in common paths and leisure travels. This improvement in the independence of the
person is achieved through an application for mobile devices that allows the selection of several
points of interest and further orientation. This project uses concepts of augmented reality and the
GPS signal to get the user current location. Through simple symbols the path is indicated.
In another application for mobile devices the route can be viewed in real time enabling a
constant monitoring of the person with cognitive disabilities. This application also provides the
caregiver the visualization of the last points frequented by the person with cognitive disabilities
