    Can vocational education improve schooling and labour outcomes? Evidence from a large expansion

    We evaluate the education and labour impact of vocational education and training (VET). Identification draws on a reform to reduce early school leaving, which involved a large-scale, staggered introduction of VET courses. Drawing on comprehensive student-school matched panel data, we find that VET increased upper secondary graduation rates considerably: our LATE estimates are as large as 50 percentage points. These effects are even stronger for low-achieving students and welfare recipients; and also hold when exploiting the large gender differences of VET, with many courses selected almost only by either boys or girls. Based on this very preliminary work, the small crabs (Xantho spp.), bivalves (Limaria hians), and ormers (Haliotis tuberculata), seems to be the most important food items in the octopus feeding regime. Drill holes made by the octopus were observed on crab carapaces and chelipeds, but were not found on molluscan shells. The drill holes on the chelipeds or crabs are reported for the first time

    Statistical motion learning for improved transform domain Wyner-Ziv video coding

    Wyner - Ziv (WZ) video coding is a particular case of distributed video coding (DVC), the recent video coding paradigm based on the Slepian - Wolf and Wyner - Ziv theorems which exploits the source temporal correlation at the decoder and not at the encoder as in predictive video coding. Although some progress has been made in the last years, WZ video coding is still far from the compression performance of predictive video coding, especially for high and complex motion contents. The WZ video codec adopted in this study is based on a transform domain WZ video coding architecture with feedback channel-driven rate control, whose modules have been improved with some recent coding tools. This study proposes a novel motion learning approach to successively improve the rate-distortion (RD) performance of the WZ video codec as the decoding proceeds, making use of the already decoded transform bands to improve the decoding process for the remaining transform bands. The results obtained reveal gains up to 2.3 dB in the RD curves against the performance for the same codec without the proposed motion learning approach for high motion sequences and long group of pictures (GOP) sizes

    Abuse and maltreatment in the elderly

    Introduction: The aging population is increasing worldwide, but the abuse and mistreatment in the elderly (often silenced forms) has also been increasing, with strong implications for their quality of life. Objective: To identify forms of abuse and ill-treatment in the elderly, as well as the determinants of these abuses. Methodology: This is a quantitative study, of the non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional type attended by 135 Portuguese elderly. It uses the Family APGAR Scale and the Question to Elicit Elder Abuse (QEEA), which was applied between January and June 2013, in the elderly residing in the central of Portugal. Results: The data shows that 23.5% of the elderly have suffered some kind of abuse, these being especially of the emotional kind and neglect. We also found that the most abused elders were unmarried and widows, those who had lower academic qualifications, those who reported feeling lonely and less healthy and even those who perceive to integrate families with some degree of dysfunction. Conclusion: We found that the abuse and mistreatment are present in the everyday life of many seniors and are a difficult subject to approach. The evidence, invite us to reflect on the development of intervention strategies, particularly at the levels of emotional abuse, neglect, promotion of health and family functioning in order to contribute to the reduction or extinction of abuse and ill-treatment in the elderly.Resumo Introdução: O envelhecimento da população tem vindo a aumentar a nível mundial, contudo também têm aumentado os abusos e maus-tratos nos idosos, (muitas vezes em formas silenciadas), com fortes implicações na sua qualidade de vida. Objetivo: Identificar formas de abusos e maus-tratos em idosos, assim como os fatores determinantes desses abusos. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo, do tipo não experimental, descritivo e transversal, no qual participaram 135 idosos portugueses. Foi utilizada uma escala de APGAR-Familiar e o Question to Elicit Elder Abuse (QEEA) que foi aplicada entre Janeiro e Junho de 2013, em idosos que residem na região centro do país e na comunidade. Resultados: Os dados mostram que 23,5% dos idosos já sofreu algum tipo de maus tratos, sendo estes sobretudo do tipo emocional e negligencia. Verificámos ainda que os idosos mais abusados eram os solteiros e viúvos, os que possuíam menores habilitações académicas, aqueles que referiam sentir solidão e menor saúde e ainda os que percepcionam integrar famílias com alguma disfunção. Conclusão: Verificámos que os abusos e maus tratos estão presentes no quotidiano de muitos idosos e constituem tema de difícil abordagem. As evidências encontradas, convidam-nos à reflexão sobre o desenvolvimento de estratégias de intervenção, sobretudo aos níveis dos abusos emocionais, negligência, promoção da saúde e funcionalidade familiar no sentido de contribuir para a diminuição ou extinção dos abusos e maus-tratos em idosos

    The importance of providing quality water for cleaning milking machines and other equipment is perhaps one of the most overlooked factors in ensuring milk quality on most dairy farms. Water for cleaning in the dairy barn is used for different situations, including for the process of milking, which requires cleaning and disinfection of the milking equipment, the milking parlour, and the milk cooling tank.     Statistical Analysis of the Droplet Size Distribution of Tire Pyrolysis Oil-Diesel Oil Sprays

    The liquid product obtained from tire pyrolysis process, called tire pyrolysis oil (TPO), has a great attraction as an alternative fuel, as it has a viscosity of 5.43 cSt (Sharma et al., 2016), density of 921 kg/m³ (Gamboa et al., 2020), surface tension of 0.028 N/m (Chumpitaz et al., 2019), and higher heating value of 46.32 MJ/kg (Das et al., 2017), which are similar to diesel oil. These physical and chemical properties have motivated research into its application in furnaces, boilers and compression ignition engines. Generally, TPO is blended with diesel or biodiesel in order to decrease the percentage of sulfur and improve the cetane number of the fuel blend (Sharma et al., 2016). However, the evaluation of the quality and applicability of TPO has been focused mainly on combustion emissions and the performance of thermal equipment fueled with this fuel (and diesel/biodiesel blends), where the atomization process has been ignored, which is closely linked with the efficiency of liquid fuel evaporation and combustion. Thus, in this work, an evaluation of the atomization quality of blends of tire pyrolysis oil and diesel oil was carried out based on the comparison of the uniformity parameters of the drop size distribution of fuel sprays. The distribution function used was the Log-Normal function, as it allowed reconstructing the droplet size distribution of the sprays with only the mass median diameter and Sauter mean diameter. These values were measured using the Malvern Spraytec laser diffraction system model STP5936 (Chumpitaz et al., 2019). The fuel sprays were generated with a twin-fluid atomizer (type Y-jet) operating at air-to-fuel mass ratio (RAL) in the range of 0.05 to 0.35. The results showed that the higher the percentage by mass of TPO in the fuel blend, the lower the uniformity of the spray. Furthermore, a uniform TPO-DO spray with smaller mean diameters (0.15) are applied and percentages of TPO in the blend less than 5% are used

    The immediate effects of Therasuit® on the gait pattern of a child with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy

    Aims: This study analyzes the immediate effects of using TheraSuit® (TS) on the gait of a child with left spastic hemiplegia level II (GMFCS). Methods: Spatiotemporal gait parameters and kinematic variables in the sagittal plane were compared between baseline and TS conditions. Results: Positive effects were noted on temporal parameters in the TS condition, such as a reduced gait cadence. The analysis of angular displacements in joint angles showed that at initial contact there was a reduction in the: (i) Plantarflexion on the paretic side; (ii) Dorsiflexion on the non-paretic side; and (iii) Knee flexion angles in both limbs. Furthermore, an increase in hip and knee extension angles during stance, and a decrease in knee and hip flexion on the non-paretic limb during swing were also detected. Conclusions: Further investigations with larger samples are necessary to confirm these effects of wearing TS on gait kinematics, aiming toward providing a more functional and safer gait pattern in children with spastic hemiplegia.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Unlocking the in vitroanti- inflammatory and antidiabetic potential of Polygonum maritimum

    Context: Several Polygonum species (Polygonaceae) are used in traditional medicine in Asia, Europe and Africa to treat inflammation and diabetes. Objective: Evaluate the in vitro antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antidiabetic potential of methanol and dichloromethane extracts of leaves and roots of the halophyte Polygonum maritimum L. Material and methods: Antioxidant activity was determined (up to 1mg/mL) as radical-scavenging activity (RSA) of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), copper (CCA) and iron (ICA) chelating activities and iron reducing power (FRAP). NO production was measured in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages for 24 h at concentrations up to 100 mu g/mL and antidiabetic potential was assessed by alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase inhibition (up to 10 g/mL) assays. The phytochemical composition of the extracts was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: The methanol leaf extract had the highest activity against DPPH center dot (IC50 = 26 mu g/mL) and ABTS1(+)center dot (IC50 = 140 mu g FRAP (IC50 = 48 mu g/mL) and CCA (IC50 = 770 mu g/mL). Only the dichloromethane leaf extract (LDCM) showed anti-inflammatory activity (IC50 = 48 mu g/mL). The methanol root (IC50 = 19 mu g/mL) and leaf (IC50 = 29 mu g/mL) extracts strongly inhibited baker's yeast alpha-glucosidase, but LDCM had higher rat's alpha-glucosidase inhibition (IC50 = 2527 mu g/mL) than acarbose (IC50 = 4638 mu g/mL). GC-MS analysis identified beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, 1-octacosanol and linolenic acid as possible molecules responsible for the observed bioactivities.
