The future of Brick and Mortar and the myth of e-commerce
Electronic market is one of this decade’s fast growing markets, achieving the milestone of triliões pela primeira vez na história.
mentalidade e hábitos do consumidor.
Extracting Ontologies From Neural Networks
Artificial neural network-based methods have been growing in popularity, being success-
fully applied to perform a variety of tasks. As these systems begin to be deployed in
domains where it is desired that they have a certain degree of autonomy and respon-
sibility, the need to comprehend the reasoning behind their answers is becoming a re-
quirement. Though, neural networks are still regarded as black boxes, since their internal
representation do not provide any human-understandable explanation for their outputs.
A considerable amount of work has been done towards the development of methods to
increase the interpretability of neural networks. However, these methods often produce
interpretations are too complex and do not have any declarative meaning, leaving the
user with the burden of rationalizing them. Recent work has shown that it is possible
to establish mappings between a neural network’s internal representations and a set of
human-understandable concepts. In this dissertation we propose a method that leverage
these mappings to induce an ontology that describes a neural network’s classification
Todavia, estes métodos tendem a produzir inter-
Smooth representations of Groups associated with Algebras defined over non-archimedean fields
In this thesis, we study smooth representations of algebra groups, involutive algebra groups and unit groups of split basic algebras. We prove that every smooth irreducible representation of such a group is induced by a smooth representation of dimension one, which correspond to a continuous character of a subgroup of the same type. We also prove results about admissibility and unitarisability. This work generalises work of C. André and Z. Halasi who proved similar results in the case of finite fields, and is based on a method introduced by M. Boyarchenko for the case of algebra groups over local non-Archimedean fields
"Managing the impact of tourism in historic urban destinations. A sustainability approach: case study of Sintra"
In this Work Project, it will be assessed how Sintra’s sustainability is affected by the consequences of the visitor flow on its urban historical center. Two research questions will support this case study: What is the main problem affecting Sintra as a tourism destination? How sustainable will Sintra be in the next 10-15 years? The main findings suggest Sintra faces an intense seasonal pressure on its historical city center and its sustainability might be seriously affected in the near future, whereby three domains of the destination deserve a serious strategy reassessment: promotion, management, and supply
Worldwide convergence of IFRS: Evidence from the global automotive industry
Worldwide convergence of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), ongoing since 2002, is a requirement if international comparability between publicly listed companies is to be ensured. Convergence is examined from the point of view of regulators, accountants, and users of financial information. For this purpose, data on 534 companies from the global automotive industry is used. This paper concludes that worldwide convergence is mostly being effective. Its triumph, however, varies depending on the set of accounting standards being compared to IFRS. Options within IFRS, national tax regulation, cultural differences, different company strategies and country resistance are found to hinder convergence
Dynamic properties of clay brick at different strain rates
Investigation of the dynamic properties of construction materials is critical for structural
engineering. The strain rate effect influences the properties on most constructions materials. This
effect on materials such as concrete or steel has been intensively investigated. However, such
studies on masonry materials such as clay bricks cannot be found in the open literature easily.
Understanding the strain rate effect on masonry materials is important for proper modelling and
design of masonry structures under high velocity impacts or blast loads. This work aims to study
the behaviour of clay brick in compression at different strain rates. A Drop Weight Impact
Machine will be used on clay brick specimens at different heights and weights introducing
different levels of strain rate, ranging from 4 s-1 to 199 s-1. The strain rate effect on the ultimate
strength, young’s modulus and strain at ultimate strength will be determined from the
experimental results. Empirical relations of dynamic increase factors (DIF) for these material
properties will be presented
Salt Fluxes in a Complex River Mouth System of Portugal
Measurements of velocity and salinity near the mouth and head of the Espinheiro channel (Ria de Aveiro lagoon, Portugal) are used to study the local variation of physical water properties and to assess the balance, under steady conditions, between the seaward salt transport induced by river discharge and the landward dispersion induced by various mixing mechanisms. This assessment is made using data sampled during complete tidal cycles. Under the assumption that the estuarine tidal channel is laterally homogeneous and during moderate tidal periods (except for one survey), currents and salinity data were decomposed into various spatial and temporal means and their deviations. Near the channel's mouth, the main contributions to the salt transport are the terms due to freshwater discharge and the tidal correlation. Near the channel's head, this last term is less important than the density driven circulation, which is enhanced by the increase in freshwater discharge. The remaining terms, which are dependent on the deviations from the mean depth have a smaller role in the results of salt transport. The computed salt transport per unit width of a section perpendicular to the mean flow is in close agreement to the sum of the advective and dispersive terms (within or very close to 12%). An imbalance of the salt budget across the sections is observed for all the surveys. Considerations are made on how this approach can inform the management of hazardous contamination and how to use these results to best time the release of environmental flows during dry months
This study was performed to achieve results on the impact of a strength program on young athletes in basketball. The presented study aimed to evaluate how a 8 week strength training program can influence the physical and technical-tactical capabilities of young basketball players. Exactly 22 athletes of two different teams, belonging to the same district association, all female, were identified. Of the selected 22 players, 10 belonged to the u16 and the remaining 12 were u14. They were separated in two groups, the Control Group (CG; n=10) and the Experimental Group (EG; n=12). Participants of the CG averaged 14.4 ± 0.7 years old, weighted 57.7 ± 5.9 kilograms, had a height of 1.61 ± 0.05 meters and had 3.9 ± 2.9 years of practise. On the other hand, participants on the EG averaged 13.3 ± 0.7 years old, weighted 53.3 ± 5.9 kilograms, had a height of 1.62 ± 0.07 meters and had 3.8 ± 1.5 years of practise. Only the EG was submitted to the strength training program, which was performed for 30 minutes, twice a week for 8 weeks. Both groups were evaluated in the beginning (pre-practice) and the end (post-practice) regarding agility (t-test), speed (sprint ¾), cardiorespiratory aptitude (pacer test) lower body (standing long jump) and upper body (medicinal ball throw) limbs strength. A technical circuit was performed to evaluate basketball technical skills (Jr. Skills Test), through time versus made shots/total points. The results showed a moderated difference between the groups relatively at T-Test (F (1, 19) = 2.83, p = 0.11, ?p2 = 0.13), sprint (F (1, 19) = 4.01, p= 0.06, ?p2 = 0.17) e vaivém (F (1, 19) = 2.63, p = 0.12, ?p2 = 0.12). Although defferent statistics are not reported between groups in medicine ball throw, standing long jump test and Jr. skills test, the values tended to demonstrate benefits with the implemention of the strength training program. The results evidenced that athletes on the experimental group show bigger benefits in some tests in comparison to the control group. Therefore, we can say that the implementation of a strength training program can have positive impacts on both on strength levels and technical-tactical aspects in female young basketball players
Adhesive joints are in constant development and expansion, so they are being increasingly used in various industries. Because of this evolution, they are now replacing traditional joining methods. This development owes much to the evolution that damage models have been suffering over the years. Cohesive zone models (CZM) are a damage mechanics technique and are applied as a supplement to the analyses by the Finite Element Method (FEM), and have shown good results in joints’ behavior predictions.
In this work, a numerical study by finite element method was carried out to make a comparison between the DCB and TDCB tests to estimate the value of GIC. A treatment of experimental data existing for the two types of test and selected three adhesives was undertaken. The main objective of this work is the numerical modeling of the tests in order to reproduce the experimental results and evaluate the suitability of each method in determining GIC. This comparison was made by comparing the experimental and numerical P-δ curves. After obtaining the P-δ curves, a sensitivity analysis was performed to investigate the influence of the parameters tn 0 and GIC on the behavior of the numerical DCB and TDCB models. With the results obtained by the numerical study, it was possible verify that the obtained P-δ curves satisfactorily reproduce the experimental curves. With the sensitivity study, it was observed that the parameter GIC is the one that most influences the P-δ curve, while the parameter tn 0 only affects the stiffness before the peak
This dissertation aims the implementation of a remote monitoring system based on optical sensors, namely fibre Bragg grating based sensors.
A remote monitoring system, based on an optical accelerometer, was developed and implemented, at the Aveiro University water reservoir, with a sensibility of 87,848 pm/G and 92,351 pm/G for the transversal and longitudinal directions, respectively.
The structure to monitor is physically and mathematically described, through numeric models, with the purpose of estimate its natural frequency on the longitudinal and transversal directions. It is implemented and described a remote monitoring system consisting of an optical fibre connection of the structure to the central system, installed at the Instituto de Telecomunicações – Pólo de Aveiro, which can be accessed from any place with an internet connection.
A liquid level sensor for future implementation on the same structure was developed. It is also described and characterized, thermal and mechanically, three versions of the liquid level sensor, which has been optimized during this work. The last version has a sensibility of 72,4±0,100 pm/m, between 0 e 1 m, and a resolution of 6,9 cm using an interrogator with a 5 pm resolution.
At last, the structure natural frequencies were monitored over a time period. It is verified that there are no significant changes on the value of the natural frequencies, concluding that the structure is at a healthy state, maintaining its physical properties, namely its rigidity.
This work demonstrated the successful use of optical sensors interconnected with optical fibre communication networks for remote monitoring applications
