Constraints of HACCP Application on Edible Insect for Food and Feed

    Get PDF
In a near future there is a need to guaranty food security for approximately more than one billion people worldwide. Beyond the population increase other factors contribute to food and feed insecurity such as climate changes, rising costs of animal protein and consumer demands for protein. Edible insects are pointed out as one alternative as they have always been a part of human diets. The concern to guaranty food security cannot be dissociated from food safety and under the Codex Alimentarius principles of food hygiene, insects would be comparable to other types of foods of animal origin. The processing and storage of insects and their products should follow the same health and sanitation regulations as for any other food or feed in order to ensure their microbiological and chemical safety. Allergies induced through insects’ ingestion should also be considered. This review aims to identify potential hazards related to edible insects’ production and transformation. Preventive measures to their control will be presented considering pre-requirements in their production and transformation. An HACCP plan will be described as a study case in insects’ transformation, being discussed all constraints regarding implementation

The visual need is characterized by the limitation of visual capacity, resulting of organics and/or functional alterations. The realization of regular consultation is considered more efficient way for the precocious detention of any alteration that attacks the visual health, being an indispensable tool in the prevention of visual need. This research has had as the main objective to detect precociously the suspicious cases of visual need in the community of Muatala. A descriptive quantitative, transversal and prospective observational study was made in 102 residents of the community of Muatala, Nampula – Mozambique, in the period between September to October of 2018. The data were collected through questionnaire and clinic evaluation, through the clinic examination of the visual acuity. In this study, the descriptive statistic was applied for the data analysis. From the 102 examined residents of the community, 39% presented need in the visual acuity at a great distance. In the evaluation of the risk factors which contributes to the emerge of visual need cases, was discovered that the community presents diagnosed systematic diseases, which contributes to the development of lesions at ocular level, being the more frequent the arterial hypertension (21%) followed by the mellitus diabetes (6%). Related to the visual health consultations, was noticed that 91% of the participants did not know their visual health status, what makes them vulnerable, considering that exist asymptomatic diseases in its initial stage which may cause irreversible blindness. Thus, can be affirmed that the community of Muatala has suspicious cases of visual need, which needs monitoring and precocious intervention. Keywords: Irreversible blindness. Visual need.
Abstract

Background

Onabotulinumtoxin A (OnabotA) injection has been investigated as a novel treatment for benign prostatic enlargement caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. An OnabotA - induced volume reduction caused by sympathetic fibers impairment has been proposed as a potential mechanism of action. Our aim was to investigate the expression of apoptosis-regulating proteins in the rat prostate following OnabotA intraprostatic injection.

Methods

Adult Wistar rats were injected in the ventral lobes of the prostate with 10 U of OnabotA or saline. A set of OnabotA-injected animals was further treated with 0.5 mg/kg of phenylephrine (PHE) subcutaneously daily. All animals were sacrificed after 1 week and had their prostates harvested. Immunohistochemical staining was performed for Bax, Bcl-xL and caspase-3 proteins and visualized by the avidin-biotin method. The optical density of the glandular cells was also determined, with measurement of differences between average optical densities for each group.

Results

Saline-treated animals showed intense epithelial staining for Bcl-xL and a faint labelling for both Bax and Caspase-3. OnabotA-treated rats showed a reduced epithelial staining of Bcl-xL and a consistently increased Bax and Caspase-3 staining when compared with saline-treated animals. PHE-treated animals showed a stronger Bcl-xL staining and reduced staining of both Bax and Caspase-3 when compared to the OnabotA group. Mean signal intensity measurements for each immunoreaction confirmed a significant decrease of the signal intensity for Bcl-xL and a significant increase of the signal intensity for Bax and Caspase 3 in OnabotA-injected animals when compared with the control group. In OnabotA+PHE treated animals mean signal intensity for Bcl-xL, Bax and Caspase 3 immunoreactions was identical to that of the control animals.

Conclusions

These results support the hypothesis that OnabotA activates apoptotic pathways in the rat prostate through a mechanism that involves sympathetic outflow impairment.</p

The refrigerant blend R-507A (50 wt % HFC-143a, 50 wt % HFC-125) is an azeotropic mixture of hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants, 1,1,1-trifluoroethane (HFC-143a) and pentafluoroethane (HFC-125). The paper reports viscosity measurements, performed with a vibrating-wire viscometer, of the refrigerant blend R-507A,at five temperatures in the range (253 to 293) K. The measurements were carried out at pressures from slightly above saturation up to 10 MPa, except for the isotherms at 253.26 K where the maximum pressure was 7.52 MPa and at 263.23 K where the maximum pressure was 7.09 MPa. The overall uncertainty of these measurements is estimated to be ( 1.0 %. The data obtained were correlated by means of a modified hard-sphere based correlation technique. The root-mean-square deviation, rmsd, of the experimental results from the correlation equations is 0.23 %, and their bias is not significant. This correlation method has also been used to interpolate and extrapolate the present results to enable comparisons with measurements performed by other authors of the viscosity of liquid R-507A at different temperatures and pressures

1ª edição do CQE Days, organizada pelo Centro de Química Estrutural, realizada na Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, de 30-31 de maio de 2019 - https://cqe.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/cqedaysIonic liquids have attracted considerable interest in recent years, as they can be used for multiple aims, namely, as antistatic agents, electrolytes, solvents, lubricants, and CO2 absorbents [1]. The use of ionic liquids in industrial processes require their thermophysical properties, in particular, the viscosity and the thermal conductivity. However, transport properties are scarce due to the difficulty of the measurements, particularly at pressures higher than the atmospheric pressure. Our group has developed a programme of measurements aiming at obtaining rigorous results for the viscosity of ionic liquids using the vibrating wire method. This technique, although very accurate for molecular, non-conducting liquids, could have some difficulties with ionic liquids due to their electrical conductivity [2]. As we were planning to use the vibrating wire method in the forced mode of oscillation, the method requires the acquisition of the frequency response of the wire in a range of frequencies containing the velocity resonance for the transverse oscillations of the wire. Therefore, it is important to verify if the ionic liquid sample is a good electrolytic conductor in the range of frequencies that matter for the measurement of viscosity. The problematic of measuring the viscosity of ionic liquids both in general and in particular, using the vibrating wire technique was studied [3]. Pardal et al. [4] have used 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (EMIMOTf) mixed with water as the electrolyte to successfully reduce CO2 at high pressure. The objective of this work is to contribute with viscosity data in the pressure and temperature range of the work performed by those authors. Therefore, we present new ionic viscosity results for temperatures between 298 K and 347 K and pressures up to 50 MPa.N/
