Critical review of literature on the use of short implants

    Get PDF
Aim The aims of this review were to verify the validity of short implants as a treatment option in patients with partial or total edentulism, having more or less atrophic jawbones. Methods A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCT) was conducted, involving also prospective and retrospective studies published in English language between January 2005 and December 2015. The PubMed and Scopus databases were electronically analyzed. Titles and abstracts were selected, and full texts were evaluated. The data were organized in tables and then presented as a narrative analysis. Results The electronic search provided 891 publications, 50 articles were retrieved in full text and only 11 were included in the review. Although the performance of the implants was evaluated through different success and survival criteria, short implants have shown to have a similar performance to longer implants. Conclusions Short implants could be considered as a treatment option comparable to traditional lenght implant. However, other studies must be conducted to assess uniform criteria to state the quality of treatment

Effects of random RF disturbances on aeronautical communication systems

Air Traffic Control (ATC) and their responsible authorities have been always very sensitive to safety of the systems they are using to guarantee a fool-proof and environmentally safe operation of the facilities to provide air traffic services and guidance for the airplanes. This paper deals with the influence of random systems like badly shielded ignition systems of cars and motorbikes on standard air-ground aviation communication systems. Following a series of theoretical simulations, a measurement campaign quantifying this influence is described. This campaign is shedding some light on the fundamental behaviour and mechanisms of the RF disturbances caused by (shielded and unshielded) spark plug systems. It will be investigated both in the time domain and in the frequency domain. An analysis of the inaccuracies of those measurements is performed and the influence of (shielded and unshielded) spark plug systems on aviation communication systems (still based on A(mplitude)M(odulation)) is explained in detail

Repentir: Digital exploration beneath the surface of an oil painting

    Get PDF
Repentir is a mobile application that employs marker-less tracking and augmented reality to enable gallery visitors to explore the under drawing and successive stages of pigment beneath an oil painting's surface. Repentir recognises the position and orientation of a specific painting within a photograph and precisely overlays images that were captured during that painting's creation. The viewer may then browse through the work's multiple states and closely examine its painted surface in one of two ways: sliding or rubbing. Our current prototype recognises realist painter Nathan Walsh's most recent work, "Transamerica". Repentir enables the viewer to explore intermediary stages in the painting's development and see what is usually lost within the materially additive painting process. The prototype offers an innovative approach to digital reproduction and provides users with unique insights into the painter's working method

Comparison of accuracy of single crowns generated from digital and conventional impressions: An in vivo controlled trial

Aim With the advances of digital technology, intraoral digital impression (DI) technique has become a major trend in prosthodontics with respect to traditional impression (TI) techniques; despite that, very few data are available concerning its accuracy. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of DI versus TI considering both marginal and internal gap (MG, IG, respectively) in cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) single crowns manufactured by mean of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. Material and methods Thirty posterior teeth were considered for this study. For each abutment tooth, sixty and thirty copings were produced with the aid of TI and DI, respectively. Thirty of the sixty copings of the TI-group were then randomly selected to be veneered and cemented onto existing abutments. The space existing between the internal surface of the coping and the abutment tooth was evaluated onto an in vitro replica; the MG and IG were measured by Scanning Electron Microscope. The data were analysed by the Wilcoxon test (1-tailed). Results The mean MG was 75.04 μm (SD = 13.12) and 55.01 μm (SD = 7.01) for the TI group and DI group, respectively. As regards the mean IGs, the values recorded were of 78.36 μm (SD = 19.66) for the TI-group and 59.20 μm (SD=3.33) for the DI-group. A statistically significant difference was found between the two groups (p-value = 0.001). Conclusions Copings manufactured from DI showed better MGs and IGs with respect to copings produced from TI. However, both approaches produced clinically acceptable results

The effect of a seed predator, Apion rostrum (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), on selective pod abortion from Baptisia leucantha (Fabaceae) was investigated in a restored tallgrass prairie plot. Weevil densities in and undamaged seed contents of attached and detached pods were compared over four occasions during the summer of 1993. Detached pods had similar to lower counts of weevils/pod and fewer seeds/pod than attached pods. Weevil density in pods appears only important in promoting pod abortIon through affects on seed number/pod as pods having fewer seeds are selectively aborted
