Certain perceptual and personality correlates of deviant and conforming attitudes

    Get PDF
In this investigation deviation and conformity in a women's college with approximately 700 students has been studied. The criterion used was variation in attitude towards equality between the sexes (feminism), the subjects' perception of the group norm, of themselves in relation to this norm, and some of their consciously expressed personality predispositions were made the focus of the inquiry. Responses were obtained from 312 subjects in an attitude questionnaire, in which they were asked to indicate their attitude and that of the majority of students in the college.Forty-six subjects were given, in addition, certain personality tests from which a composite measure, labelled Self Determination, was obtained. The results indicated that there exist significant differences between people in different categories of deviation and conformity as to their perception of the group's norm. It is found that deviants are not most inaccurate. There exist also significant differences among the categories in the degree to which the subjects consider themselves like the group, and this does not seem to be related to actual degree of deviation, nor to self determination. Finally, it was found that deviants in this group tend to score higher in Self Determination than conformists, regardless of the direction of their deviation. Some of the implications of these findings are discussed and possible lines of further research are outlined.<p

Effect of row orientation on soil water content and vine water status on a Cabernet franc vineyard in Madrid, spain

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of row orien¬tation on vine and soil water status in an irrigated vineyard. The trial was developed during 2006, 2007 and 2008, in the South East region of Madrid (Spain) on 5-year old Cabernet franc grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.) grafted onto 140Ru. Plant spacing was 2.5 m x 1.5 m and vines were trained to a VSP. Four orientations were stu¬died: North-South (N-S), East-West (E-W), Northeast-Southwest (N+45) and North-South +20o (N+20). Irrigation (0.4•ET0) started when shoot growth stopped. Soil water availability was measured using a TDR technique with forty buried probes. Row orientation did not have any effect on water consumption in the vineyard. At maturity, leaf water potential was measured at predawn, early mor¬ning, midday and 14:00 solar time, on both canopy sides - sun and shade – ; the early morning measurement was the one that better differentiated treatments. Leaf water potential was a good indica¬tor of plant water status. Differences between (N-S and E-W) and (N+20 and N+45) treatments were obtained both on sun and shade canopy sides, N+20 and N+45 having lower leaf water potentials then drier leaves. The water stress integral shows that N-S and E-W reach the end of maturation with a greater level of hydration than N+45 and N+20. As a whole, N+45 and N+20 orientations, without affecting too much the soil available water content, induce regularly more water stress to the vine at some periods, probably due to an higher sunlight interception in early morning which makes water limitation for the vine more early and thus more severe during the day

Magnetic force induced vibration on a ferromagnetic sphere for viscoelastic media characterization

[EN] A new method that combines transient magnetic forces with ultrasonic imaging and allows the local experimental characterization of the complex shear modulus of a viscoelastic medium is presented. By measuring the dynamics of a ferromagnetic inclusion under the application of a magnetic force, the viscoelastic properties of the medium are extracted. The system is composed of a coil, which creates a magnetic field that induces displacement on a ferromagnetic particle located inside a test phantom, and an ultrasound transducer operating in pulsed-echo mode, utilized to track the displacement of the particle with spatial resolution of several um. Experiments were conducted embedding a ferromagnetic sphere on test phantoms with different compositions and at different temperatures. The obtained results are in good agreement with the theoretical estimation of the dynamical response of a sphere and show robustness on the estimation of the viscoelastic parameters. Moreover, temperature dependent results show asymptotic elasticity values which are physically consistent for soft-solid media. This work is funded by the Spanish Ministerio de Economía e lnnovación (MlNECO) Generalitat Valenciana (GVA) through the projects TEC2016-80976-R and AlCO2016-108. Microglia, the resident immune cells of the brain, have multiple functions in physiological and pathological conditions, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). The use of primary microglial cell cultures has proved to be a valuable tool to study microglial biology under various conditions. However, more advanced transfection methodologies for primary cultured microglia are still needed, as current methodologies provide low transfection efficiency and induce cell death and/or inflammatory activation of the microglia. Here, we describe an easy, and effective method based on the Glial-Mag method (OZ Biosciences) using magnetic nanoparticles and a magnet to successfully transfect primary microglia cells with different small interfering RNAs (siRNAs). This method does not require specialist facilities or specific training and does not induce cell toxicity or inflammatory activation. We demonstrate that this protocol successfully decreases the expression of two key genes associated with AD, the triggering receptor expressed in myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) and CD33, in primary microglia cell cultures

Sensitivity of polyamine metabolism to glucose deprivation is increased in neuroblastoma cells with N-myc amplification

Ornithine-derived polyamines are essential for cell proliferation, and their levels are elevated in many human tumors. Neuroblastoma, the most frequent extra-cranial solid tumor in children, harbors amplification of n-myc oncogene (which enhances polyamine metabolism) in 25% of the cases. In the present communication, the relevance of n-myc amplification in several metabolic features of human neuroblastoma cell lines is studied. A previously unknown linkage between glycolysis impairment and polyamine reduction, related to n-myc amplification, is unveiled. Results show that glycolysis inhibition is able to trigger signaling events leading to the reduction of N-Myc protein levels and subsequent decrease of both ornithine decarboxylase expression and polyamine levels, accompanied by cell cycle blockade preceding cell death. Metabolism-targeted therapies are emerging as new approaches for cancer treatment. New anti-tumor strategies could take advantage of the direct relationship between glucose deprivation and PA metabolism impairment leading to cell death described in the present work, and its apparent dependence on n-myc amplification in the case of neuroblastoma. Combined therapies targeting glucose metabolism and polyamine synthesis could be effective in the treatment of n-myc amplified tumors.Universidad de Málaga. The Skeletal Atlas: A holistic approach to transcriptomics in the skeleton.

Gene expression atlases are powerful bioinformatics tools that allow access to the scientific community to explore omics data. In biomedicine, numerous gene expression databases are available, yet none provide enough information about localized transcriptomics in the skeletal system. In this work we try to solve this gap of knowledge by creating a transcriptomic atlas which brings together different works across the skeletal system, analyzing several key tissue compartments in normal and pathological conditions from mouse and human after analyzing more than 200 studies. Our atlas shows a user-friendly representation which allows the comparison of multiple genes across the different tissues of the skeleton: bone, cartilage, tendon, ligament, growth plate and skeletal muscle. As expected, our first finding was the identification of a significant heterogeneity between experiments from similar studies but from different labs, so we have created a dataset processing pipeline with inclusive/exclusive criteria of RNAseq experiments based in sequencing quality and purity of the analyzed tissues in search of a normalization protocol. We believe that this atlas will allow the homogenization of the public transcriptomic studies in the skeleton and will settle the basis to incorporate the upcoming data from single cell transcriptomics studies.Universidad de Málaga. Analysis Of Hotel Internet Booking Users

    Get PDF
The number of tourist products sold on the Internet has increased remarkably in recent years. The hotel industry has figured prominently in this boom due to hotel bookings made via the Internet becoming increasingly popular. The reason for this upturn in online bookings is, in many cases, the possibility of booking at any time and the possible existence of lower prices. In order to achieve these lower prices, consumers must accept certain restrictions or conditions that hotels use to manage demand through yield management strategies. This paper analyses hotel Internet booking users in order to ascertain their socio-demographic characteristics and behaviour in regard to online purchase decisions. The ultimate goal is therefore to determine a user profile. With this information, hotel managers will be able to manage Internet hotel bookings

Hospital volume and outcomes for acute pulmonary embolism: Multinational population based cohort study

    Get PDF
[Objectives] To evaluate the association between experience in the management of acute pulmonary embolism, reflected by hospital case volume, and mortality.[Design] Multinational population based cohort study using data from the Registro Informatizado de la Enfermedad TromboEmbólica (RIETE) registry between 1 January 2001 and 31 August 2018.[Setting] 353 hospitals in 16 countries.[Participants] 39 257 consecutive patients with confirmed diagnosis of acute symptomatic pulmonary embolism.[Main] outcome measure Pulmonary embolism related mortality within 30 days after diagnosis of the condition.[Results] Patients with acute symptomatic pulmonary embolism admitted to high volume hospitals (>40 pulmonary embolisms per year) had a higher burden of comorbidities. A significant inverse association was seen between annual hospital volume and pulmonary embolism related mortality. Admission to hospitals in the highest quarter (that is, >40 pulmonary embolisms per year) was associated with a 44% reduction in the adjusted odds of pulmonary embolism related mortality at 30 days compared with admission to hospitals in the lowest quarter (<15 pulmonary embolisms per year; adjusted risk 1.3% v 2.3%; adjusted odds ratio 0.56 (95% confidence interval 0.33 to 0.95); P=0.03). Results were consistent in all sensitivity analyses. All cause mortality at 30 days was not significantly reduced between the two quarters (adjusted odds ratio 0.78 (0.50 to 1.22); P=0.28). Survivors showed little change in the odds of recurrent venous thromboembolism (odds ratio 0.76 (0.49 to 1.19)) or major bleeding (1.07 (0.77 to 1.47)) between the low and high volume hospitals.[Conclusions] In patients with acute symptomatic pulmonary embolism, admission to high volume hospitals was associated with significant reductions in adjusted pulmonary embolism related mortality at 30 days. These findings could have implications for management strategies.Peer reviewe
