Investigating the accuracy achievable in reconstructing the angular sizes of stars through stellar intensity interferometry observations
Context: In recent years, stellar intensity interferometry has seen renewed
interest from the astronomical community because it can be efficiently applied
to Cherenkov telescope arrays. Aims: We have investigated the accuracy that can
be achieved in reconstructing stellar sizes by fitting the visibility curve
measured on the ground. The large number of expected available astronomical
targets, the limited number of nights in a year, and the likely presence of
multiple baselines will require careful planning of the observational strategy
to maximise the scientific output. Methods: We studied the trend of the error
on the estimated angular size, considering the uniform disk model, by varying
several parameters related to the observations, such as the total number of
measurements, the integration time, the signal-to-noise ratio, and different
positions along the baseline. Results: We found that measuring the value of the
zero-baseline correlation is essential to obtain the best possible results.
Systems that can measure this value directly or for which it is known in
advance will have better sensitivity. We also found that to minimise the
integration time, it is sufficient to obtain a second measurement at a baseline
half-way between 0 and that corresponding to the first zero of the visibility
function. This function does not have to be measured at multiple positions.
Finally, we obtained some analytical expressions that can be used under
specific conditions to determine the accuracy that can be achieved in
reconstructing the angular size of a star in advance. This is useful to
optimise the observation schedule.Comment: Accepted for publication by Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A
Open innovation in Starbucks Corporation
The shortening of the life cycle of the products and the consumer's active presence in
pre-commercialization phases has been a change in the corporate vision. Also, the
spread of ICT is the main evolutionary factor analysis of information. Making use of
these new technologies open innovation arises. This is a way of externalizing the
innovation process of a firm. This process is based on customer involvement in the
innovation process. Instead of being the company who make innovations and offers
customers, the open innovation process means that consumers take an active role in the
development of innovations with the company.
The aim of this paper is to analyze what it is and how open innovation processes are
held. As a case study we have analyzed the website used by a company in the hostelry
sector, Starbucks Corporation, which is using an open innovation community. The
paper describes the main features of this portal, the possibilities of user participation
and collective assessment processes to discriminate the best innovations

Serum biomarkers for the differentiation of autoimmune pancreatitis from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma
Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP), a chronic inflammation caused by the immune
system attacking the pancreas, usually presents imaging and clinical features that
overlap with those of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Serum biomarkers,
substances that quantitatively change in sera during disease
development, are a promising non-invasive tool with high utility for differentiating
between these diseases. In this way, the presence of AIP is currently
suspected when serum concentrations of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4) antibody are
elevated. However, this approach has some drawbacks. Notably, IgG4 antibody
concentrations are also elevated in sera from some patients with PDAC. This
review focuses on the most recent and relevant serum biomarkers proposed to
differentiate between AIP and PDAC, evaluating the usefulness of immunoglobulins,
autoantibodies, chemokines, and cytokines. The proposed serum
biomarkers have proven useful, although most studies had a small sample size,
did not examine their presence in patients with PDAC, or did not test them in
humans. In addition, current evidence suggests that a single serum biomarker is
unlikely to accurately differentiate these diseases and that a set of biomarkers will
be needed to achieve adequate specificity and sensitivity, either alone or i
Peripheral Inflammation Enhances Microglia Response and Nigral Dopaminergic Cell Death in an in vivo MPTP Model of Parkinson’s Disease
The impact of systemic inflammation in nigral dopaminergic cell loss remains unclear. Here, we have investigated the role of peripheral inflammation induced by systemic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration in the MPTP-based model of Parkinson’s disease. Brain inflammation, microglia and astroglia activation, disruption of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and integrity of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic system were evaluated in response to i.p. injection of LPS, MPTP or the combination of both. Our results showed that combinative treatment exacerbates microglia activation and enhances (i) the appearance of galectin-3-positive microglia, recently identified as microglial disease-associated phenotypic marker, (ii) the up-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines, (iii) the occurrence of A1 neurotoxic astrocytes, (iv) the breakdown of the BBB, and (v) the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Microglia activation was triggered earlier than other degenerative events, suggesting that over-activation of microglia (including different polarization states) may induce dopaminergic neuron loss by itself, initiating the endless cycle of inflammation/degeneration. Our study revitalizes the importance of peripheral inflammation as a potential risk factor for Parkinson’s disease and raises the possibility of using new anti-inflammatory therapies to improve the course of neurodegenerative diseases, including those directly aimed at modulating the deleterious activity of disease-associated microglia.España MINECO y FEDER SAF2015-64171-

Tissue-specific decellularized endometrial substratum mimicking different physiological conditions influences in vitro embryo development in a rabbit model
[EN] In the last decades, the decellularization (DC) of organs has become an established technique in the field of regenerative medicine to yield complex and vascularized bioscaffolds. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated in vitro that these decellularized scaffolds retain their native tissue-specificity. This is also the case when this tissue-specific extracellular matrix (ECM) is solubilized and used as hydrogels or coatings to create a biomimetic environment. In this study we investigated if this specificity not only remains when applied to distinct tissues but even more, that these differences can be distinguished within the same tissue at different stages of proliferation. To address this question, a sensitive in vitro animal model was used: rabbit embryos at the third day of development were cultured on coatings made from acellular endometrium that was non-proliferating (non-synchronous, NS) and proliferating (synchronous with the embryo, S) and their development was compared. For this, we obtained whole NS and S rabbit uteri and subjected them to an adapted decellularization protocol. The acellular endometrium was carefully separated by microdissection and converted into a pre-gel solution to be used as hydrogels and coatings for in vitro assays. First, the characteristics of these NS and S hydrogels were investigated by proteomic analysis, electron microscopy and gelling kinetics. When used as substrata for day 3 embryos culture, it became apparent that only the acellular ECM from synchronous endometrial coating achieved similar results to the gold standard culture protocols and conditions, possibly because of the slow release of growth factors present in the synchronous/proliferating endometrium.
Statement of Significance
It has been shown by in vitro culture of stem cells, progenitor cells and primary culture cells that decellularized tissues retain their specific functions and biochemical and structural compositions. The present work demonstrates that using a mild SDS and perfusion based decellularization (DC) protocol not only effectively decellularize whole rabbit uteri, adding to the growing field of reproductive tissue engineering, but more importantly that the differences in the proliferating endometrium are translated after DC. This implies that DC not only retains the interspecificity of tissues but also the intraspecificity of a developing hormonally stimulated tissue. For the first time, we demonstrate that the coating from decellularized synchronous endometrium acts as a biological support for in vitro embryo development, achieving comparable results with the current gold standard that only uses serum-containing media. Envasado sostenible
