Narratives of Loss: Exploring Grief through Photography
Grief is not an exclusively private and intrapsychic phenomenon but a dynamic process whereby the bereaved negotiates the meaning of the loss in a way that may challenge his/her personal self-narrative. Drawing on a social constructionist model of grief, this paper features a case study where we analyse narratives of mourning elicited through a personal photographic project. The visual-based narrative methodology used in our study (photo-production) not only allows for multi-modal forms of expression and communication in the study of grief, but it also serves as an aid for individuals to scaffold further meaning-making processes which cannot be conveyed through narrative alone. The paper concludes with an invitation to reflect on the use of photography as both a possible methodological tool to explore narratives of grief and a therapeutic tool for the construction of meanings and continuing bonds with the deceased
Effect of the mother tree age and acorn weight in the regenerative characteristics of Quercus faginea
[EN] The establishment of oak trees is often a slow and difficult process. Hence, it is necessary to determine the characteristics that can lead to improving their regeneration. In this genus, seed size is highly variable both at the interspecific and intraspecific
levels, and the effects of intrapopulation variability are not well understood, being even less so for Quercus faginea. In this
study, the effects of the age of the mother tree, seed weight and the interaction between these two factors on seed germination,
emergence and growth (biomass) were analysed. For this purpose, 16 treesâ8 young and 8 oldâwere selected with the intent
to cover the entire range of acorn weights produced in this population. Among the main results, it should be noted that: (1)
in older trees, it is easier to find larger acorns; (2) the percentage and the speed of germination of the acorns of young trees
is greater than that of old trees; (3) the percentage and the speed of seedling emergence of young trees is greater than that
of old trees; and (4) cotyledon weight is the variable that most influences biomass, quite often in a positive way. Therefore,
maintaining intrapopulation variability seems to be an approach that most favours the persistence of these populations

First glycine isomer detected in the interstellar medium: glycolamide (NHC(O)CHOH)
We report the first detection in the interstellar medium of a
CHON isomer: -glycolamide (NHC(O)CHOH). The exquisite
sensitivity at sub-mK levels of an ultra-deep spectral survey carried out with
the Yebes 40m and IRAM 30m telescopes towards the G+0.693-0.027 molecular cloud
have allowed us to unambiguously identify multiple transitions of this species.
We derived a column density of (7.4 0.7)10 cm,
which implies a molecular abundance with respect to H of
5.510. The other CHON isomers, including the
higher-energy conformer of glycolamide, and two conformers of glycine,
were not detected. The upper limit derived for the abundance of glycine
indicates that this amino acid is surely less abundant than its isomer
glycolamide in the ISM. The abundances of the CHON isomers cannot
be explained in terms of thermodynamic equilibrium, and thus chemical kinetics
need to be invoked. While the low abundance of glycine might not be surprising,
based on the relative low abundances of acids in the ISM compared to other
compounds (e.g. alcohols, aldehydes or amines), several chemical pathways can
favour the formation of its isomer glycolamide. It can be formed through
radical-radical reactions on the surface of dust grains. The abundances of
these radicals can be significantly boosted in an environment affected by a
strong ultraviolet field induced by cosmic rays, such as that expected in
G+0.693-0.027. Therefore, as shown by several recent molecular detections
towards this molecular cloud, it stands out as the best target to discover new
species with carbon, oxygen and nitrogen with increasing chemical complexity.Comment: Accepted in The Astrophysical Journal Letter
