Precise measurements of radio-frequency magnetic susceptibility in (anti)ferromagnetic materials
Dynamic magnetic susceptibility, , was studied in several intermetallic
materials exhibiting ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and metamagnetic
transitions. Precise measurements by using a 14 MHz tunnel diode oscillator
(TDO) allow detailed insight into the field and temperature dependence of
. In particular, local moment ferromagnets show a sharp peak in
near the Curie temperature, . The peak amplitude decreases and shifts to
higher temperatures with very small applied dc fields. Anisotropic measurements
of CeVSb show that this peak is present provided the magnetic easy axis is
aligned with the excitation field. In a striking contrast, small moment,
itinerant ferromagnets (i.e., ZrZn) show a broad maximum in that
responds differently to applied field. We believe that TDO measurements provide
a very sensitive way to distinguish between local and itinerant moment magnetic
orders. Local moment antiferromagnets do not show a peak at the N\'eel
temperature, , but only a sharp decrease of below due to the
loss of spin-disorder scattering changing the penetration depth of the ac
excitation field. Furthermore, we show that the TDO is capable of detecting
changes in spin order as well as metamagnetic transitions. Finally, critical
scaling of in the vicinity of is discussed in CeVSb and

Soft x-ray spectroscopy experiments on the near K-edge of B in MB2 (M=Mg, Al, Ta, and Nb)
Soft X-ray absorption and emission measurements are performed for the K- edge
of B in MB (M=Mg, Al, Ta and Nb). Unique feature of MgB with a high
density of B 2-state below and above the Fermi edge, which
extends to 1 eV above the edge, is confirmed. In contrast, the B 2 density
of states in AlB and TaB, both of occupied and unoccupied states,
decreased linearly towards the Fermi energy and showed a dip at the Fermi
energy. Furthermore, there is a broadening of the peaks with
-character in XES and XAS of AlB, which is due to the increase of
three dimensionality in the -band in AlB. The DOS of NbB has a
dip just below the Fermi energy. The present results indicate that the large
DOS of B-2 states near the Fermi energy are crucial for the
superconductivity of MgB.Comment: 3 pages text and 4 pages figures. accepted for publication to Phys.

Density Matrix in Quantum Mechanics and Distinctness of Ensembles Having the Same Compressed Density Matrix
We clarify different definitions of the density matrix by proposing the use
of different names, the full density matrix for a single-closed quantum system,
the compressed density matrix for the averaged single molecule state from an
ensemble of molecules, and the reduced density matrix for a part of an
entangled quantum system, respectively. We show that ensembles with the same
compressed density matrix can be physically distinguished by observing
fluctuations of various observables. This is in contrast to a general belief
that ensembles with the same compressed density matrix are identical. Explicit
expression for the fluctuation of an observable in a specified ensemble is
given. We have discussed the nature of nuclear magnetic resonance quantum
computing. We show that the conclusion that there is no quantum entanglement in
the current nuclear magnetic resonance quantum computing experiment is based on
the unjustified belief that ensembles having the same compressed density matrix
are identical physically. Related issues in quantum communication are also
discussed.Comment: 26 pages. To appear in Foundations of Physics, 36 (8), 200
Transcriptome profiling on the response of Mycosphaerella graminicola isolates to an azole fungicide using cDNA arrays
Resistance to azole antifungals is a major problem in the control of diseases caused by fungal pathogens of both humans and plants. Potential for the development of azole resistance in the wheat leaf blotch pathogen Mycosphaerella graminicola, the causal agent of the most economically significant foliar disease of wheat in north-western Europe, is now of particular concern after the recent emergence of widespread resistance to quinone outside inhibitor fungicides. Using a cDNA microarray representing around 25% of the genome, we have profiled the transcriptional response of M. graminicola to epoxiconazole, currently the most widely used azole fungicide on cereal crops. By comparing the transcription profiles of two M. graminicola isolates with contrasting sensitivities to epoxiconazole we show qualitative and quantitative differences in differentially expressed genes, including those involved in ergosterol biosynthesis, mitochondrial respiration and transport mechanisms. This represents the first study investigating the response of a plant pathogenic fungus to a fungicide using cDNA microarray technology
Electronic structure of MgB: X-ray emission and absorption studies
Measurements of x-ray emission and absorption spectra of the constituents of
MgB are presented. The results obtained are in good agreement with
calculated x-ray spectra, with dipole matrix elements taken into account. The
comparison of x-ray emission spectra of graphite, AlB, and MgB in the
binding energy scale supports the idea of charge transfer from to
bands, which creates holes at the top of the bonding bands and
drives the high-TComment: final version as published in PR
C-axis lattice dynamics in Bi-based cuprate superconductors
We present results of a systematic study of the c axis lattice dynamics in
single layer Bi2Sr2CuO6 (Bi2201), bilayer Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) and trilayer
Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi2223) cuprate superconductors. Our study is based on both
experimental data obtained by spectral ellipsometry on single crystals and
theoretical calculations. The calculations are carried out within the framework
of a classical shell model, which includes long-range Coulomb interactions and
short-range interactions of the Buckingham form in a system of polarizable
ions. Using the same set of the shell model parameters for Bi2201, Bi2212 and
Bi2223, we calculate the frequencies of the Brillouin-zone center phonon modes
of A2u symmetry and suggest the phonon mode eigenvector patterns. We achieve
good agreement between the calculated A2u eigenfrequencies and the experimental
values of the c axis TO phonon frequencies which allows us to make a reliable
phonon mode assignment for all three Bi-based cuprate superconductors. We also
present the results of our shell model calculations for the Gamma-point A1g
symmetry modes in Bi2201, Bi2212 and Bi2223 and suggest an assignment that is
based on the published experimental Raman spectra. The
superconductivity-induced phonon anomalies recently observed in the c axis
infrared and resonant Raman scattering spectra in trilayer Bi2223 are
consistently explained with the suggested assignment.Comment: 29 pages, 13 figure
Influence of the starting composition on the structural and superconducting properties of MgB2 phase
We report the preparation of MgB (0x0.5) compounds
with the nominal compositions. Single phase MgB was obtained for x=0
sample. For 0x0.5, MgB coexists with "MgB" and the amount
of MgB increases with x. With the increase of x, the lattice parameter
of "MgB" increases and the lattice parameter
decreases, correspondingly T of MgB decreases. The results
were discussed in terms of the presence of Mg vacancies or B interstitials in
the MgB structure. This work is helpful to the understanding of the
MgB films with different T, as well as the Mg site doping effect
for MgB.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Small Open Chemical Systems Theory and Its Implications to Darwinian Evolutionary Dynamics, Complex Self-Organization and Beyond
The study of biological cells in terms of mesoscopic, nonequilibrium,
nonlinear, stochastic dynamics of open chemical systems provides a paradigm for
other complex, self-organizing systems with ultra-fast stochastic fluctuations,
short-time deterministic nonlinear dynamics, and long-time evolutionary
behavior with exponentially distributed rare events, discrete jumps among
punctuated equilibria, and catastrophe.Comment: 15 page

The energy spectrum of all-particle cosmic rays around the knee region observed with the Tibet-III air-shower array
We have already reported the first result on the all-particle spectrum around
the knee region based on data from 2000 November to 2001 October observed by
the Tibet-III air-shower array. In this paper, we present an updated result
using data set collected in the period from 2000 November through 2004 October
in a wide range over 3 decades between eV and eV, in which
the position of the knee is clearly seen at around 4 PeV. The spectral index is
-2.68 0.02(stat.) below 1PeV, while it is -3.12 0.01(stat.) above 4
PeV in the case of QGSJET+HD model, and various systematic errors are under
study now.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted by Advances in space researc
