Perchlorate is a persistent pollutant, generated via natural and anthropo genic processes, that possesses a high potential for endocrine disruption in humans and biota. It inhibits iodine fixation, a major reason for eliminating this pollutant from ecosystems. Remediation of perchlorate can be achieved with various physi cochemical treatments, especially at low concentrations. However, microbiological approaches using microorganisms, such as those from the genera Dechloromonas, Serratia, Propionivibrio, Wolinella, and Azospirillum, are promising when perchlo rate pollution is extensive. Imaging techniques of the posterior segment of the eye have gradually evolved and tremendously improved during the last decade. A widespread implementation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for the management and diagnosis of retinal conditions, with a concurrent advance in integrative technology, led to the integration of the OCT into the microscope for its intraoperative use. Regarding posterior segment eye surgery, some of the most common diagnoses in which microscope-integrated OCT (MIOCT) can result of great value are epiretinal membrane, macular hole (MH), proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and, less frequently, for inflammatory diseases, chorioretinal biopsies, and retinal implants. The impact on the surgical procedure and, possibly, on the postoperative outcome could relate to the definition of whether or not a membrane has been entirely peeled, the presence of residual membranes, and the option to perform a dissection without the need of vital dyes. The possibility of correct topographical location of hemorrhages, suspect lesions, or implants can also facilitate the surgical decision-making during biopsies or prosthesis implantation. Microscope-integrated OCT is a feasible and useful tool that can provide valuable information during surgery impact on decision-making, anatomic results, surgical safety and provide opportunity to individualize surgical treatment for each patient

Shear resistance of different web panels of linearly tapered bridge girders with steel corrugated webs

Although steel girders have been u sed for many years, new gener ation of optimized steel girders is developed by the advances in structural and fabricat ion technology. Girders with corrugated webs are used in bridge s as an efficient alternative to conventional girders with flat stiffened webs, It was also found that, the vertically corrugat ed girders had a 10.6% reduction in weight when compared with the beam with flat web.[1] Advantages Economical design of steel girders normally requires thin webs. The use of corrugated webs is a possible wa y of achieving adequate out-of- plane stiffness without using stiffeners. Particularly in bri dge girders with corrugated webs (BGCWs), the corrugated webs are the main elements for bearing the shear forces. Instead of prismatic BGCWs, tapered BGCWs are currently used mainly due to their structural efficie ncy, providing at the same time aesthetical appearance. Available literature shows that tapered BGCWs may be classified into four typologies. Among these typologies, Case I and Case II are the most common cases appearing commonly near to the intermediate supports of continuous bridges. Accordingly, in this thesis, the finite element (FE) method is employed to investigate the inelastic behaviour of tapered BGCWs of Case I and Case II, fol lowing to the fundamental behaviour of such girders published recently by Hassanein et al [6]. The thesis seeks, firstly, considering initial imperfection amp litudes of 200 / 1 w h . Accordingly, with euro code 3 part 1-5, annex D [12], 1 w h is the height of the long vertical edge of the web panel, it investigates the effect of the aspect ratio of the we b panels, different flange inclination angles and different web thickness. Finally, the thesis checks previously proposed design model usi ng the results of the generated parametric studies. Overall, the outcomes of this study are exp ected to provide more insight into the behaviour of tapered BGCWs and enable accurate predict ion of the shear capacity of this special type of BGCWs

[EN] Perchlorate (ClO4¿) has several industrial applications and is frequently detected in environmental matrices at relevant concentrations to human health. Currently, perchlorate-degrading bacteria are promising strategies for bioremediation in polluted sites. The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize halophilic bacteria with the potential for perchlorate reduction. Ten bacterial strains were isolated from soils of Galerazamba-Bolivar, Manaure-Guajira, and Salamanca Island-Magdalena, Colombia. Isolates grew at concentrations up to 30% sodium chloride. The isolates tolerated pH variations ranging from 6.5 to 12.0 and perchlorate concentrations up to 10000¿mg/L. Perchlorate was degraded by these bacteria on percentages between 25 and 10. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that the strains were phylogenetically related to Vibrio, Bacillus, Salinovibrio, Staphylococcus, and Nesiotobacter genera. In conclusion, halophilic-isolated bacteria from hypersaline soils of the Colombian Caribbean are promising resources for the bioremediation of perchlorate contamination. This research received support from the Vice Presidency of Research, University of Cartagena; and Colciencias-University of Cartagena (Grant: RC-758-2011/1107-521-29360).Acevedo-Barrios, R.; Bertel-Sevilla, A.; Alonso Molina, JL.; Olivero-Verbel, J. Skin color correction via convolutional neural networks in 3D fringe projection profilometry

    Get PDF
Fringe Projection Profilometry (FPP) with Digital Light Projector technology is one of the most reliable 3D sensing techniques for biomedical applications. However, besides the fringe pattern images, often a color texture image is needed for an accurate medical documentation. This image may be acquired either by projecting a white image or a black image and relying on ambient light. Color Constancy is essential for a faithful digital record, although the optical properties of biological tissue make color reproducibility challenging. Furthermore, color perception is highly dependent on the illuminant. Here, we describe a deep learning-based method for skin color correction in FPP. We trained a convolutional neural network using a skin tone color palette acquired under different illumination conditions to learn the mapping relationship between the input color image and its counterpart in the sRGB color space. Preliminary experimental results demonstrate the potential for this approach

This paper presents a method for detecting an author’s profile using the following two elements: gender and age. This is based on a set of dialogues, written in two languages: English and Spanish, provided for Author Profiling competence within the evaluation forum "Uncovering Plagiarism, Authorship, and Social Software Misuse" (PAN2018). Counts of lexical, semantic, and syntactic characteristics are used to generate a two-phase classification system, which first classifies gender and then age. The results obtained show that, with the amount of data available, it is possible to characterize both the age and gender of an author with an accuracy greater than 50%. However, these values could be improved by having more evidence of information in the training data
