An Overview of Supplier Rating, Certification and Selection Systems in the Defense Aircraft Industry

    Get PDF
In this paper, we report on the status of supplier rating, certification and selection systems in the US Defense Aircraft Industry. Our findings result from a range of information gathering activities over the past eighteen months including: Site visits to companies; a one day review session at Lockheed Fort Worth Company on February 7, 1994 in which 10 companies made presentations of their systems; the study of documents received from over a dozen companies pertaining to rating, certification and selection systems; and, responses to the Survey of Supplier Systems and Relationships. The purposes of this report are: • To identify and review current practices with respect to supplier rating, certification and selection systems based on our current state of knowledge; • To discuss the extent to which these systems support the process of supplier base optimization

Adorno's Praxis of individuation Through Music Listening

    Get PDF
Theodor W. Adorno's Anweisungen zum Hören neuer Musik (Guidelines for Listening to Modern Music) contain instructions not only for how to listen but also for how to have experience in general. The psycological, perceptual, and cognitive structures involved are existential structures, i.e. guidelines as to how to be as a modernist or post-modern self. Since listening involves abandoning oneself to the immanent logic of musical works, it is these works that provide the model for how to be. Adorno's work also shows, in contradistinction to some views of Adorno, his commitment to the unity of theory and practice and demonstrates that his musical writing is a completely independent and novel strand of critical theory because of is attempt to articulate the ineffable. However, Adorno's explicit theory of listening ("structural listening") is itself inadequate to Adorno's implicit theory of listening as contained in the practice of his actual musical writings

Unpacking the causal chain of financial literacy

    Get PDF
A growing body of literature examines the causal impact of financial literacy on individual, household, and firm level outcomes. This paper unpacks the mechanism of impact by focusing on the first link in the causal chain. Specifically, it studies the experimental impact of financial literacy on three distinct dimensions of financial knowledge. The analysis finds that financial literacy does not immediately enable individuals to discern costs and rewards that require high numeracy skills, but it does significantly improve basic awareness of financial choices and attitudes toward financial decisions. Monetary incentives do not induce better performance, suggesting cognitive constraints rather than lack of attention are a key barrier to improving financial knowledge. These results illuminate the strengths and limitations of financial literacy training, which can inform the design and anticipated effects of such programs.Financial Literacy,Education For All,Access&Equity in Basic Education,Access to Finance,Primary Education

Convergent Duality for the Traveling Salesman Problem

    Get PDF
A constructive method is presented for optimizing exactly the Traveling Salesman Problem as a sequence of shortest route problems. The method combines group theoretic and Lagrangean relaxation constructions. Key Words: Traveling Salesman Problem, Lagrangean relaxation, shortest route problem, generalized linear programming, group theory

Analyzing Multi-Objective Linear and Mixed Integer Programs by Lagrange Multipliers

    Get PDF
A new method for multi-objective optimization of linear and mixed programs based on Lagrange multiplier methods is developed. The method resembles, but is distinct from, objective function weighting and goal programming methods. A subgradient optimization algorithm for selecting the multipliers is presented and analyzed. The method is illustrated by its application to a model for determining the weekly re-distribution of railroad cars from excess supply areas to excess demand areas, and to a model for balancing cost minimization against order completion requirements for a dynamic lot size model
