    Discovery and Validation of a High-Density sub-Neptune from the K2 Mission

    We report the discovery of BD+20594b, a high density sub-Neptune exoplanet, made using photometry from Campaign 4 of the two-wheeled Kepler (K2) mission, ground-based radial velocity follow-up from HARPS and high resolution lucky and adaptive optics imaging obtained using AstraLux and MagAO, respectively. The host star is a bright (V=11.04V=11.04, Ks=9.37K_s = 9.37), slightly metal poor ([Fe/H]=−0.15±0.05=-0.15\pm 0.05 dex) solar analogue located at 152.1−7.4+9.7152.1^{+9.7}_{-7.4} pc from Earth, for which we find a radius of R∗=0.928−0.040+0.055R⊙R_*=0.928^{+0.055}_{-0.040}R_\odot and a mass of M∗=0.961−0.029+0.032M⊙M_* = 0.961^{+0.032}_{-0.029}M_\odot. A joint analysis of the K2 photometry and HARPS radial velocities reveal that the planet is in a ≈42\approx 42 day orbit around its host star, has a radius of 2.23−0.11+0.14R⊕2.23^{+0.14}_{-0.11}R_\oplus, and a mass of 16.3−6.1+6.0M⊕16.3^{+6.0}_{-6.1}M_\oplus. Although the data at hand puts the planet in the region of the mass-radius diagram where we could expect planets with a pure rock (i.e. magnesium silicate) composition using two-layer models (i.e., between rock/iron and rock/ice compositions), we discuss more realistic three-layer composition models which can explain the high density of the discovered exoplanet. The fact that the planet lies in the boundary between "possibly rocky" and "non-rocky" exoplanets, makes it an interesting planet for future RV follow-up.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures.     ColdZymeÂź Mouth Spray reduces duration of upper respiratory tract infection symptoms in endurance athletes under free living conditions

    Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) can compromise athlete preparation and performance, so countermeasures are desirable. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of ColdZymeÂź Mouth Spray (ColdZyme) on self-reported upper respiratory tract infection in competitive endurance athletes under free-living conditions. One hundred and twenty-three endurance-trained, competitive athletes (recruited across 4 sites in England, UK) were randomised to control (no treatment, n = 61) or ColdZyme (n = 62) for a 3-month study period (between December 2017 – February 2018; or December 2018 – April 2019). They recorded daily training and illness symptoms (Jackson common cold questionnaire) during the study period. A total of 130 illness episodes were reported during the study with no difference in incidence between groups (episodes per person: 1.1 ± 0.9 Control, 1.0 ± 0.8 ColdZyme, P = 0.290). Episode duration was significantly shorter in ColdZyme compared to Control: Control 10.4 ± 8.5 days vs ColdZyme 7.7 ± 4.0 days, P = 0.016). Further analysis to compare episodes with poor vs good compliance with ColdZyme instructions for use (IFU) within the ColdZyme group showed a further reduction in duration of URTI when compliance was good (9.3 ± 4.5 days in ColdZyme poor IFU compliance vs 6.9 ± 3.5 days in ColdZyme good IFU compliance, P = 0.040). ColdZyme may be an effective countermeasure to reduce URTI duration, which was significantly lower (by 26-34%) in the ColdZyme treatment group (with no influence on incidence). This may have implications for athlete performance

    The Planetary Nebula System of M33

    We report the results of a photometric and spectroscopic survey for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Local Group spiral galaxy M33. We use our sample of 152 PNe to derive an [O III] planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) distance of (m-M)_0 = 24.86^+0.07-0.11 (0.94^+0.03-0.05 Mpc). Although this value is ~ 15% larger than the galaxy's Cepheid distance, the discrepancy likely arises from differing assumptions about the system's internal extinction. Our photometry (which extends >3 mag down the PNLF), also reveals that the faint-end of M33's PN luminosity function is non-monotonic, with an inflection point ~2 mag below the PNLF cutoff. We argue that this feature is due to the galaxy's large population of high core-mass planetaries, and that its amplitude may eventually be useful as a diagnostic for studies of stellar populations. Fiber-coupled spectroscopy of 140 of the PN candidates confirms that M33's PN population rotates along with the old disk, with a small asymmetric drift of \~ 10km/s. Remarkably, the population's line-of-sight velocity dispersion varies little over ~4 optical disk scale lengths, with sigma_{rad}~20km/s. We show that this is due to a combination of factors, including a decline in the radial component of the velocity ellipsoid at small galactocentric radii, and a gradient in the ratio of the vertical to radial velocity dispersion. We use our data to show that the mass scale length of M33's disk is ~2.3 times larger than that of the system's IR luminosity and that the disk's V-band mass-to-light ratio changes from M/L_V ~0.3 in the galaxy's inner regions to M/L_V ~2.0 at ~9 kpc. Models in which the dark matter is distributed in the plane of the galaxy are excluded by our data.     Tracking of unpredictable moving stimuli by pigeons

    Despite being observed throughout the animal kingdom, catching a moving object is a complex task and little is known about the mechanisms that underlie this behavior in non-human animals. Three experiments examined the role of prediction in capture of a moving object by pigeons. In Experiment 1, a stimulus moved in a linear trajectory, but sometimes made an unexpected 90o turn. The sudden turn had only a modest effect on capture and error location, and the analyses suggested that the birds had adjusted their tracking to the novel motion. In Experiment 2, the role of visual input during a turn was tested by inserting disappearances (either 1.5 cm or 4.5 cm) on both the straight and turn trials. The addition of the disappearance had little effect on capture success, but delayed capture location with the larger disappearance leading to greater delay. Error analyses indicated that the birds adapted to the post-turn, post-disappearance motion. Experiment 3 tested the role of visual input when the motion disappeared behind an occluder and emerged in either a straight line or at a 90o angle. The occluder produced a disruption in capture success but did not delay capture. Error analyses indicated that the birds did not adjust their tracking to the new motion on turn trials following occlusion. The combined results indicate that pigeons can anticipate the future position of a stimulus, and can adapt to sudden, unpredictable changes in motion but do so better after a disappearance than after an occlusion

    Investigating the Impact of Anti-Corruption Strategies on International Business: An Interim Report

    The detrimental impact of corruption on society and economic well-being in both developed and developing countries is well established. International business provides ample opportunity for engaging in a variety of corrupt activities, from bribing of public officials and others in positions of power for obtaining contracts, licences and tax concessions to price fixing and bid rigging. Increased awareness of the negative impact of corruption has over recent years led to the introduction of a broad spectrum of measures designed to combat corruption including in the private sector. These measures involve a range of stakeholders and regulatory approaches (both legal and non-legal). The essential questions now concern the extent to which these are achieving their objectives in terms of tackling corruption. This Interim Report starts with a discussion of the current anti-corruption framework and then proceeds with an examination of the available empirical research to establish how corruption in the business sector is addressed. Though these earlier surveys usefully highlight some general themes they are not directly comparable, provide only a limited understanding of the issue, and raise many unanswered questions. Sections 2 and 3 of this Report thus provide the context for the present authors’ own survey. Sections 4 and 5 discuss in detail the design and implementation of this survey (to date), which aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the extent to which key stakeholders are aware of and respond to different anti-corruption measures, the activities they are involved in for the purpose of combating corruption, and the factors which influence their behaviour in relation to corruption. As well as providing valuable insights with respect to company views and experiences this research is unique in also surveying NGOs. The findings of this research project should therefore lead to a greater understanding of stakeholder practices and perceptions, and consequently of how anti-corruption efforts might be strengthened. Whilst it would be premature to draw conclusions at this pilot stage, the findings of the pilot survey discussed in Section 6 highlight the value of investigating stakeholder views in this way, as well as raising some interesting possibilities regarding assumptions about their actions and motivations and additional questions for the next phase of the survey

    Discovery of common and rare genetic risk variants for colorectal cancer.

    To further dissect the genetic architecture of colorectal cancer (CRC), we performed whole-genome sequencing of 1,439 cases and 720 controls, imputed discovered sequence variants and Haplotype Reference Consortium panel variants into genome-wide association study data, and tested for association in 34,869 cases and 29,051 controls. Findings were followed up in an additional 23,262 cases and 38,296 controls. We discovered a strongly protective 0.3% frequency variant signal at CHD1. In a combined meta-analysis of 125,478 individuals, we identified 40 new independent signals at P < 5 × 10-8, bringing the number of known independent signals for CRC to ~100. New signals implicate lower-frequency variants, KrĂŒppel-like factors, Hedgehog signaling, Hippo-YAP signaling, long noncoding RNAs and somatic drivers, and support a role for immune function. Heritability analyses suggest that CRC risk is highly polygenic, and larger, more comprehensive studies enabling rare variant analysis will improve understanding of biology underlying this risk and influence personalized screening strategies and drug development.Goncalo R Abecasis has received compensation from 23andMe and Helix.     Multiple novel prostate cancer susceptibility signals identified by fine-mapping of known risk loci among Europeans

    Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified numerous common prostate cancer (PrCa) susceptibility loci. We have fine-mapped 64 GWAS regions known at the conclusion of the iCOGS study using large-scale genotyping and imputation in 25 723 PrCa cases and 26 274 controls of European ancestry. We detected evidence for multiple independent signals at 16 regions, 12 of which contained additional newly identified significant associations. A single signal comprising a spectrum of correlated variation was observed at 39 regions; 35 of which are now described by a novel more significantly associated lead SNP, while the originally reported variant remained as the lead SNP only in 4 regions. We also confirmed two association signals in Europeans that had been previously reported only in East-Asian GWAS. Based on statistical evidence and linkage disequilibrium (LD) structure, we have curated and narrowed down the list of the most likely candidate causal variants for each region. Functional annotation using data from ENCODE filtered for PrCa cell lines and eQTL analysis demonstrated significant enrichment for overlap with bio-features within this set. By incorporating the novel risk variants identified here alongside the refined data for existing association signals, we estimate that these loci now explain ∌38.9% of the familial relative risk of PrCa, an 8.9% improvement over the previously reported GWAS tag SNPs. This suggests that a significant fraction of the heritability of PrCa may have been hidden during the discovery phase of GWAS, in particular due to the presence of multiple independent signals within the same regio

    Integrated genomic characterization of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

    We performed integrated genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic profiling of 150 pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) specimens, including samples with characteristic low neoplastic cellularity. Deep whole-exome sequencing revealed recurrent somatic mutations in KRAS, TP53, CDKN2A, SMAD4, RNF43, ARID1A, TGFÎČR2, GNAS, RREB1, and PBRM1. KRAS wild-type tumors harbored alterations in other oncogenic drivers, including GNAS, BRAF, CTNNB1, and additional RAS pathway genes. A subset of tumors harbored multiple KRAS mutations, with some showing evidence of biallelic mutations. Protein profiling identified a favorable prognosis subset with low epithelial-mesenchymal transition and high MTOR pathway scores. Associations of non-coding RNAs with tumor-specific mRNA subtypes were also identified. Our integrated multi-platform analysis reveals a complex molecular landscape of PDAC and provides a roadmap for precision medicine

    TRY plant trait database – enhanced coverage and open access

    Plant traits - the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants - determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait‐based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits - almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. This can only be achieved in collaboration with other initiatives
