Hydrogen in Type Ic Supernovae?
By definition, a Type Ic supernova (SN Ic) does not have conspicuous lines of
hydrogen or helium in its optical spectrum. SNe Ic usually are modelled in
terms of the gravitational collapse of bare carbon-oxygen cores. We consider
the possibility that the spectra of ordinary (SN 1994I-like) SNe Ic have been
misinterpreted, and that SNe Ic eject hydrogen. An absorption feature usually
attributed to a blend of Si II 6355 and C II 6580 may be produced by H-alpha.
If SN 1994I-like SNe Ic eject hydrogen, the possibility that hypernova (SN
1998bw-like) SNe Ic, some of which are associated with gamma-ray bursts, also
eject hydrogen should be considered. The implications of hydrogen for SN Ic
progenitors and explosion models are briefly discussed.Comment: Accepted by PASP. Several significant changes including one

Supernova Resonance-Scattering Profiles in the Presence of External Illumination
We discuss a simple model for the formation of a supernova spectral line by
resonance scattering in the presence of external illumination of the
line-forming region by light from circumstellar interaction (toplighting). The
simple model provides a clear understanding of the most conspicuous toplighting
effect: a rescaling or, as we prefer, a ``muting'' of the line profile relative
to the continuum. This effect would be present in more realistic models, but
would be harder to isolate. An analytic expression for a muting factor for a
P-Cygni line is derived that depends on the ratio E of the toplighting specific
intensity to the specific intensity from the supernova photosphere. If E<1, the
line profile is reduced in scale or ``muted''. If E=1, the line profile
vanishes altogether. If E>1, the line profile flips vertically: then having an
absorption component near the observer-frame line center wavelength and a
blueshifted emission component.Comment: accepted for publication in PAS

Cousins Photometry and Temperatures for the Hyades, Coma, NGC 752, Praesepe, and M67
In this paper, new Cousins VRI data are presented for NGC 752 and Praesepe, and new and extant data are combined into an augmented database for M67. For those three clusters, catalogs containing Cousins VRI photometry, reddening-corrected values of (V -K)(J), and temperatures are produced. The same is done for Coma by using both previously published and newly derived Cousins photometry. An extant set of catalogs for the Hyades is updated to include V magnitudes and values of (R -I)(C) that were published after the original catalogs appeared. Finally, M67 V magnitudes published previously by Sandquist are corrected for an effect that depends on location on the face of the cluster. The corrected data and values of (V -I)(C) given by Sandquist are then set out in a supplementary catalog. Data files containing all of these catalogs are deposited in the CDS archives. To assess the quality of the data in the catalogs, the consistency of extant Cousins VRI databases is tested by performing analyses with the following features: (1) quantities as small as a few millimags are regarded as meaningful; (2) statistical analysis is applied; (3) no use is made of data other than VRI measurements and comparable results; (4) no inferences are drawn from color-magnitude comparisons; (5) pertinent data that have not been included previously are analyzed; and (6) results based on direct comparisons of stellar groups at the telescope are featured. In this way, it is found that our updated M67 color data and those of Sandquist are on the E region zero point. In contrast, values of (V -I)(C) from Montgomery and collaborators are found to be too red by 27 +/- 3 mmag, with an even larger offset being likely for unpublished data from Richer and his collaborators. Zero-point tests of our Cousins VRI colors for Coma, Praesepe, and NGC 752 are also satisfactory. Scale factor tests of the M67 colors are performed, and a likely scale factor error in the Montgomery et al. colors is found. However, it appears at present that the scale factors of our M67 colors and those of Sandquist are satisfactory. For the most part, zero-point tests of the assembled V magnitudes are also satisfactory, although it is found that further work on the V magnitudes for Praesepe and M67 would be useful. To put these results in perspective, it is pointed out that photometric tests that are satisfactory at the few-millimag level have been published for some two decades and so are not appearing for the first time in this paper.Astronom
Environmental triage decisions during a drought
The Murray Darling Basin Current is currently in drought. There are low water levels in most dams, and increased uncertainty about future rainfall. As a result management of the ecosystems in the basin that depend on river flows involves some hard decisions about what assets to save and what assets to let go. This paper models this triage problem using a stochastic and dynamic programming approach. This model is used to identify how optimal management is affected by hysteretic and irreversible effects of drought on ecosystem assets and uncertainty about future climate.Triage, irreversibility, climate change, Environmental Economics and Policy,
An analysis of ultraviolet spectra of Extreme Helium Stars and new clues to their origins
Abundances of about 18 elements including the heavy elements Y and Zr are
determined from Hubble Space Telescope Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph
ultraviolet spectra of seven extreme helium stars (EHes): LSE 78, BD+10 2179,
V1920 Cyg, HD 124448, PV Tel, LS IV -1 2, and FQ Aqr. New optical spectra of
the three stars -- BD+10 2179, V1920 Cyg, and HD 124448 were analysed. The
abundance analyses is done using LTE line formation and LTE model atmospheres
especially constructed for these EHe stars. The stellar parameters derived from
an EHe's UV spectrum are in satisfactory agreement with those derived from its
optical spectrum. Adopted abundances for the seven EHes are from a combination
of the UV and optical analyses. Published results for an additional ten EHes
provide abundances obtained in a nearly uniform manner for a total of 17 EHes,
the largest sample on record. The initial metallicity of an EHe is indicated by
the abundance of elements from Al to Ni; Fe is adopted to be the representative
of initial metallicity. Iron abundances range from approximately solar to about
one-hundredth of solar. Clues to EHe evolution are contained within the H, He,
C, N, O, Y, and Zr abundances. Two novel results are (i) the O abundance for
some stars is close to the predicted initial abundance yet the N abundance
indicates almost complete conversion of initial C, N, and O to N by the
CNO-cycles; (ii) three of the seven stars with UV spectra show a strong
enhancement of Y and Zr attributable to an s-process. The observed compositions
are discussed in light of expectations from accretion of a He white dwarf by a
CO white dwarf.Comment: 126 pages, 15 figures, 20 Tables, accepted for publication in the Ap
Genetic mapping, synteny, and physical location of two loci for Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. tracheiphilum race 4 resistance in cowpea [Vignaunguiculata (L.) Walp].
Fusarium wilt is a vascular disease caused by the fungus Fusariumoxysporum f.sp. tracheiphilum (Fot) in cowpea [Vignaunguiculata (L.) Walp]. In this study, we mapped loci conferring resistance to Fot race 4 in three cowpea RIL populations: IT93K-503-1 × CB46, CB27 × 24-125B-1, and CB27 × IT82E-18/Big Buff. Two independent loci which confer resistance to Fot race 4 were identified, Fot4-1 and Fot4-2. Fot4-1 was identified in the IT93K-503-1 (resistant) × CB46 (susceptible) population and was positioned on the cowpea consensus genetic map, spanning 21.57-29.40 cM on linkage group 5. The Fot4-2 locus was validated by identifying it in both the CB27 (resistant) × 24-125B-1 (susceptible) and CB27 (resistant) × IT82E-18/Big Buff (susceptible) populations. Fot4-2 was positioned on the cowpea consensus genetic map on linkage group 3; the minimum distance spanned 71.52-71.75 cM whereas the maximum distance spanned 64.44-80.23 cM. These genomic locations of Fot4-1 and Fot4-2 on the cowpea consensus genetic map, relative to Fot3-1 which was previously identified as the locus conferring resistance to Fot race 3, established that all three loci were independent. The Fot4-1 and Fot4-2 syntenic loci were examined in Glycine max, where several disease-resistance candidate genes were identified for both loci. In addition, Fot4-1 and Fot4-2 were coarsely positioned on the cowpea physical map. Fot4-1 and Fot4-2 will contribute to molecular marker development for future use in marker-assisted selection, thereby expediting introgression of Fot race 4 resistance into future cowpea cultivars
Subaru and Swift observations of V652 Herculis: resolving the photospheric pulsation
High-resolution spectroscopy with the Subaru High Dispersion Spectrograph, and Swift ultraviolet photometry are presented for the pulsating extreme helium star V652 Her. Swift provides the best relative ultraviolet photometry obtained to date, but shows no direct evidence for a shock at ultraviolet or X-ray wavelengths. Subaru has provided high spectral and high temporal resolution spectroscopy over six pulsation cycles (and eight radius minima).
These data have enabled a line-by-line analysis of the entire pulsation cycle and provided a description of the pulsating photosphere as a function of optical depth. They show that the photosphere is compressed radially by a factor of at least 2 at minimum radius, that the phase of radius minimum is a function of optical depth and the pulse speed through the photosphere is between 141 and 239 km s−1 (depending how measured) and at least 10 times the local sound speed. The strong acceleration at minimum radius is demonstrated in individual line profiles; those formed deepest in the photosphere show a jump discontinuity of over 70 kms−1 on a time-scale of 150 s. The pulse speed and line profile jumps imply a shock is present at minimum radius. These empirical results provide input for hydrodynamical modelling of the pulsation and hydrodynamical plus radiative transfer modelling of the dynamical spectra
A finite element conjugate gradient FFT method for scattering
Validated results are presented for the new 3D body of revolution finite element boundary integral code. A Fourier series expansion of the vector electric and mangnetic fields is employed to reduce the dimensionality of the system, and the exact boundary condition is employed to terminate the finite element mesh. The mesh termination boundary is chosen such that is leads to convolutional boundary operatores of low O(n) memory demand. Improvements of this code are discussed along with the proposed formulation for a full 3D implementation of the finite element boundary integral method in conjunction with a conjugate gradiant fast Fourier transformation (CGFFT) solution
