Above-ground biomass and structure of 260 African tropical forests.

We report above-ground biomass (AGB), basal area, stem density and wood mass density estimates from 260 sample plots (mean size: 1.2 ha) in intact closed-canopy tropical forests across 12 African countries. Mean AGB is 395.7 Mg dry mass ha⁻Âč (95% CI: 14.3), substantially higher than Amazonian values, with the Congo Basin and contiguous forest region attaining AGB values (429 Mg ha⁻Âč) similar to those of Bornean forests, and significantly greater than East or West African forests. AGB therefore appears generally higher in palaeo- compared with neotropical forests. However, mean stem density is low (426 ± 11 stems ha⁻Âč greater than or equal to 100 mm diameter) compared with both Amazonian and Bornean forests (cf. approx. 600) and is the signature structural feature of African tropical forests. While spatial autocorrelation complicates analyses, AGB shows a positive relationship with rainfall in the driest nine months of the year, and an opposite association with the wettest three months of the year; a negative relationship with temperature; positive relationship with clay-rich soils; and negative relationships with C : N ratio (suggesting a positive soil phosphorus-AGB relationship), and soil fertility computed as the sum of base cations. The results indicate that AGB is mediated by both climate and soils, and suggest that the AGB of African closed-canopy tropical forests may be particularly sensitive to future precipitation and temperature changes

    Angiographic exploration of male impotence

Selective pudendal arteriography is indicated in specific cases of male impotence when arterial lesions are presumed to be responsible. The examination is performed under general anaesthesia by catheterisation of both hypogastric arteries using the right femoral approach. One film/sec is taken in oblique projection for 20 sec starting at the end of an injection of 30 ml of contrast media which was injected at the rate of 3 ml/sec. This paper reports the results of a series of 18 patients (age 23-57). The arterial pattern was normal in 6 patients and arterio-sclerotic lesions were found in 9 cases. In the 3 remaining cases 1 was aplasia of both cavernous arteries, 1 a case of thromboangiitis and 1 a case of diabetic arteritis. No complication occurred after the examinations. Selective arteriography can establish the diagnosis and indicate the nature of the obstruction, its degree and extention.SCOPUS: NotDefined.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

PSYCHOLOGICAL COMPONENTS OF THE COMPLAINTS RELATED TO THE PENILE SIZE AFTER IMPLANTATION OF A PENILE PROSTHESIS

A survey questionnaire completed by 39 users of penile prosthesis shows that complaints related to the size of the implanted penis involve a decrease in satisfaction towards the prosthetic device. However, a reduced penile size is not necessary considered as a problem by all patients. Beyond functional considerations, the disappointment concerning the length of the penis is mostly related to the representation of a virility debased by the notions of artifice and assistance which are associated to the penile implant. Strong correlations are actually reported between a lower satisfaction, complaints related to the length of the implanted penis, feelings of shame, a lower self-esteem due to the idea of an "artificial virility" and a trend to attribute a negative attitude towards penile implant to the partner. On the whole, these variables appear to be the expression of a global castration experience that makes the psychosexual assimilation of the prosthesis rather precarious. This castration experience is derived from a certain representation of male erotic quality which requires long, natural and spontaneous erections. From this point of view, the injurious impact of reduced erections seems inseparable from an injurious representation of prosthetic sexuality globally perceived as a “parodic”, “reduced” virility. It is remarkable that none of these variables correlates with the partners' actual opinions concerning prosthesis and sexuality permitted by penile implant. Parallel questionnaires completed separately by 27 partners show that part of the men's injurious representation partakes of projective mechanisms. Such observations underline the relevance of a psychosexological approach of the couple in addition of the surgical approach.
