Changes in Emotional-Social Intelligence, Caring, Leadership and Moral Judgment during Health Science Education Programs
In addition to having academic knowledge and clinical skills, health professionals need to be caring, ethical practitioners able to understand the emotional concerns of their patients and to effect change. The purpose of this study was to determine whether emotional-social intelligence, caring, leadership and moral judgment of health science students change from the beginning to the end of their programs. Students from nursing, bachelor of health science and two physical therapy programs completed self-report questionnaires to evaluate emotional-social intelligence [BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory: Short (EQ-i:S)], caring [Caring Ability Inventory (CAI)] and leadership [Self-Assessment Leadership Inventory] at the beginning and end of their programs. Students in three of the programs also completed a test of moral decision-making [Defining Issues Test (DIT-2)] at both time points. Two-way analyses of variance (program versus time) demonstrated significant time effects for the total score of EQ-i:S, the Knowing subscale of CAI and the N2 score of the DIT-2. There were no major differences between programs. It can be concluded that health science students show small improvements in emotional-social intelligence, caring and moral judgment from the beginning to the end of their educational programs.
CD8+ T cells specific for a potential HLA-A*0201 epitope from Chlamydophila pneumoniae are present in the PBMCs from infected patients
Infection with the common pathogen Chlamydophila pneumoniae (Cpn, previously Chlamydia pneumoniae) has a high prevalence in patients suffering from arteriosclerosis and may trigger or contribute to heart disease. In mice, CD8-positive T cells are critical for the eradication of the infection and the development of immune memory against Cpn. Although several H2-class I epitopes have been described, no HLA-class I-associated peptides from Cpn are known. In order to define HLA-A*0201 epitopes from Cpn, we focused on the bacterial heat shock proteins (HSP) 60 and 70 which are known to be recognized by the immune system. Using epitope prediction, peptide binding studies and peptide-specific CTLs from HLA-A2 transgenic mice, we could define a potential HSP-70-derived epitope. The study of PBMCs from Cpn-infected individuals using fluorescent MHC tetramers revealed that some patients have CD8+ T cells capable of recognizing the Cpn HSP-70 HLA-A*0201 epitope. Our studies pave the way to the immunomonitoring of the anti-Cpn CTL immune response present in patients suffering from different diseases potentially linked to Cpn or anti-Cpn immunit
The factor validity of the Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index
BACKGROUND: The Western Ontario Rotator Cuff Index (WORC) is a self-report questionnaire developed specifically to evaluate disability in persons with pathology of the rotator cuff of the shoulder. The authors created items in 5 categories based on a model of quality of life, but never validated this structure. The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of the original 5-domain model of the WORC by performing factor analysis. METHODS: Three hundred twenty nine subjects (age, mean: 52, SD: 12) were tested prior to undergoing surgery for rotator cuff pathologies. They completed the WORC, a self-report questionnaire, which has 21 items on the effect of the rotator cuff problem on symptoms, activities and emotions. Statistical calculations included correlations between items, Cronbach's alpha of the total scale and subscales, and principal component factor analysis with oblique rotation. RESULTS: Correlations ranged from .09 to .70 between all the items, from .29 to .70 between items within a subscale, and from .53 to .72 between subscale scores. Cronbach's alpha was .93 for the total scale, and .72 to .82 for the subscales. The factor analysis produced 3 factors that explained 57% of the variance. The first factor included symptoms and emotional items, the second included strength items and the third included daily activities. CONCLUSION: The results of this study did not support the 5-domain model of the WORC
Quantum quenches from integrability: the fermionic pairing model
Understanding the non-equilibrium dynamics of extended quantum systems after
the trigger of a sudden, global perturbation (quench) represents a daunting
challenge, especially in the presence of interactions. The main difficulties
stem from both the vanishing time scale of the quench event, which can thus
create arbitrarily high energy modes, and its non-local nature, which curtails
the utility of local excitation bases. We here show that nonperturbative
methods based on integrability can prove sufficiently powerful to completely
characterize quantum quenches: we illustrate this using a model of fermions
with pairing interactions (Richardson's model). The effects of simple (and
multiple) quenches on the dynamics of various important observables are
discussed. Many of the features we find are expected to be universal to all
kinds of quench situations in atomic physics and condensed matter.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

Real-Time Microbiology Laboratory Surveillance System to Detect Abnormal Events and Emerging Infections, Marseille, France
International audienceInfectious diseases are a major threat to humanity, and accurate surveillance is essential. We describe how to implement a laboratory dataâbased surveillance system in a clinical microbiology laboratory. Two historical Microsoft Excel databases were implemented. The data were then sorted and used to execute the following 2 surveillance systems in Excel: the Bacterial real-time Laboratory-based Surveillance System (BALYSES) for monitoring the number of patients infected with bacterial species isolated at least once in our laboratory during the study periodl and the Marseille Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance System (MARSS), which surveys the primary ÎČ-lactam resistance phenotypes for 15 selected bacterial species. The first historical database contained 174,853 identifications of bacteria, and the second contained 12,062 results of antibiotic susceptibility testing. From May 21, 2013, through June 4, 2014, BALYSES and MARSS enabled the detection of 52 abnormal events for 24 bacterial species, leading to 19 official reports. Reflections of physiotherapy students in the United Arab Emirates during their clinical placements: A qualitative study
BACKGROUND: Although Western models of education are being used to establish health professional programs in non-Western countries, little is known about how students in these countries perceive their learning experiences. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the reflections of physiotherapy students from a Middle East culture during their clinical placements and to compare them to reflections of physiotherapy students from a Western culture. METHODS: Subjects were six senior students (3 females, 3 males, mean age 22.6 years) and 15 junior, female students (mean age 20.1 years) in the baccalaureate physiotherapy program at a university in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). They wrote weekly entries in a journal while in their clinical placements. They described an event, their reaction to it, and how it might affect their future behavior. Two evaluators independently read and coded the content of all the journals, and then worked together to categorize the data and develop themes. A third evaluator, an UAE national, independently read the journals to validate the content analysis. A feedback session with students was used to further validate the data interpretation. The themes were compared to those derived from a similar study of Canadian physiotherapy students. RESULTS: The content of the students' reflections were grouped into 4 themes: professional behavior, awareness of learning, self-development and shift to a patient orientation, and identification and analysis of ethical issues. Although the events were different, students from the UAE considered many of the same issues reflected on by Canadian students. CONCLUSION: Physiotherapy students from a Middle East culture consider many of the same issues as students from a Western culture when asked to reflect on their clinical experience. They reflect on their personal growth, on how they learn in a clinical setting, and on the ethical and professional behaviors of themselves and others
Track reconstruction at LHC as a collaborative data challenge use case with RAMP
Charged particle track reconstruction is a major component of data-processing in high-energy physics experiments such as those at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and is foreseen to become more and more challenging with higher collision rates. A simplified two-dimensional version of the track reconstruction problem is set up on a collaborative platform, RAMP, in order for the developers to prototype and test new ideas. A small-scale competition was held during the Connecting The Dots / Intelligent Trackers 2017 (CTDWIT 2017) workshop. Despite the short time scale, a number of different approaches have been developed and compared along a single score metric, which was kept generic enough to accommodate a summarized performance in terms of both efficiency and fake rates
