Deep Markov Random Field for Image Modeling
Markov Random Fields (MRFs), a formulation widely used in generative image
modeling, have long been plagued by the lack of expressive power. This issue is
primarily due to the fact that conventional MRFs formulations tend to use
simplistic factors to capture local patterns. In this paper, we move beyond
such limitations, and propose a novel MRF model that uses fully-connected
neurons to express the complex interactions among pixels. Through theoretical
analysis, we reveal an inherent connection between this model and recurrent
neural networks, and thereon derive an approximated feed-forward network that
couples multiple RNNs along opposite directions. This formulation combines the
expressive power of deep neural networks and the cyclic dependency structure of
MRF in a unified model, bringing the modeling capability to a new level. The
feed-forward approximation also allows it to be efficiently learned from data.
Experimental results on a variety of low-level vision tasks show notable
improvement over state-of-the-arts.Comment: Accepted at ECCV 201

Extragalactic Science, Cosmology and Galactic Archaeology with the Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS)
The Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) is a massively-multiplexed
fiber-fed optical and near-infrared 3-arm spectrograph (N_fiber=2400,
380<lambda<1260nm, 1.3 degree diameter FoV), offering unique opportunities in
survey astronomy. Here we summarize the science case feasible for a survey of
Subaru 300 nights. We describe plans to constrain the nature of dark energy via
a survey of emission line galaxies spanning a comoving volume of 9.3 (Gpc/h)^3
in the redshift range 0.8<z<2.4. In each of 6 redshift bins, the cosmological
distances will be measured to 3% precision via BAO, and redshift-space
distortions will be used to constrain structure growth to 6% precision. In the
GA program, radial velocities and chemical abundances of stars in the Milky Way
and M31 will be used to infer the past assembly histories of spiral galaxies
and the structure of their dark matter halos. Data will be secured for 10^6
stars in the Galactic thick-disk, halo and tidal streams as faint as V~22,
including stars with V < 20 to complement the goals of the Gaia mission. A
medium-resolution mode with R = 5000 to be implemented in the red arm will
allow the measurement of multiple alpha-element abundances and more precise
velocities for Galactic stars, elucidating the detailed chemo-dynamical
structure and evolution of each of the main stellar components of the Milky Way
Galaxy and of its dwarf spheroidal galaxies. For the extragalactic program, our
simulations suggest the wide avelength range will be powerful in probing the
galaxy population and its clustering over a wide redshift range. We propose to
conduct a color-selected survey of 1<z<2 galaxies and AGN over 16 deg^2 to
J~23.4, yielding a fair sample of galaxies with stellar masses above ~10^{10}Ms
at z~2. A two-tiered survey of higher redshift LBGs and LAEs will quantify the
properties of early systems close to the reionization epoch.Comment: This document describes the scientific program and requirements for

Meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of asthma in ethnically diverse North American populations.
Asthma is a common disease with a complex risk architecture including both genetic and environmental factors. We performed a meta-analysis of North American genome-wide association studies of asthma in 5,416 individuals with asthma (cases) including individuals of European American, African American or African Caribbean, and Latino ancestry, with replication in an additional 12,649 individuals from the same ethnic groups. We identified five susceptibility loci. Four were at previously reported loci on 17q21, near IL1RL1, TSLP and IL33, but we report for the first time, to our knowledge, that these loci are associated with asthma risk in three ethnic groups. In addition, we identified a new asthma susceptibility locus at PYHIN1, with the association being specific to individuals of African descent (P = 3.9 × 10(-9)). These results suggest that some asthma susceptibility loci are robust to differences in ancestry when sufficiently large samples sizes are investigated, and that ancestry-specific associations also contribute to the complex genetic architecture of asthma

A high-resolution map of human evolutionary constraint using 29 mammals.
The comparison of related genomes has emerged as a powerful lens for genome interpretation. Here we report the sequencing and comparative analysis of 29 eutherian genomes. We confirm that at least 5.5% of the human genome has undergone purifying selection, and locate constrained elements covering ∼4.2% of the genome. We use evolutionary signatures and comparisons with experimental data sets to suggest candidate functions for ∼60% of constrained bases. These elements reveal a small number of new coding exons, candidate stop codon readthrough events and over 10,000 regions of overlapping synonymous constraint within protein-coding exons. We find 220 candidate RNA structural families, and nearly a million elements overlapping potential promoter, enhancer and insulator regions. We report specific amino acid residues that have undergone positive selection, 280,000 non-coding elements exapted from mobile elements and more than 1,000 primate- and human-accelerated elements. Overlap with disease-associated variants indicates that our findings will be relevant for studies of human biology, health and disease

Hyperpolarized 13C-MRI of Tumor Metabolism Demonstrates Early Metabolic Response to Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Breast Cancer
Purpose: To compare hyperpolarized carbon-13 (13C)-MRI with dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) for detecting early treatment response in breast cancer.
Materials and Methods: In this institutional review board-approved prospective study, one woman with triple-negative breast cancer (age 49) underwent 13C-MRI following injection of hyperpolarized [1-13C]pyruvate and DCE-MRI at 3 T at baseline and after a single cycle of neoadjuvant therapy. The 13C-lactate/13C-pyruvate ratio derived from hyperpolarized 13C-MRI and the pharmacokinetic parameters Ktrans and kep derived from DCE-MRI were compared, before and after treatment.
Results: Exchange of the 13C-label between injected hyperpolarized [1-13C]pyruvate and the endogenous lactate pool was demonstrated, catalyzed by the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase. After one cycle of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, a 34% reduction in the 13C-lactate/13C-pyruvate ratio was shown to correctly identify the patient as a responder to therapy, which was subsequently confirmed by a complete pathologic response. However, DCE-MRI showed an increase in the pharmacokinetic parameters Ktrans (132%) and kep (31%), which could be incorrectly interpreted as a poor response to treatment.

An Experimental Analysis Of the Demand For Payday Loans
The payday loan industry is one of the fastest growing segments of the consumer financial services market in the United States. We design an environment similar to the one that payday loan customers face and then conduct a laboratory experiment to examine what effect, if any, the existence of payday loans has on individuals\u27 abilities to manage and to survive financial setbacks. Our primary objective is to examine whether access to payday loans improves or worsens the likelihood of financial survival in our experiment. We also test the degree to which people\u27s use of payday loans affects their ability to survive financially. We find that payday loans help the subjects to absorb expenditure shocks and therefore survive financially. However, subjects whose demand for payday loans exceeds a certain threshold level are at a greater risk than a corresponding subject in the treatment in which payday loans do not exist
Cross-National Differences in Victimization : Disentangling the Impact of Composition and Context
Varying rates of criminal victimization across countries are assumed to be the outcome of countrylevel structural constraints that determine the supply ofmotivated o¡enders, as well as the differential composition within countries of suitable targets and capable guardianship. However, previous empirical tests of these ‘compositional’ and ‘contextual’ explanations of cross-national di¡erences
have been performed upon macro-level crime data due to the unavailability of comparable individual-level data across countries. This limitation has had two important consequences for cross-national crime research. First, micro-/meso-level mechanisms underlying cross-national differences cannot be truly inferred from macro-level data. Secondly, the e¡ects of contextual measures (e.g. income inequality) on crime are uncontrolled for compositional heterogeneity. In this
paper, these limitations are overcome by analysing individual-level victimization data across 18 countries from the International CrimeVictims Survey. Results from multi-level analyses on theft and violent victimization indicate that the national level of income inequality is positively related to risk, independent of compositional (i.e. micro- and meso-level) di¡erences. Furthermore, crossnational variation in victimization rates is not only shaped by di¡erences in national context, but
also by varying composition. More speci¢cally, countries had higher crime rates the more they consisted of urban residents and regions with lowaverage social cohesion.
