The present master’s thesis is a translation critique of two German translations of H. P. Lovecraft’s short story "The Call of Cthulhu". The paper aims to analyse the translations, which were published in 1968 and 2006, according to the functional model of translation critique proposed by Margret Ammann. Before discussing Ammann’s target-text-oriented model, the theoretical part will give an overview of Hans J. Vermeer’s skopos theory, Justa Holz-Mänttäri‘s theory of translational action and Charles Fillmore’s scenes-and-frames-semantics as elaborated for translation studies. These theories represent the theoretical foundations of Ammann’s model. The following chapter offers essential background information on the story and the literary genre of Weird Fiction. The main chapter aims to analyse the translations and the source text according to the five steps of analysis proposed by Ammann. Altogether thir-teen excerpts are selected. The analysis confirmed the assumption that the translators would use different translation strategies, as both texts are separated by four decades. The instances of omission and incoherence detected in the first translation support the idea of a new translation. Still, even the second translation was found to contain instances of intratextual and intertextual incoherence

In this thesis the development of technologies for lithographic processes for the fabrication of high-frequency diffractive thin film elements directly on the end-faces of optical fibres is described. For this purpose lithographic procedures, optimised for wafer processing lithographic procedures, have to be modified in a convenient way. This concerns the fabrication of the layers as well as the processing and the required process parameters. In dependence on used materials and structural dimensions different functionalities of the structured layers can be implemented. Two different systems are applied for exposure. Direct laser writing at 442 nm exposure wavelength is used for the fabrication of structures with grating periods larger than 3 µm. For the realisation of high-frequency gratings with periods smaller than 1 µm laser interference lithography utilizing an excimerlaser emitting at a wavelength of 248 nm is applied. At this specific wavelength is investigated the feasibility to structure a resist which is actually designed for electron-beam-lithography also by interference lithography. Due to its unique properties like small sensitivity to humidity, good long-term stability, good adhesion and simplified process management this resist is particularly well-suited for the development of technologies for the structuring of materials on fibre-end-faces. Suitable parameters for the realisation of high-frequency grating structures regarding exposure and general processing parameters for different substrate layers are determined.Structuring of metallic layers on fibre-end-faces results in fibre based lithographic masks which can be used for efficient and reproducible photolithography on fibre-end-faces by fibre-to-fibre exposure.Efficient fibre-coupled high-index-contrast gratings can be realised by direct excimerlaser interference lithography surface-structuring of high-frequency gratings in high-index layers of As35S65 at the end-face of fused-silica-fibres. Wavelength and polarising filters based on such gratings are designed, appropriate exposure conditions are determined and the properties of realised structures are compared to results of simulations

Finite minds and their representations in Leibniz and Kant

    Get PDF
This essay examines some of the ways in which the assumption of the essential finitude of the human mind, in contrast to the infinitude of God’s mind, bears on Leibniz’s and Kant’s accounts of our representational capacities. This examination reveals several underappreciated similarities between their views, but also some notable differences that help us pinpoint where and in what ways Kant departs from his celebrated predecessor. The fruits of this examination are a better understanding of Kant’s conception of the discursivity of our understanding, his account of the difference between concepts and intuitions, and the particular flavor of his idealism

    Kant, the Leibnizians, and Leibniz

A popular story about Kant's relation to Leibniz presents Kant as a Leibniz-Wolffian by education who, inspired by his encounter with the teachings of Newton and Hume, took on the project of reconciling Leibniz-Wolffian metaphysics with Newtonian science and of responding to epistemological skepticism, a project that led him further and further away from his Leibniz-Wolffian roots and culminated in the total rejection of the Leibniz-Wolffian philosophy in the Critique of Pure Reason. In this essay, four shortcomings of the popular story are identified and several suggestions are made about how to amend and expand the story in order to overcome these shortcomings. Furthermore, some of the most important Leibnizian doctrines that influenced Kant are collected and their role in Kant's philosophy is discussed

Práce se zaměřuje na historiografické prameny, které uvádějí postavu Bruta z Tróje, především Dějiny britských králů od...4 Abstract This paper focuses on using narratives about the origins of princely power among late medieval rulers to justify their legitimacy. Its principal aim is to reveal the intercon- nectedness of widespread narrative sources such as chronicles and romances, on the one hand, with still understudied sources such as armorials, heraldic miscellanies and genea- logical scrolls, on the other. The latter type of source has recently begun to attract more medievalists, but it isn't easy to work with them for several reasons. Little is known about the practical use of materials such as genealogical scrolls, which can be more than five metres long. Another reason is that this type of source combines several different aspects. It combines textual, pictorial and diagrammatic parts, which form an integral unit that cannot be dissected and examined separately. This type of source was fully charged with historical, prophetic and symbolic content and was probably intended to serve not only representational but also propagandistic purposes for the rulers. In this thesis, I trace the use of historical narratives on the figure of Brutus of Troy, the eponymous founder of the Insular Kingdom of Britain in late medieval England and Wales. The thesis focuses on his- toriographical sources that introduce the figure of Brutus...Ústav českých dějinInstitute of Czech HistoryFilozofická fakultaFaculty of Art

    Surrounded by Ancestors

The ruling dynasties quite literally surrounded themselves with their ancestors (real ones, as well as imaginary ones), creating galleries of their predecessors or artifacts, such as scrolls with genealogical diagrams. A lineage represented in such a manner could then be displayed not only for the royal family but also for their courtiers and foreign diplomats, reminding everyone of the position of the depicted dynasty in contemporary political struggles and in the history of Christianity. This argument is underlined by the fact that within the portrayal of the family, the prophecies of the end of the world and the approach of the Kingdom of Heaven were included as well. The paper examines how the members of two great European dynasties (Luxembourg and Plantagenet) used pedigrees, which real members they emphasized in them, and which imaginary characters they incorporated into their lineage. Two presented case studies consist of an ancestral gallery of Luxembourg from Karlštejn Castle and a pedigree scroll of Edward IV from the Plantagenet dynasty. This project aims to evaluate the material from geographically distant areas and to look for common features of pedigree construction strategies
