    A Preliminary List of the Mycetophilidae (Diptera) Known to Occur in Iowa

    The Dipterous family Mycetophilidae is composed of small to medium sized flies, ranging from two to nine millimeters in length. These fungus-gnats are numerous both in species and in number of individuals to be found in a local habitat. Characteristics of the legs that are particularly noticeable are as follows: elongated coxae, thickened femur and, spured and setose tibia. The adult resembles a mosquito in that it has a small head, antennae with twelve to seventeen joints and a highly arched thorax. Predominating colors are yellow and black; the abdominal segments often have alternate bands of black and yellow. The males have a complex hypopygia, which is important in the identification of the species

    The Dolichopidae are small flies not exceeding eight millimeters in length, and are almost always bright metallic green or blue in color. The adults are found especially ahundant on plants around sand and mud, as well as on rocks and plants in the water. They are predaceous flies living on small, soft bodied insects. The genera Laxina, Condylostylus and Sciapus may be found on leaves of shaded flowers in search of food. These flies may be readily distinguished from the members of other families by the absence of a cross vein between the discal and the second basal cell, these uniting to form a single cell

    High-Temperature Corrosion Testing of Uranium Silicide Surrogates

    The corrosion resistance of cerium silicide, a surrogate of uranium silicide, is investigated to gain insight into the reaction of uranium silicide with water. As-received and proton-irradiated Ce3Si2, CeSi2, and CeSi1.x monolithic pellets are subjected to corrosion tests in water at 300°C and 9 MPa for up to 48 h. Results show that an oxide layer composed of Ce4.67 (SiO4)3O forms on the surface of all samples, and it grows thicker with extended exposure times. Irradiated samples corrode to a greater extent than their unirradiated counterparts, which is mainly a result of the existing post-irradiation cerium oxide and the presence of ion-induced defects. Most of the Ce3Si2 samples crack (as-received) or fracture (ion-irradiated) during testing, which is due to the brittleness of the samples and oxide erosion/spallation that occur during testing

    Vibration-induced granular segregation: a phenomenon driven by three mechanisms

    The segregation of large spheres in a granular bed under vertical vibrations is studied. In our experiments we systematically measure rise times as a function of density, diameter and depth; for two different sinusoidal excitations. The measurements reveal that: at low frequencies, inertia and convection are the only mechanisms behind segregation. Inertia (convection) dominates when the relative density is greater (less) than one. At high frequencies, where convection is suppressed, fluidization of the granular bed causes either buoyancy or sinkage and segregation occurs.Comment: 4 pages. 3 figures, revtex4, to appear in PRL (in press

    Walking with Different Insoles Changes Lower-Limb Biomechanics Globally in Patients with Medial Knee Osteoarthritis.

    Using insoles to modify walking biomechanics is of keen interest for the treatment of medial-compartment knee osteoarthritis. So far, insole interventions have focused on reducing the peak of the knee adduction moment (pKAM) and have led to inconsistent clinical outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in other gait variables related to knee osteoarthritis when patients walk with different insoles to provide insights into the necessity to enlarge the biomechanical analyses to other variables. Walking trials were recorded for 10 patients in four insole conditions. Changes among conditions were computed for six gait variables, including the pKAM. The associations between the changes in pKAM and the changes in the other variables were also assessed individually. Walking with different insoles had noticeable effects on the six gait variables, with high heterogeneity among patients. For all variables, at least 36.67% of the changes were of medium-to-large effect size. The associations with the changes in pKAM varied among variables and patients. In conclusion, this study showed that varying the insole could globally influence ambulatory biomechanics and that limiting measurement to the pKAM could lead to an important loss of information. Beyond the consideration of additional gait variables, this study also encourages personalized interventions to address inter-patient variability

    A Preliminary List of Some Families of Iowa Insects

    For some ten years the Iowa Insect Survey has been collecting specimens and data from all parts of this state in a study of the geographic and seasonal distribution of the insects of Iowa. Comparatively little has been done heretofore with most of the families of the Hymenoptera and the Diptera of Iowa. With the hope of stimulating a more general interest in these groups, preliminary lists of the species now known to occur within the state are being submitted. Students in systematic Entomology in the college have taken a family and given it special attention in their collecting for one or more years. These students have collaborated with the senior author in the preparation of this paper. The name of the student thus taking the responsibility of getting a list for a family in shape is printed at the head of the list. Determinations throughout the list have been made or checked by specialists as indicated for each group. Assistance given by the Iowa Academy of Science and the State University of Iowa has helped materially in keeping the Survey going

Such is the Dipterous family Dolichopodac. The discal and the second basal cell of the wing are coalescent. Wing venation is simple but the last section of the fourth longitudinal vein has very striking and definite characteristics

    Sublethal effects of oil spills may dampen seabird rehabilitation success due to lingering negative impacts of contamination and stress on reproduction and long-term survival. These effects can be difficult to measure while birds are in care as well as once birds are released. Expression of sexually selected traits that are sensitive to condition can provide information on physiological status of birds. We evaluated plumage molt and gular pouch skin color of California brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis californicus) following oil contamination and rehabilitation to test for differences between previously oiled and rehabilitated (post-spill) and presumably uncontaminated pelicans. Post-spill pelicans released with either color leg bands alone, or bands plus harness-mounted satellite GPS tags, were relocated and visually assessed in the field at non-breeding communal roosts and compared to surrounding unmarked pelicans in the general population. Non-oiled pelicans bearing GPS tags were also included in the study. Post-spill pelicans lagged the general population in molt of ornamental yellow crown feathers but hind neck transition into white plumage was not significantly different. Both post-spill and non-oiled pelicans wearing GPS tags had lower gular redness scores than the unmarked, non-oiled population. Pre-breeding gular pouch redness of post-spill pelicans was more strongly influenced by wearing of a GPS tag than a history of oil contamination and rehabilitation. Gular pouch redness of post-spill pelicans in the first 18 months after release was positively correlated with long term survivorship. If gular pouch color is a condition-dependent sexual signal and overall health influences plumage molt progression, our results indicate that many post-spill pelicans marked with bands alone were in relatively good condition going into the next breeding season, but those released with electronic tags experienced additional stress due to wearing the equipment, introducing a confounding variable to the post-release study
