The topologically twisted index of super-Yang-Mills on and the elliptic genus
We examine the topologically twisted index of super-Yang-Mills
with gauge group on , and demonstrate that it receives
contributions from multiple sectors corresponding to the freely acting
orbifolds where . After summing over
these sectors, the index can be expressed as the elliptic genus of a
two-dimensional theory resulting from Kaluza-Klein reduction
on . This provides an alternate path to the 'high-temperature' limit of
the index, and confirms the connection to the right-moving central charge of
the theory.Comment: 29 pages, 1 figure; v2: restricted to real chemical potentials in

The Pure Ego and Sartre\u27s Transcendence of the Ego
In this exploration piece, the author attempts to present a clear picture of Husserlian and (pre-Critique of Dialectical Reason) Sartrean phenomenology via a critique of Sartreâs theory of the transcendent ego. Is there is need for a unifying I, or does Sartreâs formulation of consciousness as primordial read more compellingly? Is the ego built by states and actions and vice versa, or does Sartre have the better answer with the ego being constituted through states constituted by consciousnesses? The author points out that Sartreâs positions lead to the problem of consciousness unification. Plus, Sartreâs criticisms of Husserl can be nullified. Furthermore, Sartreâs desire for individual freedom actually betrays him in his response to the supposed hampering of consciousness caused by the pure ego. Whatâs really at stake is a clear description of the self: the egoâs relation to consciousness
Subleading corrections to the free energy of necklace quiver theories dual to massive IIA
We investigate the free energy of Chern-Simons-matter
quiver gauge theories with gauge group where the sum of
Chern-Simons levels does not vanish, beyond the leading order in the large-
expansion. We take two different approaches to explore the sub-leading
structures of the free energy. First we evaluate the matrix integral for the
partition function in the 't~Hooft limit using a saddle point approximation.
Second we use an ideal Fermi-gas model to compute the same partition function,
but in the limit of fixed Chern-Simons levels. The resulting expressions for
the free energy are consistent with each other at the leading and
first sub-leading order. The Fermi-gas approach also hints at a universal
correction to the free energy. Since the quiver gauge
theories we consider are dual to massive Type IIA theory, we expect our results
to match sub-leading corrections to the holographic dual free energy, which
have not yet been fully investigated.Comment: v1: 50 pages, 1figure; v2: minor revision
Mutations in retrotransposon AtCOPIA4 compromises resistance to Hyaloperonospora parasitica in Arabidopsis thaliana
Retrotransposons (RTEs) are a principal component of most eukaryotic genomes, representing 50%-80% of some grass genomes. RTE sequences have been shown to be preferentially present in disease resistance gene clusters in plants. Arabidopsis thaliana has over 1,600 annotated RTE sequences and 56 of these appear to be expressed because of the exact expressed sequence tag (EST) matches and the presence of intact open reading frames. Of the 22 represented in the Affymetrix ATH1 array, AtCOPIA4 was found to be expressed at a higher level than all other RTEs across different developmental stages. Since AtCOPIA4 is located in the RPP5 gene cluster and is adjacent to RPP4 which confers resistance to the downy mildew oomycete Hyaloperonospora parasitica isolate EMWA1, we evaluated AtCOPIA4 mutants for resistance to this pathogen. T-DNA insertional and antisense knockout of AtCOPIA4 was found to reduce the resistance of wild type plants by 2-4 folds. Our results suggest that retrotransposon can be exapted to participate in plant defense response
Target recognitions in multiple camera CCTV using colour constancy
People tracking using colour feature in crowded scene through CCTV network have been a popular and at the same time a very difficult topic in computer vision. It is mainly because of the difficulty for the acquisition of intrinsic signatures of targets from a single view of the scene. Many factors, such as variable illumination conditions and viewing angles, will induce illusive modification of intrinsic signatures of targets. The objective of this paper is to verify if colour constancy (CC) approach really helps people tracking in CCTV network system. We have testified a number of CC algorithms together with various colour descriptors, to assess the efficiencies of people recognitions from real multi-camera i-LIDS data set via Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC). It is found that when CC is applied together with some form of colour restoration mechanisms such as colour transfer, the recognition performance can be improved by at least a factor of two. An elementary luminance based CC coupled with a pixel based colour transfer algorithm, together with experimental results are reported in the present paper

Operational quasiprobabilities for qudits
We propose an operational quasiprobability function for qudits, enabling a
comparison between quantum and hidden-variable theories. We show that the
quasiprobability function becomes positive semidefinite if consecutive
measurement results are described by a hidden-variable model with locality and
noninvasive measurability assumed. Otherwise, it is negative valued. The
negativity depends on the observables to be measured as well as a given state,
as the quasiprobability function is operationally defined. We also propose a
marginal quasiprobability function and show that it plays the role of an
entanglement witness for two qudits. In addition, we discuss an optical
experiment of a polarization qubit to demonstrate its nonclassicality in terms
of the quasiprobability function.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, journal versio
