Exploring Risk Factors for Major Depressive Disorder for Female Patients Aged 18 or Older Living in Ocean County, New Jersey

    Get PDF
Background: The incidence and prevalence of major depressive disorder has been increasing worldwide, in the United States of America, and on a local level. The population of Ocean County, New Jersey, a predominantly Caucasian, female, middle-aged population, may be at increased risk of developing major depressive disorder. Purpose: To explore the social determinants of health and risk factors for major depressive disorder for female patients aged 18 or older living in Ocean County, New Jersey. Methods: This literature review mainly used PubMed and Scopus for journal articles and utilized governmental databases for additional population data. Results: Analyses conducted on social determinants of health revealed that access to healthcare and attaining higher education were protective factors. Overall, being female, middle-aged, developing comorbid substance use (alcohol or drug use), and being socially isolated were associated with increased risk of developing major depressive disorder. The COVID-19 pandemic has been observed to worsen incidence of major depressive disorder. Conclusion: This research has shown that social determinants of health and risk factors impact the incidence of major depressive disorder in Ocean County, New Jersey. Further research will need to be conducted to further stratify risk in additional counties

Diels -Alder reactions between fullerene[60] and various pentacenes

    Get PDF
The reaction of fullerene[60] with pentacene and various 6,13-disubstituted pentacenes has been studied and the formation of cis-bisfullerene[60] adducts has been achieved. The reaction of fullerene[60] with pentacene was studied with the goal of preparing cis-1 and trans-2 bisfullerene[60] adducts. Instead, the solution phase Diels-Alder reaction between fullerene[60] and pentacene yields a C 2v symmetric monoadduct, 3, in 59% yield.*. Semi-empirical PM3 calculations suggest that fullerene[60] should react favorably with 6,13-disubstituted pentacenes such that molecules similar to 1 and 2 would form. Several 6,13-disubstituted pentacenes were synthesized and subsequently reacted with fullerene[60] resulting in the formation of various cis-bisfullerene[60] adducts in high yield. The reactions are completely regioselective, cycloadditions occurring exclusively across the 5,14- and 7,12-positions of the pentacene backbone, and highly cis-stereoselective as well. The corresponding trans-bisfullerene[60] adducts are not detected above trace levels. The reactions proceed through the formation of CS symmetric monoadducts, some of which form in high yield and are easily isolated. 6,13-Diethynyl substituted pentacenes are especially prone to CS monoadduct formation in good yield. NMR spectroscopy in conjunction with mass spectrometry and X-ray structure analysis has enabled a thorough characterization of the products.*. A combination of experimental data, model compound studies, and computational results suggest that favorable pi-stacking interactions between fullerene[60] moieties in the ground state and in transition states are responsible for the high cis-stereoselectivities observed in these reactions whether they be run under kinetically controlled or thermodynamically controlled conditions. Electrochemistry of two bisfullerene[60] adducts has been studied. Separate I electron reductions for each fullerene[60] moiety on one of the bisfullerene[60] adducts, are resolved at low negative potential. Bisfullerene[60] adducts are also susceptible to chemical reductions and reactions with Zn dust in 2 different solvents have been studied

An Aggressive, Arrogant, and Argumentative Society: A Biblical Perspective from African American Pastors of Carolina Low Country

In a nation mired in racial violence, how can African American churches reach the divided communities with the love of Jesus Christ? What methods can African American pastors use to enlighten their communities and seek racial unity within the greater community? How can African American pastors share this single truth with their communities: As long as America is divided by racial bigotry, economic disparity, and cultural indifference, every citizen is injured, and our nation is bound to fail. Although similar questions are asked nationwide, this thesis focuses on the perspectives of African American pastors and their churches from the Gullah culture in the lower Carolinas. As descendants of enslaved Africans, Low Country Christians are the standard-bearers of a culture that has preserved much of the African linguistic and cultural heritage of various peoples and absorbed new influences from other regions. Coming from this unique culture—one born in violence and diversity—Low Country African American pastors are ideally suited to address America’s racial divide and help the country realize the Founders’ promise that “all men are created equal.” Through their unique pastoral style of preaching and teaching their congregations with love, honesty, and good temperament, Low Country pastors are both culturally and biblically equipped to share the good news of Christ and help unify our nation. Supported by quantitative and qualitative analysis, this thesis provides a unique model of “brotherly love” in Jesus Christ, grounded in biblical exegesis and Low Country Gullah culture

Toxic Cyanobacteria Aerosols: Tests of Filters for Cells

    Get PDF
Aerosolization of toxic cyanobacteria released from the surface of lakes is a new area of study that could uncover a previously unknown route of exposure to toxic cyanobacteria. Since toxic cyanobacteria may be responsible for adverse human health effects, methods and equipment need to be tested and established for monitoring these airborne bacteria. The primary focus of this study was to create controlled laboratory experiments that simulate natural lake aerosol production. I set out to test for the best type of filter to collect and analyze the aerosolized cells as small as 0.2-2.0 µm, known as picoplankton. To collect these aerosols, air was vacuumed from just above a sample of lake water passing through either glass fiber filters (GFF) or 0.22 µm MF-Millipore™ membrane filters (0.22 Millipore™). Filter collections were analyzed through epiflourescence microscopy for determining cell counts. Data analysis revealed that 0.22 Millipore™ filters were the best option for cell enumeration providing better epiflourescence optical quality and higher cell counts

STEM technologies have the ability to spread information to those corners of the world where Internet access has yet to reach. However, there are very few technologies that can bring this necessity to developing countries, most of which do not have the capital to pursue these technologies. In this paper, we discuss Beacon Pack, a solar powered database in a travelers pack that can bring information acquired from the Internet to these individuals in developing countries with low-level cellular phones or feature phones. Our product tackles this issue of providing this info, specifically news articles, to developing countries through an existing cellular signal. Beacon Pack connects to any cell signal and can thus provide educational content to surrounding individuals through SMS text, one of the few communication tools that most third world citizens have access to today. We found that this project is not only incredibly beneficial, but it is also pragmatic in its approach to bridging the information gap. Through simple coding techniques, our team was able to establish this technology to support multiple users at a cost of $150 per pack. Each pack, when connected to a single cellular service signal, can supply thousands of users with information in the area, making this project highly cost efficient. Consequently, we plan for this device to be expanded into outside countries by a San Jose based non-profit, Community Technology Alliance. Through their efforts, more teams of engineers will be able to further implement Beacon Pack to include several different types of educational tools for users, all of which will be SMS text enabled
