    A study of Attachment Disorders of young offenders attending specialist services

    Attachment disorders, specifically Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder (DSED) are disorders associated with neglect and abuse in which people have significant difficulties relating to others. This study aims to explore Attachment Disorder symptoms and diagnoses in young offenders and factors that may be associated with them such as mental health problems. A cross-sectional design was used with 29 young people who were known to Intensive Services, aged 12–17 (M = 16.2, SD = 1.3), 29 carers and 20 teachers. They completed measures investigating symptoms of Attachment Disorders and psychopathology. Eighty-six percent of the young people had experienced some form of maltreatment and the rates of an actual or borderline Attachment Disorder was 52%. A positive correlation between Attachment Disorder symptoms and other mental health problems (as rated by carer-report Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire Total Difficulties Score), accounting for 36% of the variance was found, with a large effect size (rs = 0.60). Attachment Disorder symptoms were associated with hyperactivity and peer relationship problems

    Mothers' perceptions of overweight and obesity in their children

    Background: Childhood obesity is a growing health concern and the literature implicates parents, particularly mothers. Aim: To develop understandings into the views of a group of mothers with an overweight or obese child, about their child's overweight or obesity. Method: A qualitative design informed by feminist insights. Eleven English speaking mothers of at least one overweight or obese child were drawn from a large urban community in metropolitan Australia to participate in this study. Results: Participants attributed their child's obesity to factors such as slow metabolism, sedentary lifestyle, familial or cultural factors, genetics, eating habits such as not drinking enough water, or not chewing food adequately. Participants were very concerned about their child's weight problems and their immediate concerns focussed on social problems associated with obesity/overweight. Conclusion: Understanding parental views about their children's overweight and obesity is a key step in forming effective liaisons between health professionals and parents

    Error analysis and calibration for a novel pipe profiling tool

    Integrity of industrial pipework is ensured through routine inspection. Internal visual inspection tools are capable of characterising degradation in the form of corrosion, pitting, erosion and cracking. The accuracy of such inspection systems has a direct impact on decisions regarding the remaining lifetime of the asset. By minimising error margins, the asset may be operated with confidence for longer, with less uncertainty. This paper considers a probe system consisting of a laser profiler and camera that produces a textured 3D model of the internals of 2 – 6 inch pipework. The accuracy of the system is defined by the ability to extract laser projections from an image as it travels down the pipe, to accurately reconstruct these projections into 3D and to estimate the probe trajectory as it travels through the pipe. This paper presents an error model of the laser profiler. It then presents a novel calibration routine to reduce the error caused by misalignment and tolerances during fabrication of the system. A key advantage of the proposed calibration technique over alternatives is that we can calibrate for errors without manually adjusting the probe, which enables fabrication of a smaller more robust measurement system. In lab-based trials our calibration technique reduced peak sizing errors from 2.7mm to 0.14mm in 120mm diameter pipes

    Spatiotemporal dispersion and wave envelopes with relativistic and pseudorelativistic characteristics

    A generic nonparaxial model for pulse envelopes is presented. Classic Schro¨dinger-type descriptions of wave propagation have their origins in slowly-varying envelopes combined with a Galilean boost to the local time frame. By abandoning these two simplifications, a picture of pulse evolution emerges in which frame-of-reference considerations and space-time transformations take center stage. A wide range of effects, analogous to those in special relativity, then follows for both linear and nonlinear systems. Explicit demonstration is presented through exact bright and dark soliton pulse solutions

    Controlling Restricted Random Testing: An Examination of the Exclusion Ratio Parameter

    In Restricted Random Testing (RRT), the main control parameter is the Target Exclusion Ratio (R), the proportion of the input domain to be excluded from test case generation at each iteration. Empirical investigations have consistently indicated that best failure-finding performance is achieved when the value for the Target Exclusion Ratio is maximised, i.e. close to 100%. This paper explains an algorithm to calculate the Actual Exclusion Ratio for RRT, and applies the algorithm to several simulations, confirming that previous empirically determined values for the Maximum Target Exclusion Ratio do give Actual Exclusion Ratios close to 100%. Previously observed trends of improvement in failure-finding efficiency of RRT corresponding to increases in Target Exclusion Ratios are also identified for Actual Exclusion Ratios.published_or_final_versio

    Analysis of clogging in constructed wetlands using magnetic resonance

    In this work we demonstrate the potential of permanent magnet based magnetic resonance sensors to monitor and assess the extent of pore clogging in water filtration systems. The performance of the sensor was tested on artificially clogged gravel substrates and on gravel bed samples from constructed wetlands used to treat wastewater. Data indicate that the spin lattice relaxation time is linearly related to the hydraulic conductivity in such systems. In addition, within biologically active filters we demonstrate the ability to determine the relative ratio of biomass to abiotic solids, a measurement which is not possible using alternative techniques
