Genital tract involvements in a bull affected by bovine besnoitiosis
Objective
To describe the gross and histopathological testicular lesions observed in a 14-months.old
Limousine bull, imported from France and referred for thickening of the skin and enlargement
of the testis and finally diagnosed as affected by Besnoitiosis. The diagnosis was confirmed by
histological investigation of skin sampled via biopsy.
Materials and Methods
Gross examination and histological investigation were carried out on the reproductive tract of the bull
sampled during slaughtering. The considered parts were skin of the scrotum, testis, testicular coverings,
epididymis, penis, and penis retractor muscle.
These tissue were fixed in 10% buffered formalin, embedded in paraffin wax, and processed for histological
investigation.
Results
Gross examination showed: thickening and lichenification of the scrotal skin (a), visible cysts at the level of
the testicular coverings (b), preputial mucosa (c), hyperemia of the right testis (d).
The main microscopical finding was the presence of several Besnoitia. spp cysts in the skin and subcutaneous
tissue of the scrotum, in the testicular coverings as well as in the testicular tubules (e), and epididymis. (f)
The Besnoitia spp. cysts ranged in size from 250 to 300 μm in diameter. They had a 10-20 μm thick wall with
three layers: an outer hyaline layer, a middle layer with host cells cytoplasm and nuclei, and an inner
membrane with the parasitophorous vacuole containing typical 7.0×2.0 μm basophilic banana-shaped
Besnoitia spp. Bradyzoites.
Plasmocytic and histiocytic inflammatory reaction, with sparse eosinophilic granulocytes infiltration were
observed around some broken cysts.
Numerous Besnoitia spp. cysts were also observed in the cross section of the penis (g) and the penis retractor
muscle (h). A moderate inflammatory response, composed by macrophages, eosinophils and scattered
lymphocytes, was seen near and around the cysts.
Discussion and conclusions
The presence of cysts and its secondary inflammatory reactions may explain the impaired fertility that has
been already described in the case of Besnoitiosis. Potential explanations may be:
• interference with normal spermatogenesis by the cysts in the interstitial spaces and under the epithelial
cells in the seminiferous tubules;
• direct pressure on the germinal epithelial cells by the cysts that can cause pressure atrophy of epididymal
and/or testicular tissues;
• reduction of the blood flow, local testicular necrosis and development of fibrotic foci due to the
inflammation caused by the cysts in the blood vessel walls of the testis and pampiniform plexus, with
repercussion on the seminiferous tubule health;
• abnormal thermoregulation of the testis due to the thickened scrotum;
• abnormal thermoregulation of the testis due to vascular lesions in pampiniform plexus provokiong
testicular degeneration;
• tissutal fibrosis due to the inflammatory reaction to the presence of the cysts
Effects of age-related cognitive deficits on EEG phase coherence
Body and brain undergo several changes with aging. One of these changes is the loss of neuroplasticity, which leads to the decrease of cognitive abilities. Hence the necessity of stopping or reversing these changes is of utmost importance to contemporary society. In the present work, electroencephalogram (EEG) markers of cognitive decline are sought whilst the subjects perform the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Considering the expected age-related cognitive deficits, WCST was applied to young and elder participants. The results suggest that coherence on theta and alpha EEG rhythms decrease with aging and increase with performance. Additionally, theta phase coherence seems more sensitive to performance, while alpha synchronization appears as a potential ageing markerFCT-Foundation for Science and Technology and Compete Program with the project reference FCOMP-01-0124-FED ER-021145 (PTDC/SAU-ENB/118383/2010
A De Novo Mutation in COL1A1 in a Holstein Calf with Osteogenesis Imperfecta Type II
Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) type II is a genetic connective tissue disorder characterized by bone fragility, severe skeletal deformities and shortened limbs. OI usually causes perinatal death of affected individuals. OI type II diagnosis in humans is established by the identification of heterozygous mutations in genes coding for collagens. The purpose of this study was to characterize the pathological phenotype of an OI type II-affected neonatal Holstein calf and to identify the causative genetic variant by whole-genome sequencing (WGS). The calf had acute as well as intrauterine fractures, abnormally shaped long bones and localized arthrogryposis. Genetic analysis revealed a private heterozygous missense variant in COL1A1 (c.3917T>A) located in the fibrillar collagen NC1 domain (p.Val1306Glu) that most likely occurred de novo. This confirmed the diagnosis of OI type II and represents the first report of a pathogenic variant in the fibrillar collagen NC domain of COL1A1 associated to OI type II in domestic animals. Furthermore, this study highlights the utility of WGS-based precise diagnostics for understanding congenital disorders in cattle and the need for continued surveillance for rare lethal genetic disorders in cattle
Modelado 3D de la muralla de la Macarena (Sevilla). Propuesta metodológica para su integración en trabajos de gestión cartográfica digital
[EN] Conservation studies of an architectural asset constitute a solid support for future interventions. In particular, Digital Cartographic Management advocates the use of simplified models that allow different levels of definition to be achieved, depending on the desired architectural scale. Based on previous studies in which four levels of definition have been achieved, the aim is to define a fifth level from a 3D model. For this purpose, the Macarena Wall (Seville) is proposed as a case study. In this work, a photogrammetric survey of a section of the sector of this medieval wall is carried out, from which the entities that will form part of a fifth level of definition are identified.[ES] Los estudios de conservación sobre un bien arquitectónico constituyen un soporte sólido para futuras intervenciones. The powder x-ray diffraction data confirms the hexagonal structure of NaGdF4:Ln(3+) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy shows the formation of rod shaped NaGdF4:Ln(3+) (similar to 20 nm) and ovoid shaped Fe3O4/gamma-Fe2O3@NaGdF4:Ln(3+) (similar to 15 nm) nanoparticles. The magnetic hysteresis at 300 K for beta-NaGdF4:Ln(3+) demonstrates paramagnetic features, whereas iron-oxide@beta-NaGdF4:Ln(3+) exhibits superparamagnetic behavior along with a linear component at large applied field due to paramagnetic NaGdF4 matrix. Both nanoparticle samples provide an excellent green emitting [(H-2(11/ 2), S-4(3/2))-> I-4(15/2) (similar to 540 nm)] upconversion luminescence emission under excitation at 980 nm. The energy migration between Yb and Er in NaGdF4 matrix has been explored from 300-800 nm. Intensity variation of blue, green and red lines and the observed luminescence quenching due to the presence of Fe3O4/gamma-Fe2O3 in the composite has been proposed. Swarm hybrid optimization for a piecewise model fitting applied to a glucose model
[EN] Purpose ¿ The purpose of this paper is to study insulin pump therapy and accurate monitoring of glucose
levels in diabetic patients, which are current research trends in diabetology. Both problems have a wide
margin for improvement and promising applications in the control of parameters and levels involved.
Design/methodology/approach ¿ The authors have registered data for the levels of glucose in diabetic
patients throughout a day with a temporal resolution of 5 minutes, the amount and time of insulin
administered and time of ingestion. The estimated quantity of carbohydrates is also monitored. A
mathematical model for Type 1 patients was fitted piecewise to these data and the evolution of the parameters
was analyzed.
Findings ¿ They have found that the parameters for the model change abruptly throughout a day for the
same patient, but this set of parameters account with precision for the evolution of the glucose levels in the
test patients. This fitting technique could be used to personalize treatments for specific patients and predict
the glucose-level variations in terms of hours or even shorter periods of time. This way more effective insulin
pump therapies could be developed.
Originality/value ¿ The proposed model could allow for the development of improved schedules on
insulin pump therapiesAcedo Rodríguez, L.; Botella, M.; Cortés, J.; Hidalgo, J.; Maqueda, E.; Villanueva Micó, RJ. (2018).
