Specifically, the study explores SCM practices, and the barriers to managing supply chain, as well as the impact of SCM socialization practices, inter-organizational communication practices, and information technology applications on buyer-supplier relationships. China is a major player in the global T&A industry, however to the researchers\u27 best knowledge, no empirical research has been done on global SCM issues from the perspective of professionals in the Chinese T&A industry.     Evolution of Planetary Systems in Resonance

    We study the time evolution of two protoplanets still embedded in a protoplanetary disk. The results of two different numerical approaches are presented and compared. In the first approach, the motion of the disk material is computed with viscous hydrodynamical simulations, and the planetary motion is determined by N-body calculations including exactly the gravitational forces exerted by the disk material. In the second approach, only the N-body integration is performed but with additional dissipative forces included such as to mimic the effect of the disk torques acting on the disk. This type of modeling is much faster than the full hydrodynamical simulations, and gives comparative results provided that parameters are adjusted properly. Resonant capture of the planets is seen in both approaches, where the order of the resonance depends on the properties of the disk and the planets. Resonant capture leads to a rise in the eccentricity and to an alignment of the spatial orientation of orbits. The numerical results are compared with the observed planetary systems in mean motion resonance (Gl 867, HD 82943, and 55 Cnc). We find that the forcing together of two planets by their parent disk produces resonant configurations similar to those observed, but that eccentricity damping greater than that obtained in our hydrodynamic simulations is required to match the GJ 876 observations.Comment: Latex, 14 pages, 13 figures, A&A accepte

    Warming Reduces Tall Fescue Abundance but Stimulates Toxic Alkaloid Concentrations in Transition Zone Pastures of the U.S.

    Tall fescue pastures cover extensive acreage in the eastern half of the United States and contribute to important ecosystem services, including the provisioning of forage for grazing livestock. Yet little is known concerning how these pastures will respond to climate change. Tall fescue\u27s ability to persist and provide forage under a warmer and wetter environment, as is predicted for much of this region as a result of climate change, will likely depend on a symbiotic relationship the plant can form with the fungal endophyte, Epichloë coenophiala. While this symbiosis can confer environmental stress tolerance to the plant, the endophyte also produces alkaloids toxic to insects (e.g., lolines) and mammals (ergots; which can cause fescue toxicosis in grazing animals). The negative animal health and economic consequences of fescue toxicosis make understanding the response of the tall fescue symbiosis to climate change critical for the region. We experimentally increased temperature (+3°C) and growing season precipitation (+30% of the long-term mean) from 2009-2013 in a mixed species pasture, that included a tall fescue population that was 40% endophyte-infected. Warming reduced the relative abundance of tall fescue within the plant community, and additional precipitation did not ameliorate this effect. Warming did not alter the incidence of endophyte infection within the tall fescue population; however, warming significantly increased concentrations of ergot alkaloids (by 30-40%) in fall-harvested endophyte-infected individuals. Warming alone did not affect loline alkaloid concentrations, but when combined with additional precipitation, levels increased in fall-harvested material. Although future warming may reduce the dominance of tall fescue in eastern U.S. pastures and have limited effect on the incidence of endophyte infection, persisting endophyte-infected tall fescue will have higher concentrations of toxic alkaloids which may exacerbate fescue toxicosis

    Myosin II Activity Facilitates Microtubule Bundling in the Neuronal Growth Cone Neck

    SummaryThe cell biological processes underlying axon growth and guidance are still not well understood. An outstanding question is how a new segment of the axon shaft is formed in the wake of neuronal growth cone advance. For this to occur, the highly dynamic, splayed-out microtubule (MT) arrays characteristic of the growth cone must be consolidated (bundled together) to form the core of the axon shaft. MT-associated proteins stabilize bundled MTs, but how individual MTs are brought together for initial bundling is unknown. Here, we show that laterally moving actin arcs, which are myosin II-driven contractile structures, interact with growing MTs and transport them from the sides of the growth cone into the central domain. Upon Myosin II inhibition, the movement of actin filaments and MTs immediately stopped and MTs unbundled. Thus, Myosin II-dependent compressive force is necessary for normal MT bundling in the growth cone neck

    Lignin biomarkers as tracers of mercury sources in lakes water column

    This study presents the role of specific terrigenous organic compounds as important vectors of mercury (Hg) transported from watersheds to lakes of the Canadian boreal forest. In order to differentiate the autochthonous from the allochthonous organic matter (OM), lignin derived biomarker signatures [Lambda, S/V, C/V, P/(V ? S), 3,5-Bd/V and (Ad/Al)v] were used. Since lignin is exclusively produced by terrigenous plants, this approach can give a non equivocal picture of the watershed inputs to the lakes. Moreover, it allows a characterization of the source of OM and its state of degradation. The water column of six lakes from the Canadian Shield was sampled monthly between June and September 2005. Lake total dissolved Hg concentrations and Lambda were positively correlated, meaning that Hg and ligneous inputs are linked (dissolved OM r2 = 0.62, p\0.0001; particulate OM r2 = 0.76, p\0.0001). Ratios of P/(V ? S) and 3,5-Bd/V from both dissolved OM and particulate OM of the water column suggest an inverse relationship between the progressive state of pedogenesis and maturation of the OM in soil before entering the lake, and the Hg concentrations in the water column. No relation was found between Hg levels in the lakes and the watershed flora composition—angiosperm versus gymnosperm or woody versus non-woody compounds. This study has significant implications for watershed management of ecosystems since limiting fresh terrestrial OM inputs should reduce Hg inputs to the aquatic systems. This is particularly the case for largescale land-use impacts, such as deforestation, agriculture and urbanization, associated to large quantities of soil OM being transferred to aquatic systems

    Planetary Migration and Extrasolar Planets in the 2/1 Mean-Motion Resonance

    We analyze the possible relationship between the current orbital elements fits of known exoplanets in the 2/1 mean-motion resonance and the expected orbital configuration due to migration. It is found that, as long as the orbital decay was sufficiently slow to be approximated by an adiabatic process, all captured planets should be in apsidal corotations. In other words, they should show a simultaneous libration of both the resonant angle and the difference in longitudes of pericenter. We present a complete set of corotational solutions for the 2/1 commensurability, including previously known solutions and new results. Comparisons with observed exoplanets show that current orbital fits of three known planetary systems in this resonance are either consistent with apsidal corotations (GJ876 and HD82943) or correspond to bodies with uncertain orbits (HD160691). Finally, we discuss the applicability of these results as a test for the planetary migration hypothesis itself. If all future systems in this commensurability are found to be consistent with corotational solutions, then resonance capture of these bodies through planetary migration is a working hypothesis. Conversely, If any planetary pair is found in a different configuration, then either migration did not occur for those bodies, or it took a different form than currently believed.Comment: Submitted to MNRA

    Kepler Eclipsing Binary Stars. VI. Identification of Eclipsing Binaries in the K2 Campaign 0 Data-set

    The original {\it Kepler} mission observed and characterized over 2400 eclipsing binaries in addition to its prolific exoplanet detections. Despite the mechanical malfunction and subsequent non-recovery of two reaction wheels used to stabilize the instrument, the {\it Kepler} satellite continues collecting data in its repurposed {\it K2} mission surveying a series of fields along the ecliptic plane. Here we present an analysis of the first full baseline {\it K2} data release: the Campaign 0 data-set. In the 7761 light curves, we have identified a total of 207 eclipsing binaries. Of these, 97 are new discoveries that were not previously identified. Our pixel-level analysis of these objects has also resulted in identification of several false positives (observed targets contaminated by neighboring eclipsing binaries), as well as the serendipitous discovery of two short period exoplanet candidates. We provide catalog cross-matched source identifications, orbital periods, morphologies and ephemerides for these eclipsing systems. We also describe the incorporation of the K2 sample into the Kepler Eclipsing Binary Catalog\footnote{\url{keplerebs.villanova.edu/k2}}, present spectroscopic follow-up observations for a limited selection of nine systems, and discuss prospects for upcoming {\it K2} campaigns.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 51 pages [20 figures, 8 tables].     RSAT™ process development for post-combustion CO2 capture: Scale-up from laboratory and pilot test data to commercial process design

    AbstractIt is believed that a RSAT™ (Regenerable Solvent Absorption Technology) process is the most viable nearterm technology for post-combustion CO2 capture from power plant flue gas. The Babcock & Wilcox Power Generation Group, Inc. (B&W) has deployed a suite of research tools to evaluate and develop the CO2 scrubbing technology, including laboratory, pilot-scale, and simulation modeling capabilities. Since the construction and operation of test facilities require significant resources, it is essential to effectively utilize these research tools by choosing a scale-up approach which provides robust design data for a commercial process while minimizing the amount of experimentation required.The scale-up protocol used for RSAT CO2 scrubbing processes was rigorously developed using rate-based modeling concurrent with acquiring fundamental laboratory and pilot plant data for process validation. These development activities were not conducted in series but rather overlapped to yield an optimized commercial CO2 scrubbing process in a reasonable time frame with a high degree of design confidence [1,2].This paper presents the scale-up protocol used in evaluating the RSAT process which encompasses both laboratory and pilot-scale testing as well as rate-based modeling to achieve a commercial-scale RSAT process design. This document demonstrates the qualification of test data from a packed tower scale-up point of view. Solvent screening research activities recently conducted within B&W successfully demonstrate the scale-up protocol used for RSAT process development. The time and cost of process development can be significantly reduced through rigorous rate-based modeling in conjunction with laboratory experiments and pilot plant validation
