Master Formula for Twist-3 Soft-Gluon-Pole Mechanism to Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry

    Get PDF
Perturbative QCD relates the single transverse-spin asymmetries (SSAs) for hard processes at large transverse-momentum of produced particle to partonic matrix elements that describe interference between scattering from a coherent quark-gluon pair and from a single quark, generated through twist-3 quark-gluon correlations inside a hadron. When the coherent gluon is soft at the gluonic poles, its coupling to partonic subprocess can be systematically disentangled, so that the relevant interfering amplitude can be derived entirely from the Born diagrams for the scattering from a single quark. We establish a new formula that represents the exact rules to derive the SSA due to soft-gluon poles from the knowledge of the twist-2 cross section formula for unpolarized processes. This single master formula is applicable to a range of processes like Drell-Yan and direct-photon production, and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, and is also useful to manifest the gauge invariance of the results.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures; [v2] a paragraph with new Eq. Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering processes from small to large P_T

We consider the azimuthal and PTP_T dependence of hadrons produced in unpolarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) processes, within the factorized QCD parton model. It is shown that at small PTP_T values, P_T \lsim 1 GeV/c, lowest order contributions, coupled to unintegrated (Transverse Momentum Dependent) quark distribution and fragmentation functions, describe all data. At larger PTP_T values, P_T \gsim 1 GeV/c, the usual pQCD higher order collinear contributions dominate. Having explained the full PTP_T range of available data, we give new detailed predictions concerning the azimuthal and PTP_T dependence of hadrons which could be measured in ongoing or planned experiments by HERMES, COMPASS and JLab collaborations.Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures, uses revtex

Single Transverse Spin Asymmetry for Large-p_T Pion Production in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the single spin asymmetry (SSA) for the pion production with large transverse momentum p_T in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering epeπXep^\uparrow\to e\pi X. We derive the twist-3 cross section formula for SSA, focussing on the soft-gluon-pole contributions associated with the twist-3 distribution for the nucleon and with the twist-3 fragmentation function for the pion. We present a simple estimate of the asymmetries due to each twist-3 effect from nucleon and pion, respectively, by fixing the overall strength of the relevant nonperturbative quantities by the data on the SSA A_N in ppπXp^\uparrow p\to\pi X collision.Comment: 19 pages in LaTex. Twist-3 Formalism for Single Transverse Spin Asymmetry Reexamined: Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

We study the single spin asymmetry (SSA) for the pion production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, epeπXep^\uparrow\to e\pi X, in the framework of the collinear factorization. We derive the complete cross section formula associated with the twist-3 quark-gluon correlation functions for the transversely polarized nucleon, including all types of pole (hard-pole, soft-fermion-pole and soft-gluon-pole) contributions which produce the strong interaction phase necessary for SSA. We prove that the partonic hard part from each pole contribution satisfies certain constraints from Ward identities for color gauge invariance. We demonstrate that the use of these new constraints is crucial to reorganize the collinear expansion of the Feynman diagrams into manifestly gauge-invariant form so as to obtain the factorization formula for the cross section in terms of a complete set of the twist-3 distributions without any double counting. It also provides a simpler method for the actual calculation. We also present a simple estimate of SSA based on our cross section formula, using a model for the ``soft-gluon-pole function'' that represents the relevant twist-3 quark-gluon correlation, and compare the magnitude of the terms involving the derivative of the soft-gluon-pole function with that of the ``non-derivative'' terms.Comment: 38 pages, 11 figures. We observed the ultra-compact binary candidate 4U 0614+091 for a total of 200 ksec with the high-energy transmission gratings onboard the \chandra X-ray Observatory. The source is found at various intensity levels with spectral variations present. X-ray luminosities vary between 2.0×1036\times10^{36} \ergsec and 3.5×1036\times10^{36} \ergsec. Continuum variations are present at all times and spectra can be well fit with a powerlaw component, a high kT blackbody component, and a broad line component near oxygen. The spectra require adjustments to the Ne K edge and in some occasions also to the Mg K edge. The Ne K edge appears variable in terms of optical depths and morphology. The edge reveals average blue- and red-shifted values implying Doppler velocities of the order of 3500 \kms. The data show that Ne K exhibits excess column densities of up to several 1018^{18} cm2^{-2}. The variability proves that the excess is intrinsic to the source. The correponding disk velocities also imply an outer disk radius of the order of <109< 10^9 cm consistent with an ultra-compact binary nature. We also detect a prominent soft emission line complex near the \oviii Lα\alpha position which appears extremely broad and relativistic effects from near the innermost disk have to be included. Gravitationally broadened line fits also provide nearly edge-on angles of inclination between 86 and 89^{\circ}. The emissions appear consistent with an ionized disk with ionization parameters of the order of 104^4 at radii of a few 107^7 cm. The line wavelengths with respect to \oviiia\ are found variably blue-shifted indicating more complex inner disk dynamics.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the Astrophyscial Main Journa

Resummation for Polarized Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering at Small Transverse Momentum

We study the transverse-momentum distribution of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS). We consider cross sections for various combinations of polarizations of the initial lepton and nucleon or the produced hadron, for which we perform the resummation of large double-logarithmic perturbative corrections arising at small transverse momentum. We present phenomenological results for the processes lplπXlp\to l\pi X with longitudinally polarized leptons and protons. We discuss the impact of the perturbative resummation and of estimated non-perturbative contributions on the corresponding cross sections and their spin asymmetry. Our results should be relevant for ongoing studies in the COMPASS experiment at CERN, and for future experiments at the proposed eRHIC collider at BNL.Comment: LateX 26 pages. Post-translational regulation of retinal IMPDH1 in vivo to adjust GTP synthesis to illumination conditions

    Get PDF
We report the in vivo regulation of Inosine-5'-monophosphate dehydrogenase 1 (IMPDH1) in the retina. IMPDH1 catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the de novo synthesis of guanine nucleotides, impacting the cellular pools of GMP, GDP and GTP. Guanine nucleotide homeostasis is central to photoreceptor cells, where cGMP is the signal transducing molecule in the light response. Mutations in IMPDH1 lead to inherited blindness. We unveil a light-dependent phosphorylation of retinal IMPDH1 at Thr159/Ser160 in the Bateman domain that desensitizes the enzyme to allosteric inhibition by GDP/GTP. When exposed to bright light, living mice increase the rate of GTP and ATP synthesis in their retinas; concomitant with IMPDH1 aggregate formation at the outer segment layer. Inhibiting IMPDH activity in living mice delays rod mass recovery. We unveil a novel mechanism of regulation of IMPDH1 in vivo, important for understanding GTP homeostasis in the retina and the pathogenesis of adRP10 IMPDH1 mutations

Tailoring porous structure of ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) by controlling solvent/polymer ratio and solvent evaporation rate

Ferroelectric macroporous poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) membranes have been produced by isothermal crystallization from the solution at different temperatures starting from different diluted solutions of the co-polymer in dimethylformamide. In this way pore architecture, consisting in interconnected spherical pores can be obtained. The mechanism and kinetics of solvent evaporation was investigated and related to the evolution of the polymer microstructure. The mechanism underlying the pattern formation has been discussed on the light of the Flory-Huggins (FH) lattice theory, grain boundary effects and the Cahn-Hilliard equation for mass conservation systems. It was also observed that the temperature or initial concentration of the crystallization process does not affect the phase, ferroelectric transition temperature or the melting temperature of the polymer. The authors thank the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) Grants PTDC/CTM-NAN/112574/2009, PTDC/CTM/73030/2006, PTDC/CTM/69316/2006 and NANO/NMed-SD/0156/2007.
