Service quality measurements for IPv6 inter-networks
Measurement-based performance evaluation of
network traffic is becoming very important, especially for
networks trying to provide differentiated levels of service quality to the different application flows. The non-identical response of flows to the different types of network-imposed performance degradation raises the need for ubiquitous measurement mechanisms, able to measure numerous performance properties, and being equally applicable to different applications and transports. This paper presents a new measurement mechanism, facilitated by the steady introduction of IPv6 in network nodes and hosts, which exploits native features of the protocol to provide support for performance measurements at the network (IP) layer. IPv6 Extension Headers have been used to carry the
triggers involving the measurement activity and the
measurement data in-line with the payload data itself, providing a high level of probability that the behaviour of the real user traffic flows is observed. End-to-end one-way delay, jitter, loss, and throughput have been measured for applications operating on top of both reliable and unreliable transports, over different-capacity
IPv6 network configurations. We conclude that this
technique could form the basis for future Internet measurements that can be dynamically deployed where and when required in a multi-service IP environment

Understanding Paramagnetic Spin Correlations in the Spin-Liquid Pyrochlore Tb2Ti2O7
Recent elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies of the highly
frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb2Ti2O7 have shown some very intriguing
features that cannot be modeled by the local classical Ising model,
naively expected to describe this system at low temperatures. Using the random
phase approximation to take into account fluctuations between the ground state
doublet and the first excited doublet, we successfully describe the elastic
neutron scattering pattern and dispersion relations in Tb2Ti2O7,
semi-quantitatively consistent with experimental observations.Comment: revtex4, 4 pages, 1 Color+ 2 BW figure
Efficient chaining of seeds in ordered trees
We consider here the problem of chaining seeds in ordered trees. Seeds are
mappings between two trees Q and T and a chain is a subset of non overlapping
seeds that is consistent with respect to postfix order and ancestrality. This
problem is a natural extension of a similar problem for sequences, and has
applications in computational biology, such as mining a database of RNA
secondary structures. For the chaining problem with a set of m constant size
seeds, we describe an algorithm with complexity O(m2 log(m)) in time and O(m2)
in space
Community vulnerability and resilience in disaster risk reduction: an example from Phojal Nalla, Himachal Pradesh, India.
International Disaster Risk Reduction Frameworks and Indian Plans advocate shared responsibility for reducing disaster risk, in which community vulnerability and resilience conditions are central. This paper presents a case study from the Indian Himalaya (Kullu District) of community vulnerability and resilience conditions following damaging floods, primarily the 1994 Phojal Nalla flood, through the concepts of community heritage and capital.
Data were collected in the period 2013-2016, using semi-structured interviews (n= 129), village reconnaissance and archival/contemporary data searches. The connections between heritage, capital, vulnerability and resilience are complex, but results demonstrate ‘knowledge’ is the principal driver of resilience conditions, via facets of heritage (e.g. religious infrastructure and activities, traditional architectural vernacular, and multi-generational attachments to place) and capital (e.g. income diversification, access to communication technologies, societal welfare measures and positive interactions with water). Persisting vulnerabilities stem from differential access to and implementation of best practice knowledge, governed by social, economic and political conditions. Further improvements in risk reduction require greater consideration of: (1) the integration of community local knowledge into the overall disaster management process; (2) the opportunities offered by mobile phone and other technologies for generating and sharing knowledge across society; (3) the value of under-utilised knowledge of past disaster events, assembled from a systematic evaluation of oral, documentary and landscape evidence, to risk reduction
Electron Spin Resonance Above Tc In Layered Manganites
We have performed electron spin resonance (ESR) and dc magnetization measurements on single crystals of La2(1-x)Sr1+2xMn2O7 up to 800 K with special emphasis on the x = 0.4 composition. The ESR linewidth shows behavior similar to that observed in the three-dimensional perovskites and above ∼500 K can be described by a universal expression ΔHpp(T)=[C/Tχ(T)]ΔHpp (∞). The linewidth and the resonance field become anisotropic below ∼500 K. The anisotropy in the resonance field is proportional to the magnetization M, and we concluded that it is intrinsic to the system. We show that demagnetization effects can explain only part of the anisotropy. The remainder arises from short-range uniaxial terms in the Hamiltonian that are associated with the crystal field and Dzialozhinsky-Moriya interactions. The anisotropy in the linewidth is attributed to the easy-plane ferromagnetic ordering, which also arises from the short-range anisotropy.631717441311744136Ruddlesden, S.N., Popper, P., (1958) Acta Crystallogr., 11, p. 54Moritomo, Y., Asamitsu, A., Kuwahara, H., Tokura, Y., (1996) Nature (London), 380, p. 141Causa, M.T., Tovar, M., Caneiro, A., Prado, F., Ibanez, G., Ramos, C.A., Butera, A., Oseroff, S.B., (1998) Phys. Emotional engagements predict and enhance social cognition in young chimpanzees
Social cognition in infancy is evident in coordinated triadic engagements, that is, infants attending jointly with social partners and objects. Current evolutionary theories of primate social cognition tend to highlight species differences in cognition based on human-unique cooperative motives. We consider a developmental model in which engagement experiences produce differential outcomes. We conducted a 10-year-long study in which two groups of laboratory-raised chimpanzee infants were given quantifiably different engagement experiences. Joint attention, cooperativeness, affect, and different levels of cognition were measured in 5- to 12-month-old chimpanzees, and compared to outcomes derived from a normative human database. We found that joint attention skills significantly improved across development for all infants, but by 12 months, the humans significantly surpassed the chimpanzees. We found that cooperativeness was stable in the humans, but by 12 months, the chimpanzee group given enriched engagement experiences significantly surpassed the humans. Past engagement experiences and concurrent affect were significant unique predictors of both joint attention and cooperativeness in 5- to 12-month-old chimpanzees. When engagement experiences and concurrent affect were statistically controlled, joint attention and cooperation were not associated. We explain differential social cognition outcomes in terms of the significant influences of previous engagement experiences and affect, in addition to cognition. Our study highlights developmental processes that underpin the emergence of social cognition in support of evolutionary continuity
Elastic Tensor of SrRuO
The six independent elastic constants of SrRuO were determined using
resonant ultrasound spectroscopy on a high-quality single-crystal specimen. The
constants are in excellent agreement with those obtained from pulse-echo
experiments performed on a sample cut from the same ingot. A calculation of the
Debye temperature using the measured constants agrees well with values obtained
from both specific heat and M\"{o}ssbauer measurements.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, submitted to PR
Effects of site dilution on the magnetic properties of geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets
The effect of site dilution by non magnetic impurities on the susceptibility
of geometrically frustrated antiferromagnets (kagome and pyrochlore lattices)
is discussed in the framework of the Generalized Constant Coupling model, for
both classical and quantum Heisenberg spins. For the classical diluted
pyrochlore lattice, excellent agreement is found when compared with Monte Carlo
data. Results for the quantum case are also presented and discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
