    Thermal noise properties of two aging materials

    In this lecture we review several aspects of the thermal noise properties in two aging materials: a polymer and a colloidal glass. The measurements have been performed after a quench for the polymer and during the transition from a fluid-like to a solid-like state for the gel. Two kind of noise has been measured: the electrical noise and the mechanical noise. For both materials we have observed that the electric noise is characterized by a strong intermittency, which induces a large violation of the Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem (FDT) during the aging time, and may persist for several hours at low frequency. The statistics of these intermittent signals and their dependance on the quench speed for the polymer or on sample concentration for the gel are studied. The results are in a qualitative agreement with recent models of aging, that predict an intermittent dynamics. For the mechanical noise the results are unclear. In the polymer the mechanical thermal noise is still intermittent whereas for the gel the violation of FDT, if it exists, is extremely small.Comment: to be published in the Proceedings of the XIX Sitges Conference on ''Jammming, Yielding and Irreversible Deformation in Condensed Matter'', M.-C.Miguel and M.     Low frequency Raman studies of multi-wall carbon nanotubes: experiments and theory

    In this paper, we investigate the low frequency Raman spectra of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNT) prepared by the electric arc method. Low frequency Raman modes are unambiguously identified on purified samples thanks to the small internal diameter of the MWNT. We propose a model to describe these modes. They originate from the radial breathing vibrations of the individual walls coupled through the Van der Waals interaction between adjacent concentric walls. The intensity of the modes is described in the framework of bond polarization theory. Using this model and the structural characteristics of the nanotubes obtained from transmission electron microscopy allows to simulate the experimental low frequency Raman spectra with an excellent agreement. It suggests that Raman spectroscopy can be as useful regarding the characterization of MWNT as it is in the case of single-wall nanotubes.Comment: 4 pages, 2 eps fig., 2 jpeg fig., RevTex, submitted to Phys.     Measurement of coherent charge transfer in an adiabatic Cooper pair pump

    We study adiabatic charge transfer in a superconducting Cooper pair pump, focusing on the influence of current measurement on coherence. We investigate the limit where the Josephson coupling energy EJE_J between the various parts of the system is small compared to the Coulomb charging energy ECE_C. In this case the charge transferred in a pumping cycle QP2eQ_P \sim 2e, the charge of one Cooper pair: the main contribution is due to incoherent Cooper pair tunneling. We are particularly interested in the quantum correction to QPQ_P, which is due to coherent tunneling of pairs across the pump and which depends on the superconducting phase difference ϕ0\phi_0 between the electrodes: 1QP/(2e)(EJ/EC)cosϕ01-Q_P/(2e) \sim (E_J/E_C) \cos \phi_0. A measurement of QPQ_P tends to destroy the phase coherence. We first study an arbitrary measuring circuit and then specific examples and show that coherent Cooper pair transfer can in principle be detected using an inductively shunted ammeter

    Tuning the Raman Resonance Behavior of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes via Covalent Functionalization

    We present a systematic Raman study over a range of excitation energies of arc discharge single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) covalently functionalized according to two processes, esterification and reductive alkylation. The SWCNTs are characterized by resonance Raman spectroscopy at each step of the functionalization process, showing changes in radial breathing mode frequencies and transition energies for both semiconducting and metallic tubes. Particular attention is given to a family of tubes clearly identified in the Kataura plot for which we continuously tune the excitation energy from 704 to 752 nm. This allows us to quantify the energy shift occurring in the spacing of the van Hove singularities. We demonstrate that, independently of the functionalization technique, the type of chain covalently bound to the tubes plays an important role, notably when oxygen atoms lie close to the tubes, inducing a larger shift in transition energy as compared to that of other carbonaceous chains. The study shows the complexity of interpreting Raman data and suggests many interpretations in the literature may need to be revisited

    Burden and risk factors for Pseudomonas aeruginosa community-acquired pneumonia:a Multinational Point Prevalence Study of Hospitalised Patients

    Pseudornonas aeruginosa is a challenging bacterium to treat due to its intrinsic resistance to the antibiotics used most frequently in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Data about the global burden and risk factors associated with P. aeruginosa-CAP are limited. We assessed the multinational burden and specific risk factors associated with P. aeruginosa-CAP. We enrolled 3193 patients in 54 countries with confirmed diagnosis of CAP who underwent microbiological testing at admission. Prevalence was calculated according to the identification of P. aeruginosa. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for antibiotic-susceptible and antibiotic-resistant P. aeruginosa-CAP. The prevalence of P. aeruginosa and antibiotic-resistant P. aeruginosa-CAP was 4.2% and 2.0%, respectively. The rate of P. aeruginosa CAP in patients with prior infection/colonisation due to P. aeruginosa and at least one of the three independently associated chronic lung diseases (i.e. tracheostomy, bronchiectasis and/or very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) was 67%. In contrast, the rate of P. aeruginosa-CAP was 2% in patients without prior P. aeruginosa infection/colonisation and none of the selected chronic lung diseases. The multinational prevalence of P. aeruginosa-CAP is low. The risk factors identified in this study may guide healthcare professionals in deciding empirical antibiotic coverage for CAP patients

    A measurement of the Z0 leptonic partial widths and the vector and axial vector coupling constants

    We have measured the partial widths of the Z0 into lepton pairs, and the forward-backward charge asymmetry for the process e+e--->[mu]+[mu]- using the L3 detector at LEP. We obtain an average [Gamma]ll of 83.0+/-2.1+/-1.1 MeV.From this result and the asymmetry measurement, we extract the values of the vector and axial vector couplings of the Z0 to leptons: grmv=-0.066-0.027+0.046 and grmA= -0.495-0.007+0.007.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/28666/3/0000483.pd
