    Modelling coastal erosion and sediment transport on the Dungeness Foreland, UK

    Ageing coastal defence across the UK is challenging managers to redesign schemes to be resilient, cost-effective and have minimal or beneficial environmental impact. We take Dungeness and Romney Marsh, a region of high value in terms of habitat and energy infrastructure, as a case study that could potentially be a site for a ‘sandscaping’ project, i.e. an innovative, large-scale beach recharge scheme. At present, this location has both modified gravel barrier defences and engineered structures. We present results for a feasibility study to improve understanding of how ‘working with natural processes’ to manage coastal flood and erosion risk could provide and support defences protecting this site, ensuring an energy supply that is resilient to climate change. This modelling study investigates the impact of re-engineering the coastline with a series of sandscaping options that mimic the natural shape and former evolution of the Dungeness coastline. Particle tracking is used to show the potential pathways of recharged sediment (fine and medium sand) movement along the coastline in both calm and stormy conditions. A coastal evolution model is also applied to assess the alongshore impact of different intervention designs. It is found that the main sediment drift is likely to be towards the north along the coast and that considering larger interventions could possibly provide increased protection for up to 100 years. Further, a series of three smaller sandscaping interventions offers the greatest immediate reduction in erosion rate. The natural drift within the system causes the initial peninsula-shaped intervention to form a recurve that could potentially create additional areas supporting essential natural habitat within the area

    Well-being vocabulary in media language : An analysis of changing word usage in Norwegian newspapers

    Well-being is a widely discussed topic in research, policy, and media. This study was aimed at examining usage patterns of core terminology related to well-being in Norwegian newspapers during the past two decades. Specifically, we investigated occurrence across time of 39 words describing well-being facets from four theoretical perspectives: affective approaches, cognitive or life satisfaction approaches, eudaimonic and humanistic approaches, and character strengths. Four major newspapers were selected in order to capture sociocultural and regional variation. Evidence of significant changes in usage frequency was detected for about half of the search terms. Affective words showed variable trends, while usage of words referring to satisfaction declined. The most notable magnitude of change concerned the increase in eudaimonic words related to mastery, motivation, and self-development. Findings suggest that core vocabulary of well-being belongs to a changeable field of linguistic practice. Implications for positive psychology are proposed

    What matters most in acute care: an interview study with older people living with frailty

    Background Healthcare outcome goals are central to person-centred acute care, however evidence among older people is scarce. Older people who are living with frailty have distinct requirements for healthcare delivery and have distinct risk for adverse outcomes from healthcare. There is insufficient evidence for whether those living with frailty also have distinct healthcare outcome goals. This study explored the nature of acute care outcome goals in people living with frailty. Methods Healthcare outcome goals were explored using semi-structured patient interviews. Participants aged over 65 with Clinical Frailty Score 5-8 (mild to very severe frailty) were recruited during their first 72 hours in a UK hospital. Purposive, maximum variation sampling was guided by lay partners from a Patient and Public Involvement Forum specialising in ageing-related research. Qualitative analysis used a blended approach based on framework and constant comparative methodologies for the identification of themes. Findings were validated through triangulation with participant, lay partner, and technical expert review. Results The 22 participants were aged 71 to 98 and had mild to very severe frailty. One quarter were living with dementia. Most participants had reflected on their situation and considered their outcome goals. Theme categories (and corresponding sub-categories) were ‘Autonomy’ (information, control, and security) and ‘Functioning’ (physical, psychosocial, and relief). A novel ‘security’ theme was identified, whereby participants sought to feel safe in their usual living place and with their health problems. Those living with milder frailty were concerned to maintain ability to support loved ones, while those living with most severe frailty were concerned about burdening others. Conclusions Outcome goals for acute care among older participants living with frailty were influenced by the insecurity of their situation and fear of deterioration. Patients may be supported to feel safe and in control through appropriate information provision and functional support

    Virtual Reality after Surgery—A Method to Decrease Pain After Surgery in Pediatric Patients

    Background: Virtual Reality (VR) is used as an effective tool for distraction and as an adjunct for pain management. This study was conducted to compare VR to standard iPad use after surgery and examine its effect on pain score and opioid consumption. Methods: This was a randomized controlled study, with stratification by surgery type, age group (7-12yo, 13-18yo) and gender. Pain and anxiety were assessed with validated scales (STAI, FACES, VAS, FLACC) and outcomes were compared between each group. Results: 50 of the 106 enrolled patients used the VR device. After adjusting for age, gender, and STAI, patients had a decreased FLACC score while using the VR device compared to the iPad group (odds ratio 2.95, P =.021). The younger patients were found to have lower FLACC scores while using the VR device (odds ratio 1.15, p=0.044); this finding was most significant when patients used the VR device for 20-30 minutes (odds ratio 1.67, P =.0003). Additionally, after adjusting for treatment group, gender, and STAI, the younger patients had higher odds of withdrawal or exclusion from the study (odds ratio 1.18, P =.021). No significant difference in opioid consumption between the groups was found. Discussion: Virtual reality was well tolerated and more effective in decreasing pain during the immediate postoperative period than iPad use. Despite a slightly higher withdrawal rate, younger patients benefited more from the intervention

    Deep exclusive π+\pi^+ electroproduction off the proton at CLAS

    The exclusive electroproduction of π+\pi^+ above the resonance region was studied using the CEBAF\rm{CEBAF} Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS\rm{CLAS}) at Jefferson Laboratory by scattering a 6 GeV continuous electron beam off a hydrogen target. The large acceptance and good resolution of CLAS\rm{CLAS}, together with the high luminosity, allowed us to measure the cross section for the γ∗p→nπ+\gamma^* p \to n \pi^+ process in 140 (Q2Q^2, xBx_B, tt) bins: 0.16<xB<0.580.16<x_B<0.58, 1.6 GeV2<^2<Q2Q^2<4.5<4.5 GeV2^2 and 0.1 GeV2<^2<−t-t<5.3<5.3 GeV2^2. For most bins, the statistical accuracy is on the order of a few percent. Differential cross sections are compared to two theoretical models, based either on hadronic (Regge phenomenology) or on partonic (handbag diagram) degrees of freedom. Both can describe the gross features of the data reasonably well, but differ strongly in their ingredients. If the handbag approach can be validated in this kinematical region, our data contain the interesting potential to experimentally access transversity Generalized Parton Distributions.Comment: 18pages, 21figures,2table

    Variety of Methodological Approach in Economics

    It has been argued by some that the distinction between orthodox economics and heterodox economics does not fit the growing variety in economic theory, unified by a common methodological approach. On the other hand, it remains a central characteristic of heterodox economics that it does not share this methodological approach, but rather represents a range of alternative methodological approaches. The paper explores the evidence, and arguments, for variety in economics at different levels, and a range of issues which arise. This requires in turn a discussion of the meaning of variety in economics at the different levels of reality, methodology, method and theory. It is concluded that there is scope for more, rather than less, variety in economic methodologies, as well as within methodologies. Further, if variety is not to take the form of “anything goes”, then critical discussion by economists of different approaches to economics, and of variety itself, is required

    Evidence for the Onset of Color Transparency in ρ0\rho^0 Electroproduction off Nuclei

    We have measured the nuclear transparency of the incoherent diffractive A(e,eâ€Čρ0)A(e,e'\rho^0) process in 12^{12}C and 56^{56}Fe targets relative to 2^2H using a 5 GeV electron beam. The nuclear transparency, the ratio of the produced ρ0\rho^0's on a nucleus relative to deuterium, which is sensitive to ρA\rho A interaction, was studied as function of the coherence length (lcl_c), a lifetime of the hadronic fluctuation of the virtual photon, and the four-momentum transfer squared (Q2Q^2). While the transparency for both 12^{12}C and 56^{56}Fe showed no lcl_c dependence, a significant Q2Q^2 dependence was measured, which is consistent with calculations that included the color transparency effects.Comment: 6 pages and 4 figure

    All-sky search for long-duration gravitational wave transients with initial LIGO

    We present the results of a search for long-duration gravitational wave transients in two sets of data collected by the LIGO Hanford and LIGO Livingston detectors between November 5, 2005 and September 30, 2007, and July 7, 2009 and October 20, 2010, with a total observational time of 283.0 days and 132.9 days, respectively. The search targets gravitational wave transients of duration 10-500 s in a frequency band of 40-1000 Hz, with minimal assumptions about the signal waveform, polarization, source direction, or time of occurrence. All candidate triggers were consistent with the expected background; as a result we set 90% confidence upper limits on the rate of long-duration gravitational wave transients for different types of gravitational wave signals. For signals from black hole accretion disk instabilities, we set upper limits on the source rate density between 3.4×10-5 and 9.4×10-4 Mpc-3 yr-1 at 90% confidence. These are the first results from an all-sky search for unmodeled long-duration transient gravitational waves. © 2016 American Physical Society
