Ground State Energy of the One-Dimensional Discrete Random Schr\"{o}dinger Operator with Bernoulli Potential
In this paper, we show the that the ground state energy of the one
dimensional Discrete Random Schroedinger Operator with Bernoulli Potential is
controlled asymptotically as the system size N goes to infinity by the random
variable \ell_N, the length the longest consecutive sequence of sites on the
lattice with potential equal to zero. Specifically, we will show that for
almost every realization of the potential the ground state energy behaves
asymptotically as in the sense that the ratio of
the quantities goes to one
Genome-Wide Studies Reveal that H3K4me3 Modification in Bivalent Genes Is Dynamically Regulated during the Pluripotent Cell Cycle and Stabilized upon Differentiation
Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus.Stem cell phenotypes are reflected by posttranslational histone modifications, and this chromatin-related memory must be mitotically inherited to maintain cell identity through proliferative expansion. In human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), bivalent genes with both activating (H3K4me3) and repressive (H3K27me3) histone modifications are essential to sustain pluripotency. Yet, the molecular mechanisms by which this epigenetic landscape is transferred to progeny cells remain to be established. By mapping genomic enrichment of H3K4me3/H3K27me3 in pure populations of hESCs in G2, mitotic, and G1 phases of the cell cycle, we found striking variations in the levels of H3K4me3 through the G2-M-G1 transition. Analysis of a representative set of bivalent genes revealed that chromatin modifiers involved in H3K4 methylation/demethylation are recruited to bivalent gene promoters in a cell cycle-dependent fashion. Interestingly, bivalent genes enriched with H3K4me3 exclusively during mitosis undergo the strongest upregulation after induction of differentiation. Furthermore, the histone modification signature of genes that remain bivalent in differentiated cells resolves into a cell cycle-independent pattern after lineage commitment. These results establish a new dimension of chromatin regulation important in the maintenance of pluripotencyhttp://mcb.asm.org/content/36/4/61
Diffractive Meson Production and the Quark-Pomeron Coupling
Diffractive meson production at HERA offers interesting possibilities to
investigate diffractive processes and thus to learn something about the
properties of the pomeron. The most succesful phenomenological description of
the pomeron so far assumes it to couple like a isoscalar photon to
single quarks. This coupling leads, however, to problems for exclusive
diffractive reactions. We propose a new phenomenological pomeron vertex, which
leads to very good fits to the known data, but avoids the problems of the old
vertex.Comment: 20 pages, latex with uuencoded postscript, revised versio
Deregulation of the endogenous C/EBPβ LIP isoform predisposes to tumorigenesis
Two long and one truncated isoforms (termed LAP*, LAP, and LIP, respectively) of the transcription factor CCAAT enhancer binding protein beta (C/EBPbeta) are expressed from a single intronless Cebpb gene by alternative translation initiation. Isoform expression is sensitive to mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)-mediated activation of the translation initiation machinery and relayed through an upstream open reading frame (uORF) on the C/EBPbeta mRNA. The truncated C/EBPbeta LIP, initiated by high mTOR activity, has been implied in neoplasia, but it was never shown whether endogenous C/EBPbeta LIP may function as an oncogene. In this study, we examined spontaneous tumor formation in C/EBPbeta knockin mice that constitutively express only the C/EBPbeta LIP isoform from its own locus. Our data show that deregulated C/EBPbeta LIP predisposes to oncogenesis in many tissues. Gene expression profiling suggests that C/EBPbeta LIP supports a pro-tumorigenic microenvironment, resistance to apoptosis, and alteration of cytokine/chemokine expression. The results imply that enhanced translation reinitiation of C/EBPbeta LIP promotes tumorigenesis. Accordingly, pharmacological restriction of mTOR function might be a therapeutic option in tumorigenesis that involves enhanced expression of the truncated C/EBPbeta LIP isoform. KEY MESSAGE: Elevated C/EBPbeta LIP promotes cancer in mice. C/EBPbeta LIP is upregulated in B-NHL. Deregulated C/EBPbeta LIP alters apoptosis and cytokine/chemokine networks. Deregulated C/EBPbeta LIP may support a pro-tumorigenic microenvironment
From GHz to mHz: A Multiwavelength Study of the Acoustically Active 14 August 2004 M7.4 Solar Flare
We carried out an electromagnetic acoustic analysis of the solar flare of 14
August 2004 in active region AR10656 from the radio to the hard X-ray spectrum.
The flare was a GOES soft X-ray class M7.4 and produced a detectable sun quake,
confirming earlier inferences that relatively low-energy flares may be able to
generate sun quakes. We introduce the hypothesis that the seismicity of the
active region is closely related to the heights of coronal magnetic loops that
conduct high-energy particles from the flare. In the case of relatively short
magnetic loops, chromospheric evaporation populates the loop interior with
ionized gas relatively rapidly, expediting the scattering of remaining trapped
high-energy electrons into the magnetic loss cone and their rapid precipitation
into the chromosphere. This increases both the intensity and suddenness of the
chromospheric heating, satisfying the basic conditions for an acoustic emission
that penetrates into the solar interior.Comment: Accepted in Solar Physic
Weighted norm inequalities for polynomial expansions associated to some measures with mass points
Fourier series in orthogonal polynomials with respect to a measure on

inequalities for the partial sum operators , their maximal operator
and the commutator , where denotes the operator of pointwise
multiplication by b \in \BMO. We also prove some norm inequalities for

Organics in comet 67P – a first comparative analysis of mass spectra from ROSINA–DFMS, COSAC and Ptolemy
The ESA Rosetta spacecraft followed comet 67P at a close distance for more than 2 yr. In addition, it deployed the lander Philae on to the surface of the comet. The (surface) composition of the comet is of great interest to understand the origin and evolution of comets. By combining measurements made on the comet itself and in the coma, we probe the nature of this surface material and compare it to remote sensing observations. We compare data from the double focusing mass spectrometer (DFMS) of the ROSINA experiment on ESA's Rosetta mission and previously published data from the two mass spectrometers COSAC (COmetary Sampling And Composition) and Ptolemy on the lander. The mass spectra of all three instruments show very similar patterns of mainly CHO-bearing molecules that sublimate at temperatures of 275 K. The DFMS data also show a great variety of CH-, CHN-, CHS-, CHO2- and CHNO-bearing saturated and unsaturated species. Methyl isocyanate, propanal and glycol aldehyde suggested by the earlier analysis of the measured COSAC spectrum could not be confirmed. The presence of polyoxymethylene in the Ptolemy spectrum was found to be unlikely. However, the signature of the aromatic compound toluene was identified in DFMS and Ptolemy data. Comparison with remote sensing instruments confirms the complex nature of the organics on the surface of 67P, which is much more diverse than anticipated
