Uveitis manifestations in patients of the Swiss Inflammatory Bowel Disease Cohort Study.
The knowledge about risk factors for the onset of uveitis manifestations in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is still limited. Here, we aimed to provide an overview of the clinical factors associated with the onset of uveitis in the Swiss IBD Cohort Study (SIBDCS).
We included epidemiological and clinical data from 1840 patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and 1426 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) followed up in the SIBDCS between 2006 and 2018. Associations between disease characteristics and uveitis were assessed in univariate and multivariate analyses.
Overall, we identified 285 patients with uveitis. Uveitis was more frequent in patients with CD (11.1%; 205 of 1635) than UC (5.6%; 80 of 1346; odds ratio 2.11, p < 0.001). The occurrence of uveitis manifestations in patients with UC and CD was significantly associated with the onset of other extraintestinal manifestations, also in multivariate analyses. The onset of uveitis was associated with the hallmark features of severe disease in both CD and UC, including a higher clinical disease activity index and the use of immunomodulators or calcineurin inhibitors. In CD, uveitis was more frequent in females and showed a positive correlation with a positive family history of IBD.
Our data demonstrate that uveitis in IBD occurs more often in CD as well as in women and is associated with a more severe disease course. This might guide physicians' awareness in at-risk patients to the presence of uveitis extraintestinal manifestations and help to improve patient care
Dynamics of orientational ordering in fluid membranes
We study the dynamics of orientational phase ordering in fluid membranes.
Through numerical simulation we find an unusually slow coarsening of
topological texture, which is limited by subdiffusive propagation of membrane
curvature. The growth of the orientational correlation length obeys a
power law with in the late stage. We also discuss
defect profiles and correlation patterns in terms of long-range interaction

Layer dynamics of a freely standing smectic-A film
We study the hydrodynamics of a freely-standing smectic-A film in the
isothermal, incompressible limit theoretically by analyzing the linearized
hydrodynamic equations of motion with proper boundary conditions. The dynamic
properties for the system can be obtained from the response functions for the
free surfaces. Permeation is included and its importance near the free surfaces
is discussed. The hydrodynamic mode structure for the dynamics of the system is
compared with that of bulk systems. We show that to describe the dynamic
correlation functions for the system, in general, it is necessary to consider
the smectic layer displacement and the velocity normal to the layers,
, together. Finally, our analysis also provides a basis for the
theoretical study of the off-equilibrium dynamics of freely-standing smectic-A

Simulating maize plasticity in leaf appearance and size using regulation rules

Superconducting fluctuation corrections to ultrasound attenuation in layered superconductors
We consider the temperature dependence of the sound attenuation and sound
velocity in layered impure metals due to superconducting fluctuations of the
order parameter above the critical temperature. We obtain the dependence on
material properties of these fluctuation corrections in the hydrodynamic limit,
where the electron mean free path is much smaller than the wavelength of sound
and where the electron collision rate is much larger than the sound frequency.
For longitudinal sound propagating perpendicular to the layers, the open Fermi
surface condition leads to a suppression of the divergent contributions to
leading order, in contrast with the case of paraconductivity. The leading
temperature dependent corrections, given by the Aslamazov-Larkin, Maki-Thompson
and density of states terms, remain finite as T->Tc. Nevertheless, the
sensitivity of new ultrasonic experiments on layered organic conductors should

Interactions between proteins bound to biomembranes
We study a physical model for the interaction between general inclusions
bound to fluid membranes that possess finite tension, as well as the usual
bending rigidity. We are motivated by an interest in proteins bound to cell
membranes that apply forces to these membranes, due to either entropic or
direct chemical interactions. We find an exact analytic solution for the
repulsive interaction between two similar circularly symmetric inclusions. This
repulsion extends over length scales of order tens of nanometers, and contrasts
with the membrane-mediated contact attraction for similar inclusions on
tensionless membranes. For non circularly symmetric inclusions we study the
small, algebraically long-ranged, attractive contribution to the force that
arises. We discuss the relevance of our results to biological phenomena, such
as the budding of caveolae from cell membranes and the striations that are

Familial Occurrence of Multiple Sclerosis with Thyroid Disease and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Multiple sclerosis (MS) has some features which suggest it is an autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases frequently occur in families, and patients and families often have more than one type of autoimmune disease. However, there are few reports of MS occurring in patients or families with other autoimmune conditions. It is difficult to make a separate diagnosis of MS in a patient who has a systemic autoimmune disease such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or Sjogren's syndrome, because these diseases can affect the nervous system directly. However, it is possible to make independent diagnoses of MS and an autoimmune disease confined to another single organ in the same patient, or diagnoses of MS and SLE (or other autoimmune diseases) in different family members. Here we describe clinically definite MS in 2 sisters, one of whom had Graves' disease, and the other of whom had a daughter with SLE and with a high titre of anti-thyroid antibodies. Other female family members over 4 generations had histories of thyroid disease, MS and Addison's disease. Available family members were HLA typed. The MS patients were positive for HLA DR2. All but one of the affected family members were related to the proband on the maternal side, and all of these affected females shared an HLA haplotype. However, this haplotype was also present in unaffected individuals. Thus HLA type alone cannot account for the familial occurrence of these disorders. We conclude that, in this family, MS, like autoimmune thyroid disease and SLE, may be an autoimmune disease developing in genetically predisposed individuals

Local-feature-based similarity measure for stochastic resonance in visual perception of spatially structured images
For images, stochastic resonance or useful-noise effects have previously been assessed with low-level pixel-based information measures. Such measures are not sensitive to coherent spatial structures usually existing in images. As a result, we show that such measures are not sufficient to properly account for stochastic resonance occurring in visual perception. We introduce higher-level similarity measures, inspired from visual perception, and based on local feature descriptors of scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) type. We demonstrate that such SIFT-based measures allow for an assessment of stochastic resonance that matches the visual perception of images with spatial structures. Constructive action of noise is registered in this way with both additive noise and multiplicative speckle noise. Speckle noise, with its grainy appearance, is particularly prone to introducing spurious spatial structures in images, and the stochastic resonance visually perceived and quantitatively assessed with SIFT-based measures is specially examined in this context
