    Effects of varying sweet lupin dietary inclusion levels on feather classes, leather traits and meat composition of feedlot ostriches

    The main consumer products derived from ostriches are feathers, leather and meat. Despite progress in optimizing production practices, additional information is still necessary about the value of various raw materials as feed to ensure cost-efficient production. This study aimed to determine the effects of the gradual replacement of soybean oilcake meal with sweet lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) seed in the diet of feedlot ostriches on the feather, leather and meat production characteristics. The chicks received a standard commercial pre-starter ostrich diet, with the trial utilizing 141 ostrich chicks (Âą 10 chicks per group), beginning with the starter phase (83 days posthatching) and reared until 11 months of age. Five iso-nutritional diets were formulated for each feeding phase (starter, grower and finisher) according to specifications for each phase. In each phase, a control diet (Diet 1, 0% lupin diet (LD)) was formulated using soybean oilcake meal as the sole protein source and Diet 5 (100LD) was formulated to include the maximum amount of sweet lupin according to the specifications for the species and feeding phase. The maximum amount of sweet lupin included in 100LD therefore differs among the three feeding phases. The remaining three diets were formulated by gradually replacing soybean oilcake meal with lupins in the following increments: 100 : 0 (0LD); 75 : 25 (25LD); 50 : 50 (50LD); 25 : 75 (75LD), and 0 : 100 (100LD). There were three replications per treatment, resulting in 15 groups of birds. Feed and water were supplied ad libitum. No differences were found for moisture, crude protein and ash contents of the meat. However, the intra-muscular fat content was significantly influenced by the sweet lupin content of the diet. No differences were found for any of the feather classes that were measured. Regarding leather traits, the treatment diets had no effect on the crust sizes, leather grades, nodule diameters, and nodule densities. Differences were observed for leather thickness and pinhole number. It can be concluded that the sweet lupin inclusion levels evaluated in this study had little influence on leather traits, meat composition and feather classes.Keywords: Diets, nutrition, ostrich products, slaughter ostriche

    Effect of varying levels of dietary inclusion of sweet lupin on the growth production characteristics of ostriches (Struthio camelus var. domesticus)

    Nutrition contributes approximately 75% of the total input costs to an intensive ostrich production unit. An increase in the price of traditional protein sources thus necessitates finding cheaper alternatives. Sweet lupins were identified as a possible alternative; therefore, the effect of feeding various sweet lupin inclusion levels was evaluated throughout the different feeding phases. One hundred and forty ostrich chicks were randomly divided into five dietary treatments with three replications each. The chicks all received a standard commercial pre-starter ostrich diet. Five iso-nutritional diets were formulated for each feeding phase according to specifications set out for each of the different feeding phases using Mixit2+ software. For each feeding phase the diets contained either soybean oilcake meal (control diet, 0LD) or sweet lupins (alternative protein source). The 100 lupin diet (LD) was formulated to include the maximum amount of sweet lupins according to the specifications for the specific species and the feeding phase, and therefore differs between the three feeding phases. Soybean oilcake meal was thus gradually replaced by sweet lupins in the following ratios: 100:0 (0LD), 75:25 (25LD), 50:50 (50LD), 25:75 (75LD), and 0:100 (100LD). Feed and water were supplied ad libitum. Feed intakes and live weights were measured every fortnight until slaughter at ca. 11 months of age. No differences were found between the treatment diets for the live weight, dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG) or feed conversion ratio (FCR) at the end of each feeding phase. However, the birds on the 75LD tended to have the highest end weight and ADG, and those on the 100LD the lowest at the end of the starter phase. No differences were found for slaughter weight, dressing percentage and big drum muscle weight of the birds. Birds on the 50LD and 75LD tended to have the heaviest cold carcasses; this differed from the 100LD birds which had the lightest. Birds fed the 50LD had heavier thigh weights than those on the other diets. The results of this study indicate that soybean oilcake meal can be replaced in the diets of slaughter ostriches with sweet lupins up to 15% (75LD) in starter diets and 30% (100LD) in grower and finisher diets without any significant effect on any of the production and slaughter traits.Keywords: alternative protein, average daily gain, dry matter intake, feed conversion ratio, lupins, ostrich nutrition, productio

    RESPOND – A patient-centred programme to prevent secondary falls in older people presenting to the emergency department with a fall: Protocol for a mixed methods programme evaluation.

    Background Programme evaluations conducted alongside randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have potential to enhance understanding of trial outcomes. This paper describes a multi-level programme evaluation to be conducted alongside an RCT of a falls prevention programme (RESPOND). Objectives 1) To conduct a process evaluation in order to identify the degree of implementation fidelity and associated barriers and facilitators. 2) To evaluate the primary intended impact of the programme: participation in fall prevention strategies, and the factors influencing participation. 3) To identify the factors influencing RESPOND RCT outcomes: falls, fall injuries and ED re-presentations. Methods/ Design Five hundred and twenty eight community-dwelling adults aged 60–90 years presenting to two EDs with a fall will be recruited and randomly assigned to the intervention or standard care group. All RESPOND participants and RESPOND clinicians will be included in the evaluation. A mixed methods design will be used and a programme logic model will frame the evaluation. Data will be sourced from interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, clinician case notes, recruitment records, participant-completed calendars, hospital administrative datasets, and audio-recordings of intervention contacts. Quantitative data will be analysed via descriptive and inferential statistics and qualitative data will be interpreted using thematic analysis. Discussion The RESPOND programme evaluation will provide information about contextual and influencing factors related to the RCT outcomes. The results will assist researchers, clinicians, and policy makers to make decisions about future falls prevention interventions. Insights gained are likely to be transferable to preventive health programmes for a range of chronic conditions

    A total of 150 isolates of Staphylococcus aureus were subjected to the tests on the API Staph system. Of these, 50 were also tested by conventional methods, using the same tests as those found on the API Staph strips. Applying the principles of numerical taxonomy, the relationship between these isolates was 82 % and more. Tests for the metabolism of sucrose and N-acetyl-glucosamine and for the production of argenine dihydrolysate and urease appear to be superfluous in the identification of S. aureus in this system.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.     Lokale anesthetica worden in de tandheelkunde frequent toegepast. Aangezien weinig gegevens bekend zijn over de incidentie van complicaties na toediening van lokale anesthesie, werd een prospectief onderzoek verricht onder een groep van 219 patiÍnten. Complicaties die het meest frequent werden waargenomen waren insufficiÍnte anesthesie (17%) en positieve aspiratie (3%). Pijn tijdens injecteren, parese van de nervus facialis, lokale bleekheid (´blanching´), hematoom en vasovagale collaps werden als afzonderlijke complicatie bij minder dan 1% van de patiÍnten waargenomen. De resultaten suggereerden dat toediening van een lokaal anestheticum geassocieerd is met een kleine kans op ongewenste neveneffecten en dat deze ongewenste neveneffecten meestal lokale complicaties betreffen met een beperkte omvang en ernst

    Enhanced THz transmission apertures through sub-wavelength annular apertures

    We report on the development of a surface micromachined process for the fabrication of coaxial apertures surrounded by periodic grooves. The process uses a combination of copper electroforming and the negative epoxy based resist, SU8, as a thin flexible substrate. The device dimensions are suitable for the implementation of filters at THz frequencies, and measurements show a pass band centred around 1.5 THz. These devices could form the basis of the next generation of THz biosensors

    Blood pressure and urinary sodium excretion in relation to the A-1984G adrenomedullin polymorphism in a Chinese population

    Adrenomedullin (ADM) is a vasodilator and inhibits salt appetite. An A-to-G substitution at position -1984 in the promoter region of the ADM gene likely increases transcription. We therefore investigated this polymorphism in relation to blood pressure and urinary sodium in a Chinese population. We genotyped 427 Chinese enrolled in a family-based population study. We measured blood pressure by conventional sphygmomanometry and ambulatory monitoring. The frequencies of the ADM AA, AG, and GG genotypes were 50.6, 38.2, and 11.2%, respectively. In adjusted analyses, G allele carriers, compared to AA homozygotes, had significantly lower conventional (45.3 versus 48.5 mm Hg, P=0.004) and 24-h (42.6 versus 44.3 mm Hg, P=0.03) pulse pressures and urinary sodium excretion (143.8 versus 159.4 mmol/day, P=0.03). In parents, but not offspring, both systolic pressure and pulse pressure were significantly (P<0.01) lower in G allele carriers. The genotypic difference in sodium excretion was consistent across the age range. In 68 informative offspring, transmission of the G allele was associated with lower urinary sodium excretion (effect size, 40.1 mmol/day, P=0.01). In 81 healthy volunteers, the plasma ADM concentration was 15.2% higher in GG homozygotes than in sex- and age-matched AA subjects (11.4 versus 9.9 pmol/l, P=0.10). In conclusion, in Chinese, the ADM -1984G allele is associated with lower sodium excretion and in older subjects also with lower systolic pressure and narrower pulse pressure

    Workplace mentoring of residents in generic competencies by an independent coach

    INTRODUCTION: During postgraduate education in pulmonology, supervisors are responsible for training residents in generic competencies such as communication, professionalism and collaboration, but their focus commonly lies more on medical-technical competencies. As an alternative approach to supporting residents to develop generic skills, we developed a personal mentoring program with a non-medical professional as mentor. In this study, the residents' experiences with the mentoring program were evaluated.METHODS: After an introductory session in which individual learning goals were established, pulmonology residents received at least six, 60-90-minute, individual, mentoring sessions largely consisting of feedback after being observed during daily clinical activities, over a period of 9 months. The residents' experiences with mentoring were explored through in-depth interviews followed by a qualitative content analysis.RESULTS: From March to November 2016, ten residents in pulmonology completed the program. Despite initial scepticism, mentoring encouraged residents to reflect deeply on their professional interactions. This caused an increased awareness of the effects of their communication and behaviour on patients. Experimenting with communication and different behaviours in subsequent interactions felt rewarding and contributed to further development, resulting in increased self-confidence and job satisfaction.DISCUSSION: Mentoring residents by non-medical coaching was associated with improved residents' proficiency in generic competencies.Public Health and primary carePrevention, Population and Disease management (PrePoD

    Analysing the Control Software of the Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider

    The control software of the CERN Compact Muon Solenoid experiment contains over 30,000 finite state machines. These state machines are organised hierarchically: commands are sent down the hierarchy and state changes are sent upwards. The sheer size of the system makes it virtually impossible to fully understand the details of its behaviour at the macro level. This is fuelled by unclarities that already exist at the micro level. We have solved the latter problem by formally describing the finite state machines in the mCRL2 process algebra. The translation has been implemented using the ASF+SDF meta-environment, and its correctness was assessed by means of simulations and visualisations of individual finite state machines and through formal verification of subsystems of the control software. Based on the formalised semantics of the finite state machines, we have developed dedicated tooling for checking properties that can be verified on finite state machines in isolation.Comment: To appear in FSEN'11.
