Endothelial cell and hemostatic activation in relation to cytokines in patients with sepsis

Sepsis is commonly associated with disturbances of the hemostatic balance. Most of the pathophysiological changes in sepsis are caused by endotoxin acting directly through endothelial injury or indirectly through release of cytokines with procoagulant effects. The relation between cytokines and hemostatic parameters was assessed in 32 patients with sepsis. Prothrombin fragment 1+2 (F1+2), thrombin-antithrombin III complexes (TAT), tissue type plasminogen activator (t-PA) functional and antigen, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), plasminalpha2-antiplasmin complexes (PAP), D-Dimer, thrombomodulin (TM) and von Willebrand factor (vWF) were measured in patients and in 30 healthy subjects. The levels of cytokines TNF-alpha and interleukin-6 (IL-6) also were determined. A significant increase of F1+2, TAT, PAI-1, PAP, and D-Dimer was observed in septic patients as compared with controls (p<0.0001), whereas t-PA activity was significantly reduced (p<0.01). The markers of endothelial cell activation TM, vWF, and t-PA antigen also were elevated significantly as compared with the control group (p<0.01). Finally, we found a marked increase of TNF-alpha and IL-6 (p<0.0001). Whereas the increase of cytokine levels could be partially responsible for the hemostatic activation, it did not correlate with markers of endothelial activation in patients with sepsis

Se presenta un caso de un hombre de 51 años, que tras sufrir una crisis convulsiva presentó dolor e impotencia funcional en ambos hombros. Tras realizar estudio radiográ- fico y TAC, se comprobó la existencia de una luxación escapulohumeral bilateral. El paciente fue tratado con reducción cerrada e inmovilización del miembro en abducción y rotación externa con un yeso toracobraquial.A case of bilateral posterior dislocation of the scapulo-humeral joint ocurring in a 51-year-old men after a convulsive attack is reported. Inmediately after convulsions, the patient refered pain and funtional disability in both shoulders and bilateral scapulo-humeral dislocation was confirmed by conventional radiograhips and CT-scan. Embedding the Pentagon

The Pentagon Model is an explicit supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, which involves a new strongly-interacting SU(5) gauge theory at TeV-scale energies. We show that the Pentagon can be embedded into an SU(5) x SU(5) x SU(5) gauge group at the GUT scale. The doublet-triplet splitting problem, and proton decay compatible with experimental bounds, can be successfully addressed in this context. The simplest approach fails to provide masses for the lighter two generations of quarks and leptons; however, this problem can be solved by the addition of a pair of antisymmetric tensor fields and an axion.Comment: 39 page

Schistosomus reflexus en un felino: reporte de caso

The case of a 5-year-old crossbred female cat in her first gestation was presented for consultation. The cat had a stillborn present in the birth canal, which was extracted manually. A second puppy is expelled alive but was euthanized because of her clinical infeasibility. The two puppies presented a malformation in the abdominal region with exposure of some viscera, considered as Schistosomus reflexus syndrome. The radiological and necropsy diagnostic evaluation of the second puppy was performed, finding a closure defect of the abdominal midline with viscera exposure (small intestine, liver, right kidney and spleen among others). The radiological evaluation showed the eventration of abdominal organs without clear differentiation between them, kyphosis in the thoracolumbar segment, lordosis in the lumbar portion and oligodactyly in the right posterior limb.Se presenta el caso de una hembra felina de raza mestiza de 5 años en su primer parto llevada a consulta. La gata tenía un mortinato presente en el canal de parto el cual se extrae manualmente. Un segundo cachorro es expulsado vivo, pero por su la inviabilidad clínica se procedió a la eutanasia. Las dos crías presentaron una malformación en la región abdominal con exposición de algunas vísceras, considerada como el síndrome de Schistosomus reflexus. Se realizó la evaluación diagnóstica radiológica y por necropsia del segundo cachorro encontrando un defecto de cierre de la línea media abdominal con exposición de vísceras (intestino delgado, hígado, riñón derecho y bazo entre otros). En la evaluación radiológica se evidenció eventración de órganos abdominales sin diferenciación clara entre ellos, cifosis en el segmento toracolumbar, lordosis en la porción lumbar y oligodactilia en el miembro posterior derecho
