    The Effect of Acupressure at GB-21 and SP-6 Acupoints on Anxiety Level and Maternal-Fetal Attachment in Primiparous Women: a Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

    Background: Delivery is one of the most stressful events in women’s life. Excessive anxiety, in turn, increases delivery and pregnancy complications. Mother’s positive experience of delivery leads to more effective maternal-fetal attachment in the first few hours of birth. Objectives: The present study aimed to compare the effects of acupressure at two different acupoints on anxiety level and maternal-fetal attachment in primiparous women. Materials and Methods: In this study, 150 primiparous women were allocated to acupressure at GB-21 acupoint, acupressure at SP-6 acupoint, and control group. The women in their active phase of delivery were enrolled in the study and pressure was applied to the acupoints for 20 minutes. Mother’s anxiety level was assessed using Spielberger’s questionnaire before and one hour after the intervention. In addition, maternal-fetal attachment behaviors were evaluated using Avant’s questionnaire during the first breastfeeding. Then the data were introduced to the SPSS (v. 13) and were analyzed using t test and one way ANOVA. Results: The results revealed no significant difference among the three groups regarding the anxiety level before the intervention (P > 0.05). One hour after the intervention, this measure was significantly lower in the intervention groups in comparison to the control group (P 0.05). Moreover, maternal-fetal attachment was higher in the intervention groups in comparison with the control group (P < 0.001). Conclusions: Acupressure at both acupoints reduced anxiety level and increased maternal-fetal attachment. This method can be easily used in the delivery room

    A theory of non-local linear drift wave transport

    Transport events in turbulent tokamak plasmas often exhibit non-local or non-diffusive action at a distance features that so far have eluded a conclusive theoretical description. In this paper a theory of non-local transport is investigated through a Fokker-Planck equation with fractional velocity derivatives. A dispersion relation for density gradient driven linear drift modes is derived including the effects of the fractional velocity derivative in the Fokker-Planck equation. It is found that a small deviation (a few percent) from the Maxwellian distribution function alters the dispersion relation such that the growth rates are substantially increased and thereby may cause enhanced levels of transport.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures.     Distance-generalized Core Decomposition

    The kk-core of a graph is defined as the maximal subgraph in which every vertex is connected to at least kk other vertices within that subgraph. In this work we introduce a distance-based generalization of the notion of kk-core, which we refer to as the (k,h)(k,h)-core, i.e., the maximal subgraph in which every vertex has at least kk other vertices at distance ≀h\leq h within that subgraph. We study the properties of the (k,h)(k,h)-core showing that it preserves many of the nice features of the classic core decomposition (e.g., its connection with the notion of distance-generalized chromatic number) and it preserves its usefulness to speed-up or approximate distance-generalized notions of dense structures, such as hh-club. Computing the distance-generalized core decomposition over large networks is intrinsically complex. However, by exploiting clever upper and lower bounds we can partition the computation in a set of totally independent subcomputations, opening the door to top-down exploration and to multithreading, and thus achieving an efficient algorithm

    Optimal Control of a Class of Timed Discrete Event Systems with Shared Resources, An Approach Based on the Hadamard Product of Series in Dioids

    The topic of this paper is modeling and control of timed discrete event systems in a dioid framework if systems operate under the restriction of shared resources. The behavior of such systems can be elegantly modeled using the Hadamard product of series in dioids. Using residuation of the Hadamard product, it is possible to compute optimal control, where optimality is in the sense of a lexicographical order reflecting the chosen prioritization of subsystems. The paper concludes with an example, illustrating the efficiency of the proposed method

    Environmental Risks and Agricultural Commodities

    As natural disasters are expected to increase both in severity and frequency, their impact on agricultural commodities and the food supply chain is likely to rise in tandem. We use a unique data set of natural disasters that occurred globally between 1970 and 2015 and study their impact on the price and price volatility of eight globally traded agricultural commodities that account for more than 75% of the food supply in the world. Our results show that price and the price volatility of commodities are impacted around the occurrence of a natural disaster in producing countries. In addition, we find that the affected country’s production shares, the total damage caused by a natural disaster relative to the affected country’s GDP, and the demand pressure for the commodity have an impact on the magnitude of price and price volatility changes of a given commodity around the occurrence of a natural disaster

    Combining mammaglobin and carcinoembryonic mRNA markers for early detection of micrometastases from breast cancers - a molecular study of 59 patients

    Introduction: As many as 30% of node-negative breast cancer patients relapse within five years, suggesting that current histological detection methods are inadequate for identifying metastatic disease. Detecting small number of cancer cells in the breast tissue or lymph node by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays using a combination of tissue and cancer specific markers might be very useful in the early detection or monitoring of the treatment. Mammaglobin is a member of the uteroglobin gene family and appears to be expressed only in breast tissue. Carcinoembryonic antigen has been the preferred molecular marker for detection of micro metastases in lymph nodes in almost all carcinomas. Materials and Methods: Samples were collected from randomly chosen breast cancer patients undergoing modified mastectomy or breast conserving surgery between September 2003 and July 2004. RT-PCR was applied to study the expression of MMG and CEA markers. Breast cancer micrometastases in axillary lymph nodes were also assessed. Results: The MMG marker was positive in 9/10 normal breast tissues, 3/ 3 breast fibroadenomas and 37/39 of breast carcinoma tissues, giving an overall sensitivity of 94%. The sensitivity was 80% for metastatic lymph node samples. On the other hand CEA showed 95% sensitivity for malignant breast tumors and 100% sensitivity for metastatic lymph nodes. Conclusions: RT-PCR using a combination of MMG and CEA markers is a powerful tool to complement current routine histopathology techniques for detection of breast cancer metastasis in axillary nodes

    Electromagnetic emission of white dwarf binary mergers

    It has been recently proposed that the ejected matter from white dwarf (WD) binary mergers can produce transient, optical and infrared emission similar to the "kilonovae" of neutron star (NS) binary mergers. To confirm this we calculate the electromagnetic emission from WD-WD mergers and compare with kilonova observations. We simulate WD-WD mergers leading to a massive, fast rotating, highly magnetized WD with an adapted version of the smoothed-particle-hydrodynamics (SPH) code Phantom. We thus obtain initial conditions for the ejecta such as escape velocity, mass and initial position and distribution. The subsequent thermal and dynamical evolution of the ejecta is obtained by integrating the energy-conservation equation accounting for expansion cooling and a heating source given by the fallback accretion onto the newly-formed WD and its magneto-dipole radiation. We show that magnetospheric processes in the merger can lead to a prompt, short gamma-ray emission of up to ≈1046\approx 10^{46} erg in a timescale of 0.10.1-11 s. The bulk of the ejecta initially expands non-relativistically with velocity 0.01c0.01 c and then it accelerates to 0.1c0.1 c due to the injection of fallback accretion energy. The ejecta become transparent at optical wavelengths around ∌7\sim 7 days post-merger with a luminosity 104110^{41}-104210^{42} erg s−1^{-1}. The X-ray emission from the fallback accretion becomes visible around ∌150\sim 150-200200 day post-merger with a luminosity of 103910^{39} erg s−1^{-1}. We also predict the post-merger time at which the central WD should appear as a pulsar depending on the value of the magnetic field and rotation period.Comment: 12 pages, Accepted for publication in JCA

    Acoustic wave propagation in the solar sub-photosphere with localised magnetic field concentration: effect of magnetic tension

    Aims: We analyse numerically the propagation and dispersion of acoustic waves in the solar-like sub-photosphere with localised non-uniform magnetic field concentrations, mimicking sunspots with various representative magnetic field configurations. Methods: Numerical simulations of wave propagation through the solar sub-photosphere with a localised magnetic field concentration are carried out using SAC, which solves the MHD equations for gravitationally stratified plasma. The initial equilibrium density and pressure stratifications are derived from a standard solar model. Acoustic waves are generated by a source located at the height corresponding approximately to the visible surface of the Sun. By means of local helioseismology we analyse the response of vertical velocity at the level corresponding to the visible solar surface to changes induced by magnetic field in the interior. Results: The results of numerical simulations of acoustic wave propagation and dispersion in the solar sub-photosphere with localised magnetic field concentrations of various types are presented. Time-distance diagrams of the vertical velocity perturbation at the level corresponding to the visible solar surface show that the magnetic field perturbs and scatters acoustic waves and absorbs the acoustic power of the wave packet. For the weakly magnetised case, the effect of magnetic field is mainly thermodynamic, since the magnetic field changes the temperature stratification. However, we observe the signature of slow magnetoacoustic mode, propagating downwards, for the strong magnetic field cases
