    Additively manufacturable micro-mechanical logic gates.

Early examples of computers were almost exclusively based on mechanical devices. Although electronic computers became dominant in the past 60 years, recent advancements in three-dimensional micro-additive manufacturing technology provide new fabrication techniques for complex microstructures which have rekindled research interest in mechanical computations. Here we propose a new digital mechanical computation approach based on additively-manufacturable micro-mechanical logic gates. The proposed mechanical logic gates (i.e., NOT, AND, OR, NAND, and NOR gates) utilize multi-stable micro-flexures that buckle to perform Boolean computations based purely on mechanical forces and displacements with no electronic components. A key benefit of the proposed approach is that such systems can be additively fabricated as embedded parts of microarchitected metamaterials that are capable of interacting mechanically with their surrounding environment while processing and storing digital data internally without requiring electric power

Pt accelerated coarsening of A15 precipitates in Cr-Si alloys

The effect of alloying Cr-rich Cr-Si alloys with Pt was investigated by a combination of complementary experimental methods and atomic scale modelling. The investigated Cr-Si and Cr-Si-Pt (Cr ⩾86 at.%) alloys developed a two-phase microstructure consisting of Cr solid solution (Crss) matrix and strengthened by A15 precipitates during annealing at 1200\ub0C. It was found that additions of 2 at.% Pt increase the coarsening rate by almost five times considering annealing times up to 522 h. Pt was found to change the precipitate matrix orientation relationship, despite its low influence on the Crss matrix/A15 precipitate misfit. Through this experimental and modelling approach new insight has been gained into mechanisms of enhanced coarsening by Pt addition. The increased coarsening is principally attributed to a change in interface composition and structure resulting in different thermodynamic stabilities: Pt-containing A15 phase was found to have a broader compositional range if both elements, Pt and Si, are present compared to only Si. Additionally, the Crss phase was found to have a higher solubility of Pt and Si over just Si. Both factors additionally facilitated Ostwald ripening

High frequency of the expanded C9ORF72 hexanucleotide repeat in familial and sporadic Greek ALS patients.

An intronic expansion of a hexanucleotide GGGGCC repeat in the C9ORF72 gene has recently been shown to be an important cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in familial and sporadic cases. The frequency has only been defined in a small number of populations where the highest sporadic rate was identified in Finland (21.1%) and the lowest in mainland Italy (4.1%). We examined the C9ORF72 expansion in a series of 146 Greek ALS cases, 10.95% (n = 16) of cases carried the pathological expansion defined as greater than 30 repeats. In the 10 familial ALS probands, 50% (n = 5) of them carried a pathologically large expansion. In the remaining 136 sporadic ALS cases, 11 were carriers (8.2%). None of the 228 Greek controls carried an expanded repeat. The phenotype of our cases was spinal (13/16) or bulbar (3/16) ALS, the familial cases were all spinal ALS and none of our cases had behavioral frontotemporal dementia. Expansions in the C9ORF72 gene therefore represent a common cause of ALS in Greece and this test will be diagnostically very important to implement in the Greek population. The frequency is higher than other populations with the exception of Finland and this may be due to Greece being a relatively isolated population

Discontinuous transitions in double exchange materials

It is shown that the double exchange Hamiltonian, with weak antiferromagnetic interactions, has a rich variety of first order transitions between phases with different electronic densities and/or magnetizations. For band fillings in the range 0.3≤x≤0.50.3 \le x \le 0.5, and at finite temperatures, a discontinuous transition between phases with similar electronic densities but different magnetizations takes place. This sharp transition, which is not suppressed by electrostatic effects, and survives in the presence of an applied field, is consistent with the phenomenology of the doped manganites near the transition temperature.Comment: three more variational ansatzs considere

The first search for bosonic super-WIMPs with masses up to 1 MeV/c2^2 with GERDA

    Get PDF
We present the first search for bosonic super-WIMPs as keV-scale dark matter candidates performed with the GERDA experiment. GERDA is a neutrinoless double-beta decay experiment which operates high-purity germanium detectors enriched in 76^{76}Ge in an ultra-low background environment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) of INFN in Italy. Searches were performed for pseudoscalar and vector particles in the mass region from 60 keV/c2^2 to 1 MeV/c2^2. No evidence for a dark matter signal was observed, and the most stringent constraints on the couplings of super-WIMPs with masses above 120 keV/c2^2 have been set. As an example, at a mass of 150 keV/c2^2 the most stringent direct limits on the dimensionless couplings of axion-like particles and dark photons to electrons of gae<3⋅10−12g_{ae} < 3 \cdot 10^{-12} and α′/α<6.5⋅10−24{\alpha'}/{\alpha} < 6.5 \cdot 10^{-24} at 90% credible interval, respectively, were obtained.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters, added list of authors, updated ref.
