    A cluster model with random anisotropy for hysteresis jumps in CeNi1x_{1-x}Cux_{x} alloys

    Some Cerium compounds exhibit hysteresis cycles with sharp macroscopic jumps in the magnetization at very low temperatures. This effect is attributed to the formation of clusters in which the anisotropy competes with the applied magnetic field. Here, we present a simple model where a lattice of ferromagnetically coupled spins is separated in clusters of random sizes and with random anisotropy. Within this model, we obtain hysteresis cycles presenting jumps that behave in a similar way that the experimental ones, and that disappear when increasing the temperature. The results are in good agreement with the hysteresis cycles measured at very low temperatures in CeNi1x_{1-x}Cux_{x} and the comparison with these experimental results allows to discriminate the relative importance of the mechanisms driving the thermal evolution of the cycles.Comment: Accepted in PR

    Star Forming Objects in the Tidal Tails of Compact Groups

    A search for star forming objects belonging to tidal tails has been carried out in a sample of deep Halpha images of 16 compact groups of galaxies. A total of 36 objects with Halpha luminosity larger than 10^38 erg s-1 have been detected in five groups. The fraction of the total Halpha luminosity of their respective parent galaxies shown by the tidal objects is always below 5% except for the tidal features of HCG95, whose Halpha luminosity amounts to 65% of the total luminosity. Out of this 36 objects, 9 star forming tidal dwarf galaxy candidates have been finally identified on the basis of their projected distances to the nuclei of the parent galaxies and their total Halpha luminosities. Overall, the observed properties of the candidates resemble those previously reported for the so-called tidal dwarf galaxies.Comment: 5 gif figures. Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journa

    Chirping compact stars: gravitational radiation and detection degeneracy with binary systems A conceptual pathfinder for space-based gravitational-wave observatories

    Compressible, Riemann S-type ellipsoids can emit gravitational waves (GWs) with a chirp-like behavior (hereafter chirping ellipsoids, CELs). We show that the GW frequency-amplitude evolution of CELs (mass 1\sim 1~M_\odot, radius 103\sim10^3~km, polytropic equation of state with index n3n\approx 3) is indistinguishable from that emitted by double white dwarfs (DWDs) and by extreme mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) composed of an intermediate-mass (e.g.~103 M10^3~M_\odot) black hole and a planet-like (e.g.~104 M10^{-4}~M_\odot) companion, in a specific frequency interval within the detector sensitivity band in which the GWs of all these systems are quasi-monochromatic. We estimate that for reasonable astrophysical assumptions, the rates in the local Universe of CELs, DWDs and EMRIs in the mass range considered here, are very similar, posing a detection-degeneracy challenge for space-based GW detectors. The astrophysical implications of this CEL-binary detection degeneracy by space-based GW-detection facilities, are outlined.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.

    The graded Jacobi algebras and (co)homology

    Jacobi algebroids (i.e. `Jacobi versions' of Lie algebroids) are studied in the context of graded Jacobi brackets on graded commutative algebras. This unifies varios concepts of graded Lie structures in geometry and physics. A method of describing such structures by classical Lie algebroids via certain gauging (in the spirit of E.Witten's gauging of exterior derivative) is developed. One constructs a corresponding Cartan differential calculus (graded commutative one) in a natural manner. This, in turn, gives canonical generating operators for triangular Jacobi algebroids. One gets, in particular, the Lichnerowicz-Jacobi homology operators associated with classical Jacobi structures. Courant-Jacobi brackets are obtained in a similar way and use to define an abstract notion of a Courant-Jacobi algebroid and Dirac-Jacobi structure.     Positron localization effects on the Doppler broadening of the annihilation line: Aluminum as a case study

    The coincidence Doppler broadening (CDB) technique is widely used to measure one-dimensional momentum distributions of annihilation photons, with the aim of obtaining information on the chemical environment of open-volume defects. However, the quantitative analysis of CDB spectra needs to include also purely geometrical effects. A demonstration is given here, on the basis of CDB spectra measured in quenched and in deformed pure aluminum. The comparison of the experimental results with ab initio computations shows that the observed differences come from the difference in free volume seen by positrons trapped in quenched-in vacancies or in vacancylike defects associated to dislocations. The computation reproduces accurately all details of CDB spectra, including the peak near the Fermi break, which is due to the zero-point motion of the confined positron.Peer reviewe

    Assessment of a Sand Spit Morphodynamics Under Extreme Flood Events

    &lt;p&gt;Spits are landforms that present a complex morphology, which depends on currents, waves, sediment transport, tidal range and anthropic-induced changes. Their position and shape is subject to extreme events like flood river discharges and storms. They can also respond to processes that take place at larger time scales, as plate tectonics, sea level rise or even climatological patterns with teleconnections all over the world, as the well know North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) or El Ni&amp;#241;o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). This is the case of the Douro river mouth sand spit located on the northern coast of Portugal. This naturally dynamic sand spit, which has moved landwards over the past decades, has caused frequent nuisance to navigation, affecting width and depth of the navigation channel. Therefore, a breakwater was constructed in an attempt to stabilise the sand spit and the estuary inlet.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Validated hydrodynamic numerical models (openTELEMAC-MASCARET and Delft3D) of the Douro river estuary have demonstrated ability to accurately describe the estuarine hydrodynamic patterns and water elevation under extreme flood conditions. Model results showed that for higher river flow discharges the sand spit is partially inundated.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In this work a morphodynamic model (Delft3D) of the estuary was implemented to assess both the morphodynamics of the sand spit under extreme events, including the effect of sea level rise due to climate change, and the variation of extreme water levels along the estuary due to spit erosional processes that can occur during flood events.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Preliminary results show that the sand spit will be locally eroded for the higher river flood discharges, forming a two-secondary-channels system, with one channel located near the breakwater&amp;#8217;s southern extremity and the other, narrower, near the south bank. Associated with these two channels, two depositional bars will be formed in front of the channels at the coastal platform. However, the inner immersed sand spit will be suffering a sedimentation process for all of the simulated scenarios.     Exocomet signatures around the A-shell star Φ\Phi Leo?

    We present an intensive monitoring of high-resolution spectra of the Ca {\sc ii} K line in the A7IV shell star Φ\Phi Leo at very short (minutes, hours), short (night to night), and medium (weeks, months) timescales. The spectra show remarkable variable absorptions on timescales of hours, days, and months. The characteristics of these sporadic events are very similar to most that are observed toward the debris disk host star β\beta Pic, which are commonly interpreted as signs of the evaporation of solid, comet-like bodies grazing or falling onto the star. Therefore, our results suggest the presence of solid bodies around Φ\Phi Leo. To our knowledge, with the exception of β\beta Pic, our monitoring has the best time resolution at the mentioned timescales for a star with events attributed to exocomets. Assuming the cometary scenario and considering the timescales of our monitoring, our results indicate that Φ\Phi Leo presents the richest environment with comet-like events known to date, second only to β\beta Pic.Comment: A&A letters, proof-correcte

    Identification of H2_2CCC as a diffuse interstellar band carrier

    We present strong evidence that the broad, diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) at 4881 and 5450\,\AA are caused by the B\,^1B1_1\,\leftarrow\,X\,^1A1_1 transition of H2_2CCC (l-C3_3H2_2). The large widths of the bands are due to the short lifetime of the B\,^1B1_1 electronic state. The bands are predicted from absorption measurements in a neon matrix and observed by cavity ring-down in the gas phase and show exact matches to the profiles and wavelengths of the two broad DIBs. The strength of the 5450\,\AA DIB leads to a l-C3_3H2_2 column density of 5×1014\sim5\times10^{14} cm2^{-2} towards HD\,183143 and 2×1014\sim2\times10^{14}\,cm2^{-2} to HD\,206267. Despite similar values of EE(BVB-V), the 4881 and 5450\,\AA DIBs in HD\,204827 are less than one third their strength in HD\,183143, while the column density of interstellar C3_3 is unusually high for HD\,204827 but undetectable for HD\,183143. This can be understood if C3_3 has been depleted by hydrogenation to species such as l-C3_3H2_2 towards HD\,183143. There are also three rotationally resolved sets of triplets of l-C3_3H2_2 in the 6150-6330\,\AA region. Simulations, based on the derived spectroscopic constants and convolved with the expected instrumental and interstellar line broadening, show credible coincidences with sharp, weak DIBs for the two observable sets of triplets. The region of the third set is too obscured by the α\alpha-band of telluric O2_2.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figure
