Deviations from plastic barriers in Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta} thin films

Resistive transitions of an epitaxial Bi2_2Sr2_2CaCu2_2O8+δ_{8+\delta} thin film were measured in various magnetic fields (HcH\parallel c), ranging from 0 to 22.0 T. Rounded curvatures of low resistivity tails are observed in Arrhenius plot and considered to relate to deviations from plastic barriers. In order to characterize these deviations, an empirical barrier form is developed, which is found to be in good agreement with experimental data and coincide with the plastic barrier form in a limited magnetic field range. Using the plastic barrier predictions and the empirical barrier form, we successfully explain the observed deviations.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures; PRB 71, 052502 (2005

U-Compare bio-event meta-service: compatible BioNLP event extraction services

    Get PDF
AbstractBackgroundBio-molecular event extraction from literature is recognized as an important task of bio text mining and, as such, many relevant systems have been developed and made available during the last decade. While such systems provide useful services individually, there is a need for a meta-service to enable comparison and ensemble of such services, offering optimal solutions for various purposes.ResultsWe have integrated nine event extraction systems in the U-Compare framework, making them inter-compatible and interoperable with other U-Compare components. The U-Compare event meta-service provides various meta-level features for comparison and ensemble of multiple event extraction systems. Experimental results show that the performance improvements achieved by the ensemble are significant. ConclusionsWhile individual event extraction systems themselves provide useful features for bio text mining, the U-Compare meta-service is expected to improve the accessibility to the individual systems, and to enable meta-level uses over multiple event extraction systems such as comparison and ensemble. This research was partially supported by KAKENHI 18002007 [YK, MM, JDK, SP, TO, JT]; JST PRESTO and KAKENHI 21500130 [YK]; the Academy of Finland and computational resources were provided by CSC -- IT Center for Science Ltd [JB, FG]; the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) [SVL]; UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences, Research Council (BBSRC project BB/G013160/1 Automated Biological Event Extraction from the Literature for Drug Discovery) and JISC, National Centre for Text Mining [SA]; the Spanish grant BIO2010-17527 [MN, APM]; NIH Grant U54 DA021519 [AO, DRR]Peer Reviewe

When Learners Surpass Their Models: Mathematical Modeling of Learning from an Inconsistent Source

It has been reported in the literature that both adults and children can, to a different degree, modify and regularize the often-inconsistent linguistic input they receive. We present a new algorithm to model and investigate the learning process of a learner mastering a set of (grammatical or lexical) forms from an inconsistent source. The algorithm is related to reinforcement learning and drift-diffusion models of decision making, and possesses several psychologically relevant properties such as fidelity, robustness, discounting, and computational simplicity. It demonstrates how a learner can successfully learn from or even surpass its imperfect source. We use the data collected by Singleton and Newport (Cognit Psychol 49(4):370-407, 2004) on the performance of a 7-year-boy Simon, who mastered the American Sign Language (ASL) by learning it from his parents, both of whom were imperfect speakers of ASL. We show that the algorithm possesses a frequency boosting property, whereby the frequency of the most common form of the source is increased by the learner. We also explain several key features of Simon's ASL. © 2014 Society for Mathematical Biology

Metal barrier induced damage in self-assembly based organosilica low-k dielectrics and its reduction by organic template residues

© 2019 Elsevier B.V. This study describes the damage caused by physical vapor deposition of TaN/Ta barriers on porous self-assembled organosilica low-k dielectrics for IC applications. It is demonstrated that the ion bombardment associated with TaN layer sputtering strongly influences the metal species in-diffusion and modifies the bulk dielectric and pore sealing characteristics. The modulation of the pore structure via controlled decomposition of the organic template, prior to the barrier deposition step, allows to mitigate this damage. The reduction of open porosity, from nominal 39% down to 26%, is realized by partial retention of the sacrificial organic porogen phase in the pores of the low-k dielectric, resulting in the suppression of deep Ta penetration and in the recovery of pore sealing. This approach is successfully tested in a 45 nm half-pitch damascene vehicle. The compatibility of the organic template residues with the subsequent steps of the interconnects integration process flow, such as hard-mask deposition and patterning, are discussed.status: publishe
