Hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy (HPO) is a rare clinical disease in the dog, secondary to spaceoccuping masses inside the thoracic cavity (neoplasms, abcesses, etc.) and it's characterized by neoformation of periosteal bone affecting mainly the distallimbs. The authors review the physiopathology of the disease and describe one clinical case of hypertrophic pulmonary osteoarthropathy (clinical state, radiology, blood and urine analysis, necropsy results and histologic conclusions) associated with megaesofagus, condition not yet described associated to HPO
Dynamic magnetic properties of amorphous Fe80B20 thin films and their relation to interfaces
We present a ferromagnetic resonance study of the dynamic properties of a set of amorphous Fe-B films deposited on Corning Glass® and MgO (001) substrates, either with or without capping. We show that the in plane anisotropy of the MgO grown films contains both uniaxial and biaxial components whereas it is just uniaxial for those grown on glass. The angular dependence of the linewidth strongly differs in terms of symmetry and magnitude depending on the substrate and capping. We discuss the role of the interfaces on the magnetization damping and the generation of the anisotropy. We obtained values of the intrinsic damping parameters comparable to the lowest ones reported for amorphous films of similar compositions
Intermittency at critical transitions and aging dynamics at edge of chaos
We recall that, at both the intermittency transitions and at the Feigenbaum
attractor in unimodal maps of non-linearity of order , the dynamics
rigorously obeys the Tsallis statistics. We account for the -indices and the
generalized Lyapunov coefficients that characterize the
universality classes of the pitchfork and tangent bifurcations. We identify the
Mori singularities in the Lyapunov spectrum at the edge of chaos with the
appearance of a special value for the entropic index . The physical area of
the Tsallis statistics is further probed by considering the dynamics near
criticality and glass formation in thermal systems. In both cases a close
connection is made with states in unimodal maps with vanishing Lyapunov
coefficients.Comment: Proceedings of: STATPHYS 2004 - 22nd IUPAP International Conference

Resonant Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein condensates
We study double-barrier interfaces separating regions of asymptotically
subsonic and supersonic flow of Bose condensed atoms. These setups contain at
least one black hole sonic horizon from which the analog of Hawking radiation
should be generated and emitted against the flow in the subsonic region.
Multiple coherent scattering by the double-barrier structure strongly modulates
the transmission probability of phonons, rendering it very sensitive to their
frequency. As a result, resonant tunneling occurs with high probability within
a few narrow frequency intervals. This gives rise to highly non-thermal spectra
with sharp peaks. We find that these peaks are mostly associated to decaying
resonances and only occasionally to dynamical instabilities. Even at achievable
nonzero temperatures, the radiation peaks can be dominated by the spontaneous
emission, i.e. enhanced zero-point fluctuations, and not, as often in analog
models, by stimulated emission.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, revised versio
Infinite ergodic theory and Non-extensive entropies
We bring into account a series of result in the infinite ergodic theory that
we believe that they are relevant to the theory of non-extensive entropie
On some entropy functionals derived from R\'enyi information divergence
We consider the maximum entropy problems associated with R\'enyi -entropy,
subject to two kinds of constraints on expected values. The constraints
considered are a constraint on the standard expectation, and a constraint on
the generalized expectation as encountered in nonextensive statistics. The
optimum maximum entropy probability distributions, which can exhibit a
power-law behaviour, are derived and characterized. The R\'enyi entropy of the
optimum distributions can be viewed as a function of the constraint. This
defines two families of entropy functionals in the space of possible expected
values. General properties of these functionals, including nonnegativity,
minimum, convexity, are documented. Their relationships as well as numerical
aspects are also discussed. Finally, we work out some specific cases for the
reference measure and recover in a limit case some well-known entropies
Interventions of computerized psychotherapies for depression in Primary Care in Spain
Currently, depression is a global health problem recognized by the WHO. The prevalence of this pathology in Primary Care is estimated at 19.5% worldwide, and 20.2% in Spain. In addition, the current intervention policies and protocols involve significant costs, both personal and economic, for people suffering from this disorder, as well as for society in general. On the other hand, the relapse rates after pharmacological interventions that are currently applied and the lack of effective specialized attention in mental health services reflect the need to develop new therapeutic strategies that are more accessible and profitable. Therefore, one of the proposals that are being investigated in different parts of the world is the design and evaluation of therapeutic protocols applied through Information and Communication Technologies, especially through the Internet and computer programs. The objective of this work was to present the current situation in Spain regarding the use of these interventions for the treatment of depression in Primary Care. The main conclusion is that although there is scientific evidence on the effectiveness of these programs, there are still important barriers that hinder their application in the public system, and also the need to develop implementation studies that facilitate the transition from research to clinical practice
Relevance of d-D interactions on neutron and tritium production in IFMIF-EVEDA accelerator prototype
In the IFMIF-EVEDA accelerator prototype, deuterium is implanted in the components due to beam losses and in the beam dump, where the beam is stopped. The interaction of the deuterons with the deuterium previously implanted leads to the production of neutrons and tritium, which are important issues for radioprotection and safety analysis. A methodology to assess these production pathways in more realistic approach has been developed. The new tools and their main achievement are: (i) an “effective diffusivity coefficient” (deduced from available experimental data) that enables simulation of the diffusion phase, and (ii) the MCUNED code (able to handle deuteron transport libraries) allows to simulate the transport-slowdown of deuteron/tritium (to get the concentration profiles) and the neutron/tritium productions from d-Cu and d-D for up to 9 MeV incident deuteron. The results with/without theses tools are presented and their effect on the relevance of d-D sources versus d-Cu is evaluated
A low-intensity internet-based intervention focused on the promotion of positive affect for the treatment of depression in Spanish primary care: Secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial
Background: A large number of low-intensity Internet-based interventions (IBIs) for the treatment of depression have emerged in Primary Care; most of them focused on decreasing negative emotions. However, recent studies have highlighted the importance of addressing positive affect (PA) as well. This study is a secondary analysis of a randomized control trial. We examine the role of an IBI focused on promoting PA in patients with depression in Primary Care (PC). The specific objectives were to explore the profile of the patients who benefit the most and to analyze the change mechanisms that predict a significantly greater improvement in positive functioning measures.
Methods: 56 patients were included. Measures of depression, affect, well-being, health-related quality of life, and health status were administered.
Results: Participants who benefited the most were those who had lower incomes and education levels and worse mental health scores and well-being at baseline (7.9%–39.5% of explained variance). Improvements in depression severity and PA were significant predictors of long-term change in well-being, F (3, 55) = 17.78, p < 0.001, R2 = 47.8%.
Conclusions: This study highlights the importance of implementing IBIs in PC and the relevance of PA as a key target in Major Depressive Disorder treatment
