Effect of torso morphology on maximum hydrodynamic resistance in front crawl swimming
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of torso morphology on maximum instantaneous hydrodynamic resistance in front crawl swimming. Outlines of the torso in the frontal and anteroposterior planes were calculated from photographic images to determine continuous form gradients (m/m) for the anterior, posterior and lateral aspects of the torso. Torso cross-sectional areas at each vertical sample (0.001 m) were used to calculate maximal rate of change in cross-sectional area (m2/m) in the chest-waist and waist-hip segments. During the non-propulsive hand phase in middle-long distance front crawl, kicking propulsion is negligible and therefore the net force is equal to the drag. Drag coefficients were calculated at the instant of maximum horizontal deceleration of centre of mass during the non-propulsive hand phase of 400 m pace front crawl. Maximal rate of change in cross-sectional area (r = 0.44, p = 0.014) and posterior form gradient (r = 0.50, p = 0.006) of the waist-hip torso segment had moderate positive correlations with the maximal drag coefficient. A regression model including these variables explained 41% of the variance (p = 0.001). Indentation at the waist and curvature of the buttocks may result in greater drag force and influence swimming performance
Understanding the Effects of Training on Underwater Undulatory Swimming Performance and Kinematics
In swimming, the underwater phase after the start and turn comprises gliding and dolphin kicking, with the latter also known as underwater undulatory swimming (UUS). Swimming performance is highly dependent on the underwater phase; therefore, understanding the training effects in UUS and underwater gliding can be critical for swimmers and coaches. Further, the development of technique in young swimmers can lead to exponential benefits in an athlete’s career. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a training protocol on UUS and underwater gliding performance and kinematics in young swimmers. Seventeen age group swimmers (boys = 10, girls = 7) performed maximal UUS and underwater gliding efforts before and after a seven-week training protocol. Time to reach 10 m; intra-cyclic mean, peak, and minimum velocities; and gliding performance improved significantly after the training protocol. The UUS performance improvement was mostly produced by an improvement of the upbeat execution, together with a likely reduction of swimmers’ hydrodynamic drag. Despite the changes in UUS and gliding, performance was also likely influenced by growth. The findings from this study highlight kinematic variables that can be used to understand and quantify changes in UUS and gliding performance
PBjam: A Python package for automating asteroseismology of solar-like oscillators
Asteroseismology is an exceptional tool for studying stars by using the
properties of observed modes of oscillation. So far the process of performing
an asteroseismic analysis of a star has remained somewhat esoteric and
inaccessible to non-experts. In this software paper we describe PBjam, an
open-source Python package for analyzing the frequency spectra of solar-like
oscillators in a simple but principled and automated way. The aim of PBjam is
to provide a set of easy-to-use tools to extract information about the radial
and quadrupole oscillations in stars that oscillate like the Sun, which may
then be used to infer bulk properties such as stellar mass, radius and age or
even structure. Asteroseismology and its data analysis methods are becoming
increasingly important as space-based photometric observatories are producing a
wealth of new data, allowing asteroseismology to be applied in a wide range of
contexts such as exoplanet, stellar structure and evolution, and Galactic

Effects of insulin on intracellular GLUT4 vesicles in adipocytes: Evidence for a secretory mode of regulation
The facilitative glucose transporter, GLUT4 undergoes insulin-dependent movement to the cell surface in adipocytes, The magnitude of the insulin effect is much greater for CLUT4 than other recycling proteins such as the CD-MPR, In the present study we have studied the colocalisation of these proteins in adipocytes in an effort to explain this selective insulin-dependent recruitment of CLUT4, Using immunofluorescence microscopy or immuno-EM on 3T3-L1 adipocytes we find that there is considerable colocalisation between these proteins particularly within the area of the TGN, However, the distribution of CD-MPR was not significantly effected by insulin. The insulin-dependent recruitment of GLUT4 was concomitant with a selective decrease in GLUT4 labelling of cytoplasmic vesicles whereas the amount of CLUT4 in the TGN region (approx. 50% of total GLUT4) was relatively unaffected. To explore the possibility that the cytoplasmic GLUT4(+) vesicles represent an intracellular insulin-responsive storage compartment we performed quantitative immuno-EM on whole mounts of intracellular vesicles isolated from basal and insulin-stimulated adipocytes. These studies revealed that: (1) GLUT4 and CD-MPR were concentrated in small (30-200 nm) vesicles at a labelling density of 1-20+ gold particles/vesicle; (2) there was significant overlap between both proteins in that 70% of the total GLUT4 pool colocalised with CD-MPR; (3) a significant amount of GLUT4 (approx, 50% of total) was found in a subpopulation of vesicles that contained as little as 5% of the total CD-MPR pool; (4) the GLUT4(+)/CD-MPR(-) vesicles were highly insulin-responsive, and (5) the total number of GLUT4(+) vesicles, but not CD-MPR(+) vesicles, decreased by approx. 30% in response to insulin treatment. These data are consistent with a model in which GLUT4 is selectively sorted into a vesicular compartment in adipocytes that is recruited to the plasma membrane by insulin stimulation
Emergency treatment with levetiracetam or phenytoin in status epilepticus in children-the EcLiPSE study: Study protocol for a randomised controlled trial
© The Author(s). 2017. Background: Convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) is the most common life-threatening neurological emergency in childhood. These children are also at risk of significant morbidity, with acute and chronic impact on the family and the health and social care systems. The current recommended first-choice, second-line treatment in children aged 6 months and above is intravenous phenytoin (fosphenytoin in the USA), although there is a lack of evidence for its use and it is associated with significant side effects. Emerging evidence suggests that intravenous levetiracetam may be effective as a second-line agent for CSE, and fewer adverse effects have been described. This trial therefore aims to determine whether intravenous phenytoin or levetiracetam is more effective, and safer, in treating childhood CSE. Methods/design: This is a phase IV, multi-centre, parallel group, randomised controlled, open-label trial. Following treatment for CSE with first-line treatment, children with ongoing seizures are randomised to receive either phenytoin (20 mg/kg, maximum 2 g) or levetiracetam (40 mg/kg, maximum 2.5 g) intravenously. The primary outcome measure is the cessation of all visible signs of CSE as determined by the treating clinician. Secondary outcome measures include the need for further anti-seizure medications or rapid sequence induction for ongoing CSE, admission to critical care areas, and serious adverse reactions. Patients are recruited without prior consent, with deferred consent sought at an appropriate time for the family. The primary analysis will be by intention-to-treat. The primary outcome is a time to event outcome and a sample size of 140 participants in each group will have 80% power to detect an increase in CSE cessation rates from 60% to 75%. Our total sample size of 308 randomised and treated participants will allow for 10% loss to follow-up. Discussion: This clinical trial will determine whether phenytoin or levetiracetam is more effective as an intravenous second-line agent for CSE, and provide evidence for management recommendations. In addition, this trial will also provide data on which of these therapies is safer in this setting
Queer Youth and the Culture Wars: From Classroom to Courtroom in Australia, Canada and the United States
This article builds on Lugg\u27s (2006) discussion of surveillance in public schools and how queer youth are resisting schools\u27 current efforts to regulate sexual orientation and gender expression in the U.S. and internationally. Legal complaints initiated by queer youth against their schools for harassment and access to extra-curricular activities are discussed. The number of cases in the past five years has increased significantly and the courts are siding with the youth and their allies, demonstrating that queer youth are significantly impacting the dismantling of heteronormative regulatory regimes and improving the school experiences for themselves and queer adults
A prospective observational study to assess the diagnostic accuracy of clinical decision rules for children presenting to emergency departments after head injuries (protocol): The Australasian Paediatric Head Injury Rules Study (APHIRST)
Background: Head injuries in children are responsible for a large number of emergency department visits. Failure to identify a clinically significant intracranial injury in a timely fashion may result in long term neurodisability and death. Whilst cranial computed tomography (CT) provides rapid and definitive identification of intracranial injuries, it is resource intensive and associated with radiation induced cancer. Evidence based head injury clinical decision rules have been derived to aid physicians in identifying patients at risk of having a clinically significant intracranial injury. Three rules have been identified as being of high quality and accuracy: the Canadian Assessment of Tomography for Childhood Head Injury (CATCH) from Canada, the Children's Head Injury Algorithm for the Prediction of Important Clinical Events (CHALICE) from the UK, and the prediction rule for the identification of children at very low risk of clinically important traumatic brain injury developed by the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) from the USA. This study aims to prospectively validate and compare the performance accuracy of these three clinical decision rules when applied outside the derivation setting.Methods/design: This study is a prospective observational study of children aged 0 to less than 18 years presenting to 10 emergency departments within the Paediatric Research in Emergency Departments International Collaborative (PREDICT) research network in Australia and New Zealand after head injuries of any severity. Predictor variables identified in CATCH, CHALICE and PECARN clinical decision rules will be collected. Patients will be managed as per the treating clinicians at the participating hospitals. All patients not undergoing cranial CT will receive a follow up call 14 to 90 days after the injury. Outcome data collected will include results of cranial CTs (if performed) and details of admission, intubation, neurosurgery and death. The performance accuracy of each of the rules will be assessed using rule specific outcomes and inclusion and exclusion criteria.Discussion: This study will allow the simultaneous comparative application and validation of three major paediatric head injury clinical decision rules outside their derivation setting.Trial registration: The study is registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ANZCTR)- ACTRN12614000463673 (registered 2 May 2014). © 2014 Babl et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd
Large-Scale Selective Sweep among Segregation Distorter Chromosomes in African Populations of Drosophila melanogaster
Segregation Distorter (SD) is a selfish, coadapted gene complex on chromosome 2 of Drosophila melanogaster that strongly distorts Mendelian transmission; heterozygous SD/SD+ males sire almost exclusively SD-bearing progeny. Fifty years of genetic, molecular, and theory work have made SD one of the best-characterized meiotic drive systems, but surprisingly the details of its evolutionary origins and population dynamics remain unclear. Earlier analyses suggested that the SD system arose recently in the Mediterranean basin and then spread to a low, stable equilibrium frequency (1–5%) in most natural populations worldwide. In this report, we show, first, that SD chromosomes occur in populations in sub-Saharan Africa, the ancestral range of D. melanogaster, at a similarly low frequency (∼2%), providing evidence for the robustness of its equilibrium frequency but raising doubts about the Mediterranean-origins hypothesis. Second, our genetic analyses reveal two kinds of SD chromosomes in Africa: inversion-free SD chromosomes with little or no transmission advantage; and an African-endemic inversion-bearing SD chromosome, SD-Mal, with a perfect transmission advantage. Third, our population genetic analyses show that SD-Mal chromosomes swept across the African continent very recently, causing linkage disequilibrium and an absence of variability over 39% of the length of the second chromosome. Thus, despite a seemingly stable equilibrium frequency, SD chromosomes continue to evolve, to compete with one another, or evade suppressors in the genome
Variation in treatment of acute childhood wheeze in emergency departments of the United Kingdom and Ireland: An international survey of clinician practice

Objective: National clinical guidelines for childhood wheeze exist, yet despite being one of the most common reasons for childhood emergency department (ED) attendance, signi ficant variation in practice occurs in other settings. We, therefore, evaluated practice variations of ED clinicians in the UK and Ireland. Design: Two-stage survey undertaken in March 2013. Stage one examined department practice and stage two assessed ED consultant practice in acute childhood wheeze. Questions interrogated pharmacological and other management strategies, including inhaled and intravenous therapies. Setting and participants: Member departments of Paediatric Emergency Research in the United Kingdom and Ireland and ED consultants treating children with acute wheeze. Results: 30 EDs and 183 (81%) clinicians responded. 29 (97%) EDs had wheeze guidelines and 12 (40%) had care pathways. Variation existed between clinicians in dose, timing and frequency of inhaled bronchodilators across severities. When escalating to intravenous bronchodilators, 99 (54%) preferred salbutamol first line, 52 (28%) magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) and 27 (15%) aminophylline. 87 (48%) administered intravenous bronchodilators sequentially and 30 (16%) concurrently, with others basing approach on case severity. 146 (80%) continued inhaled therapy after commencing intravenous bronchodilators. Of 170 who used intravenous salbutamol, 146 (86%) gave rapid boluses, 21 (12%) a longer loading dose and 164 (97%) an ongoing infusion, each with a range of doses and durations. Of 173 who used intravenous MgSO4, all used a bolus only. 41 (24%) used non-invasive ventilation. Conclusions: Signi ficant variation in ED consultant management of childhood wheeze exists despite the presence of national guidance. This reflects the lack of evidence in key areas of childhood wheeze and emphasises the need for further robust multicentre research studies
The Star Formation Reference Survey. I. Survey Description and Basic Data
Star formation is arguably the most important physical process in the cosmos.
It is a fundamental driver of galaxy evolution and the ultimate source of most
of the energy emitted by galaxies. A correct interpretation of star formation
rate (SFR) measures is therefore essential to our understanding of galaxy
formation and evolution. Unfortunately, however, no single SFR estimator is
universally available or even applicable in all circumstances: the numerous
galaxies found in deep surveys are often too faint (or too distant) to yield
significant detections with most standard SFR measures, and until now there
have been no global, multi-band observations of nearby galaxies that span all
the conditions under which star-formation is taking place. To address this need
in a systematic way, we have undertaken a multi-band survey of all types of
star-forming galaxies in the local Universe. This project, the Star Formation
Reference Survey (SFRS), is based on a statistically valid sample of 369 nearby
galaxies that span all existing combinations of dust temperature, SFR, and
specific SFR. Furthermore, because the SFRS is blind with respect to AGN
fraction and environment it serves as a means to assess the influence of these
factors on SFR. Our panchromatic global flux measurements (including GALEX
FUV+NUV, SDSS ugriz, 2MASS JHKs, Spitzer 3-8{\mu}m, and others) furnish uniform
SFR measures and the context in which their reliability can be assessed. This
paper describes the SFRS survey strategy, defines the sample, and presents the
