On the ground electronic states of copper silicide and its ions
The low-lying electronic states of SiCu, SiCu^+, and SiCu^− have been studied using a variety of high-level ab initio techniques. As expected on the basis of simple orbital occupancy and bond forming for Si(s^2p^2)+Cu(s^1) species, ^2Π_r, ^1Σ^+, and ^3Σ^− states were found to be the ground electronic states for SiCu, SiCu^+, and SiCu^−, respectively; the ^2Π_r state is not that suggested in most recent experimental studies. All of these molecules were found to be quite strongly bound although the bond lengths, bond energies, and harmonic frequencies vary slightly among them, as a result of the nonbonding character of the 2π-MO (molecular orbital) [composed almost entirely of the Si 3p-AO (atomic orbital)], the occupation of which varies from 0 to 2 within the ^1Σ^+, ^2Π_r, and ^3Σ^− series. The neutral SiCu is found to have bound excited electronic states of ^4Σ^−, ^2Δ, ^2Σ^+, and ^2Π_i symmetry lying 0.5, 1.2, 1.8, and 3.2 eV above the ^2Π_r ground state. It is possible but not yet certain that the ^2Π_i state is, in fact, the “B state” observed in the recent experimental studies by Scherer, Paul, Collier, and Saykally
Doppler-beaming in the Kepler light curve of LHS 6343 A
Context. Kepler observations revealed a brown dwarf eclipsing the M-type star
LHS 6343 A with a period of 12.71 days. In addition, an out-of-eclipse light
modulation with the same period and a relative semi-amplitude of 2 x 10^-4 was
observed showing an almost constant phase lag to the eclipses produced by the
brown dwarf. In a previous work, we concluded that this was due to the light
modulation induced by photospheric active regions in LHS 6343 A. Aims. In the
present work, we prove that most of the out-of-eclipse light modulation is
caused by the Doppler-beaming induced by the orbital motion of the primary
star. Methods. We introduce a model of the Doppler-beaming for an eccentric
orbit and also considered the ellipsoidal effect. The data were fitted using a
Bayesian approach implemented through a Monte Carlo Markov chain method. Model
residuals were analysed by searching for periodicities using a Lomb-Scargle
periodogram. Results. For the first seven quarters of Kepler observations and
the orbit previously derived from the radial velocity measurements, we show
that the light modulation of the system outside eclipses is dominated by the
Doppler-beaming effect. A period search performed on the residuals shows a
significant periodicity of 42.5 +- 3.2 days with a false-alarm probability of 5
x 10^-4, probably associated with the rotational modulation of the primary

Complex genome evolution in Anopheles coluzzii associated with increased insecticide usage in Mali.
In certain cases, a species may have access to important genetic variation present in a related species via adaptive introgression. These novel alleles may interact with their new genetic background, resulting in unexpected phenotypes. In this study, we describe a selective sweep on standing variation on the X chromosome in the mosquito Anopheles coluzzii, a principal malaria vector in West Africa. This event may have been influenced by the recent adaptive introgression of the insecticide resistance gene known as kdr from the sister species Anopheles gambiae. Individuals carrying both kdr and a nearly fixed X-linked haplotype, encompassing at least four genes including the P450 gene CYP9K1 and the cuticular protein CPR125, have rapidly increased in relative frequency. In parallel, a reproductively isolated insecticide-susceptible A. gambiae population (Bamako form) has been driven to local extinction, likely due to strong selection from increased insecticide-treated bed net usage
Cavity ringdown laser absorption spectroscopy and time-of-flight mass spectroscopy of jet-cooled silver silicides
The cavity ringdown technique has been employed for the first spectroscopic characterization of the AgSi molecule, which is generated in a pulsed laser vaporization plasma reactor. A total of 20 rovibronic bands between 365 and 385 nm have been measured and analyzed to yield molecular properties for the X, B, and C 2Sigma states of AgSi. A time-of-flight mass spectrometer simultaneously monitors species produced in the molecular beam and has provided the first direct evidence for the existence of polyatomic silver silicides. Comparison of the AgSi data to our recent results for the CuSi diatom reveals very similar chemical bonding in the two coinage metal silicides, apparently dominated by covalent interactions
Apollo experience report: Lunar module environmental control subsystem
A functional description of the environmental control subsystem is presented. Development, tests, checkout, and flight experiences of the subsystem are discussed; and the design fabrication, and operational difficulties associated with the various components and subassemblies are recorded. Detailed information is related concerning design changes made to, and problems encountered with, the various elements of the subsystem, such as the thermal control water sublimator, the carbon dioxide sensing and control units, and the water section. The problems associated with water sterilization, water/glycol formulation, and materials compatibility are discussed. The corrective actions taken are described with the expection that this information may be of value for future subsystems. Although the main experiences described are problem oriented, the subsystem has generally performed satisfactorily in flight
Wild record of an apple snail in the Waikato River, Hamilton, New Zealand and their incidence in freshwater aquaria
We report the discovery of a single specimen of a live apple snail Pomacea diffusa Blume 1957 (Ampullariidae: Prosobranchia), from the Waikato River, Hamilton city, central North Island, New Zealand. This species, along with the congeneric P. insularum, is imported for the aquarium trade, and its occurrence in the river likely stemmed from an aquarium release. A survey of 55 aquaria belonging to 43 hobbyists revealed 27 apple snails, with one owner having 22 snails. Assessment of environmental tolerances and impacts of P. diffusa, based largely on studies of the closely related and commonly confused congener P. bridgesii, suggests that direct habitat impacts by this species are likely to be minor. However, there could be indirect influences on native biodiversity through predation on eggs or competition for food supplies with other detritivorous species if densities were to become high. Water temperatures in the Waikato River below Hamilton (10-23˚C in 2009) may enable released individuals to persist for an extended period, and over summer may exceed the threshold required to enable breeding. However, population establishment would be most likely in locations where water is heated through geothermal influences or industrial cooling water discharges
A search for starlight reflected from HD 75289 b
We have used a doppler tomographic analysis to conduct a deep search for the
starlight reflected from the planetary companion to HD 75289. In 4 nights on
VLT2/UVES in January 2003, we obtained 684 high resolution echelle spectra with
a total integration time of 26 hours. We establish an upper limit on the
planet's geometric albedo p < 0.12 (to the 99.9% significance level) at the
most probable orbital inclination i ~ 60 degrees, assuming a grey albedo, a
Venus-like phase function and a planetary radius R_p = 1.6 R_Jup. We are able
to rule out some combinations of the predicted planetary radius and atmospheric

The Angular Momentum Evolution of Very Low Mass Stars
We present theoretical models of the angular momentum evolution of very low
mass stars (0.1 - 0.5 M_sun) and solar analogues (0.6 - 1.1 M_sun). We
investigate the effect of rotation on the effective temperature and luminosity
of these stars. We find that the decrease in T_eff and L can be significant at
the higher end of our mass range, but becomes negligible below 0.4 M_sun.
Formulae for relating T_eff to mass and v_rot are presented.
We compare our models to rotational data from young open clusters of
different ages to infer the rotational history of low mass stars, and the
dependence of initial conditions and rotational evolution on mass. We find that
the qualitative conclusions for stars below 0.6 M_sun do not depend on the
assumptions about internal angular momentum transport, which makes these low
mass stars ideal candidates for the study of the angular momentum loss law and
distribution of initial conditions. We find that neither models with solid body
nor differential rotation can simultaneously reproduce the observed stellar
spin down in the 0.6 to 1.1 M_sun mass range and for stars between 0.1 and 0.6
M_sun. The most likely explanation is that the saturation threshold drops more
steeply at low masses than would be predicted with a simple Rossby scaling. In
young clusters there is a systematic increase in the mean rotation rate with
decreased temperature below 3500 K (0.4 M_sun). This suggests either
inefficient angular momentum loss or mass-dependent initial conditions for

The resilience of indigenous knowledge in small-scale African agriculture: key drivers
The successful use of indigenous knowledge (IK) in development practice in rural Africa over the last couple of decades has proved to be elusive and disappointing. Using empirical field data from northern Malawi, this study suggests that the two key drivers for farmers in this area are household food security and the maintenance of soil fertility. Indigenous ways of knowing underpin the agricultural system which has been developed, rather than the adoption of more modern, ‘scientific’ ways, to deliver against these drivers. Such IKs, however, are deeply embedded in the economic, social and cultural environments in which they operate
