Biot theory and acoustical properties of high porosity fibrous materials and plastic foams
Experimental values of acoustic wave propagation constant and characteristic impedance in fibrous materials, and normal absorption for two plastic foams, were compared to theoretical predictions obtained with Biot's theory. The best agreement was observed for fibrous materials between Biot's theory and Delany and Bazley experiments for a nearly zero mass coupling parameter. For foams, the lambda/4 structure resonance effect on absorption was calculated by using four-pole modelling of the medium. A significant mass coupling parameter is then necessary for obtaining agreement between the behavior of the measured absorption coefficients and the theoretical predictions. It is shown how the formalism used for predicting foams absorption coefficients may be used for studying the acoustic behavior of multi-layered media
Stellar and Gas Kinematics in the core and bar regions of M100
Original paper can be found at http://www.virtualjournals.org/proceedings/confproceed/783.jsp Copyright American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2034969 [Full text of this article is not available in the UHRA]Two-dimensional maps of the stellar and gas kinematics of the bar and starbursting circumnuclear region in the barred spiral galaxy M100 are presented. In this progress report, we present maps of the total intensity, mean velocity and velocity dispersion for the stars and the gas. The gas velocity field shows significant kinematic signatures of gas streaming along the inner part of the bar, and across the miniature spiral arms in the nuclear pseudo-ring. The stellar velocity field, presented here for the first time, also shows non-circular motions. The gas velocity dispersion is notably smaller where the star formation occurs in the nuclear zone and HII regions. We outline our further plans with the data set.otherPeer reviewe
Interactions of UHE cosmic ray nuclei with radiation during acceleration: consequences on the spectrum and composition
In this paper, we study the diffusive shock acceleration of cosmic-ray
protons and nuclei, taking into account all the relevant interaction processes
with photon backgrounds. We investigate how the competition between protons and
nuclei is modified by the acceleration parameters such as the acceleration
rate, its rigidity dependence, the photon density and the confinement
capability of the sources. We find that in the case of interaction-limited
acceleration processes protons are likely to be accelerated to higher energies
than nuclei, whereas for confinement-limited acceleration nuclei are
accelerated to higher energies than protons. Finally, we discuss our results in
the context of possible astrophysical accelerators, and in the light of recent
cosmic-ray data.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures A few paragraphs and one figure added for

Development of sputtered techniques for thrust chambers
The 0.152 cm thick sputtered and copper deposits were electron beam welded to wrought copper. Tensile specimens were machined from the weld assemblies and tested at room temperature. Tensile strength approached the strength of wrought material. Elongations up to 25% were measured. Sputtered aluminum was used to fill 0.157 cm wide by 0.127 cm deep grooves in thrust chamber spool piece liners. The liners were closed out by sputtering copper from post and hollow cathodes
Dutch corporate liquidity mangement: New evidence on aggregation
In this paper we investigate Dutch corporate liquidity management in general, and target adjustment behaviour in particular. To this purpose, we use a simple error correction model of corporate liquidity holdings applied to firm-level data for the period 1977-1997. We confirm the existence of long-run liquidity targets at the firm level. We also find that changes in liquidity holdings are driven by short-run shocks as well as the urge to converge towards targeted liquidity levels. The rate of target convergence is higher when we include more firm-specific information in the target. This result supports the idea that increased precision in defining liquidity targets associates with a faster observed rate of target convergence. It also suggests that the slow speeds of adjustment obtained in many macro studies on money demand are artefacts of aggregation bias.corporate liquidity demand, precautionary liquidity
Percolation on random networks with arbitrary k-core structure
The k-core decomposition of a network has thus far mainly served as a
powerful tool for the empirical study of complex networks. We now propose its
explicit integration in a theoretical model. We introduce a Hard-core Random
Network model that generates maximally random networks with arbitrary degree
distribution and arbitrary k-core structure. We then solve exactly the bond
percolation problem on the HRN model and produce fast and precise analytical
estimates for the corresponding real networks. Extensive comparison with
selected databases reveals that our approach performs better than existing
models, while requiring less input information.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Development of sputtered techniques for thrust chambers
Procedures for closing out coolant passages in regeneratively cooled thrust chambers by triode sputtering, using post and hollow Cu-0.15 percent Zr cathodes are described. The effects of aluminum composite filler materials, substrate preparation, sputter cleaning, substrate bias current density and system geometry on closeout layer bond strength and structure are evaluated. High strength closeout layers were sputtered over aluminum fillers. The tensile strength and microstructure of continuously sputtered Cu-0.15 percent Zr deposits were determined. These continuous sputtered deposits were as thick as 0.75 cm. Tensile strengths were consistently twice as great as the strength of the material in wrought form
