Systems development: quality and safety of organic livestock products

Overview of fourth SAFO Workshop: . Ninety-eight delegates from 19 countries attended the 4th SAFO Workshop. Previous Workshops had focused on the production system but the plenary papers at this meeting focused specifically on food quality and safety of organic livestock products. The Workshop programme contained five formal plenary sessions including poster presentations, working group discussions and a field visits to a range of organic livestock farms. Finite Size Effects on the Optical Transitions in Quantum Rings under a Magnetic Field

We present a theoretical study of the energy spectrum of single electron and hole states in quantum dots of annular geometry under a high magnetic field along the ring axis in the frame of uncorrelated electron-hole theory. We predict the periodic disappearance of the optical emission of the electron-hole pair as the magnetic field increases, as a consequence of the finite height of the barriers. The model has been applied to semiconductor rings of various internal and external radii, giving as limiting cases the disk and antidot.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, LaTeX, published in Eur. Phys. J. Pion electroproduction in a nonrelativistic theory

A nonrelativistic effective theory to describe the electroproduction reaction of a single pion on the nucleon at leading order in the electromagnetic coupling is constructed. The framework is tailored to accurately describe the cusp generated by the pion and nucleon mass differences. The S- and P- wave multipole amplitudes at two loops for all four reaction channels are provided. As an application, a new low energy theorem is discussed.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur

Disorder induced Dirac-point physics in epitaxial graphene from temperature-dependent magneto-transport measurements

We report a study of disorder effects on epitaxial graphene in the vicinity of the Dirac point by magneto-transport. Hall effect measurements show that the carrier density increases quadratically with temperature, in good agreement with theoretical predictions which take into account intrinsic thermal excitation combined with electron-hole puddles induced by charged impurities. We deduce disorder strengths in the range 10.2 $\sim$ 31.2 meV, depending on the sample treatment. We investigate the scattering mechanisms and estimate the impurity density to be $3.0 \sim 9.1 \times 10^{10}$ cm$^{-2}$ for our samples. An asymmetry in the electron/hole scattering is observed and is consistent with theoretical calculations for graphene on SiC substrates. We also show that the minimum conductivity increases with increasing disorder potential, in good agreement with quantum-mechanical numerical calculations.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

Structure of self-assembled Mn atom chains on Si(001)

Mn has been found to self-assemble into atomic chains running perpendicular to the surface dimer reconstruction on Si(001). They differ from other atomic chains by a striking asymmetric appearance in filled state scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. This has prompted complicated structural models involving up to three Mn atoms per chain unit. Combining STM, atomic force microscopy and density functional theory we find that a simple necklace-like chain of single Mn atoms reproduces all their prominent features, including their asymmetry not captured by current models. The upshot is a remarkably simpler structure for modelling the electronic and magnetic properties of Mn atom chains on Si(001).Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
