Sending femtosecond pulses in circles: highly non-paraxial accelerating beams
We use caustic beam shaping on 100 fs pulses to experimentally generate
non-paraxial accelerating beams along a 60 degree circular arc, moving
laterally by 14 \mum over a 28 \mum propagation length. This is the highest
degree of transverse acceleration reported to our knowledge. Using diffraction
integral theory and numerical beam propagation simulations, we show that
circular acceleration trajectories represent a unique class of non-paraxial
diffraction-free beam profile which also preserves the femtosecond temporal
structure in the vicinity of the caustic
Low density instability in a nuclear Fermi liquid drop
The instability of a Fermi-liquid drop with respect to bulk density
distortions is considered. It is shown that the presence of the surface
strongly reduces the growth rate of the bulk instability of the finite
Fermi-liquid drop because of the anomalous dispersion term in the dispersion
relation. The instability growth rate is reduced due to the Fermi surface
distortions and the relaxation processes. The dependence of the bulk
instability on the multipolarity of the particle density fluctuations is

Modelling of the ICRF induced E x B convection in the scrape-off-layer of ASDEX Upgrade
In magnetic controlled fusion devices, plasma heating with radio-frequency (RF) waves in the ion cyclotron (IC) range of frequency relies on the electric field of the fast wave to heat the plasma. However, the slow wave can be generated parasitically. The electric field of the slow wave can induce large biased plasma potential (DC potential) through sheath rectification. The rapid variation of the rectified potential across the equilibrium magnetic field can cause significant convective transport (E x B drifts) in the scrape-off layer (SOL). In order to understand this phenomenon and reproduce the experiments, 3D realistic simulations are carried out with the 3D edge plasma fluid and kinetic neutral code EMC3-Eirene in ASDEX Upgrade. For this, we have added the prescribed drift terms to the EMC3 equations and verified the 3D code results against the analytical ones in cylindrical geometry. The edge plasma potential derived from the experiments is used to calculate the drift velocities, which are then treated as input fields in the code to obtain the final density distributions. Distal humerus fractures in patients over 65: Complications
SummaryIntroductionFractures of the distal humerus in patients over the age of 65 remain a therapeutic challenge. Treatment options include conservative treatment, internal fixation or total elbow arthroplasty. The complications of these different treatment options were evaluated in a multicentre study.Materials and methodsFour hundred and ninety-seven medical records were evaluated. A retrospective study was performed in 410 cases: 34 received conservative treatment, 289 internal fixation and 87 underwent total elbow arthroplasty. A prospective study was performed in 87 cases: 22 received conservative treatment, 53 internal fixation, and 12 underwent total elbow arthroplasty. Patients were evaluated after at least 6 months follow-up.ResultsThe rate of complications was 30% in the retrospective study and 29% in the prospective study. The rate of complications in the conservative treatment group was 60%, and the main complication was essentially malunion. The rate of complications was 44% in the internal fixation group and included neuropathies, mechanical failure or wound dehiscence. Although complications only developed in 23% of total elbow arthroplasties, they were often more severe than those following other treatments.DiscussionComplications develop in one out of three patients over 65 with distal humerus fractures. Three main types of complications were identified. Neuropathies especially of the ulnar nerve, especially during arthroplasty, must always be identified, the nerve requiring isolation and transposition. Bone complications, due principally to mechanical failure, were found following internal fixation. Despite technical progress, care must be taken not to favor excessive utilization of this treatment option in complex fractures on fragile bone. Although there were relatively fewer complications with total elbow arthroplasty they were more difficult to treat. Ossifications were frequent whatever the surgical option and can jeopardize the functional outcome.Level of evidenceLevel IV
Autonomy and forage grasses in goat farming of western France First results of a sociological survey
International audienceOur communication is based on the results of a multidisciplinary research (PSDR FLECHE-Fromages et Laits issus d'Élevages de Chèvres conduites avec de l'Herbe-2016-2020) which aims to study the potential of grass valorization in goat systems, with the dual objective of strengthening the economic resilience of farms and the social image of the dairy goat sector of Western France. The latter currently represent almost half of the national goat population and 58% of the milk supplied in France. The sociological aspect of the research concerns the representations, value systems, interests and constraint systems (technical, economic, etc.) that guide the practices of all the actors in the sector: farmers, upstream and downstream actors. The objective of this approach is to analyse, at all levels of the value chain, the incentives and obstacles to a possible transition to more grassy feeding systems. Based on 76 semi-directive interviews, this paper presents the first results of this survey by showing how contextual elements (socio-economic, professional, etc.) impact farmers' choices of practices. While, in principle, the whole goat sector seems to be converging towards an agro-ecological transition that ensures its sustainability, in practice, each of its actors is confronted with a system of constraints that limit actual developments. The articulation of these obstacles seems to lead to a kind of inertia, which prevents the adoption of practices that are nevertheless perceived as recommendable by most actors. Notre communication s'inscrit dans le cadre d'une recherche pluridisciplinaire (Programme PSDR-FLECHE-Fromages et Laits issus d'Élevages de Chèvres conduites avec de l'Herbe-2016-2020) qui vise à étudier le potentiel de valorisation de l'herbe dans les systèmes caprins, dans le double objectif de renforcer la résilience économique des exploitations et l'image sociale des filières caprines laitières de l'Ouest de la France. Ces dernières représentent actuellement près de la moitié de l'effectif national de chèvres et 58% du lait livré en France. Le volet sociologique de la recherche porte sur les représentations, les systèmes de valeurs, les intérêts et les systèmes de contraintes (techniques, économiques, etc.) qui orientent les pratiques de l'ensemble des acteurs de la filière : éleveurs, acteurs de l'amont et de l'aval. L'objectif de cette démarche est d'analyser, à tous les niveaux de la filière, les incitations et les freins à une éventuelle transition vers des systèmes alimentaires plus herbagers. A partir de 76 entretiens semi-directifs, ce papier présente les premiers résultats de cette enquête en montrant, notamment, comment les éléments contextuels (socio-économiques, professionnels, etc.) impactent les choix des pratiques des exploitants agricoles. Si, en principe, l'ensemble de la filière caprine semble converger vers une transition agroécologique qui en assure la durabilité, dans la pratique, chacun de ses acteurs est confronté à un univers de contraintes qui limitent les évolutions effectives. L'articulation des freins relevant des différents maillons de la filière, semble ainsi déboucher sur une sorte d'inertie, qui empêche l'adoption de pratiques pourtant perçues comme souhaitables par la plupart des acteurs. Generalized entropy and temperature in nuclear multifragmentation
In the framework of a 2D Vlasov model, we study the time evolution of the
"coarse-grained" Generalized Entropy (GE) in a nuclear system which undergoes a
multifragmentation (MF) phase transition. We investigate the GE both for the
gas and the fragments (surface and bulk part respectively). We find that the
formation of the surface causes the growth of the GE during the process of
fragmentation. This quantity then characterizes the MF and confirms the crucial
role of deterministic chaos in filling the new available phase-space: at
variance with the exact time evolution, no entropy change is found when the
linear response is applied. Numerical simulations were used also to extract
information about final temperatures of the fragments. From a fitting of the
momentum distribution with a Fermi-Dirac function we extract the temperature of
the fragments at the end of the process. We calculate also the gas temperature
by averaging over the available phase space. The latter is a few times larger
than the former, indicating a gas not in equilibrium. Though the model is very
schematic, this fact seems to be very general and could explain the discrepancy
found in experimental data when using the slope of light particles spectra
instead of the double ratio of isotope yields method in order to extract the
