Foot pedal operated fluid type exercising device

    Get PDF
A foot pedal operated exercising device is reported that contains a dynamometer formed of a pair of cylinders each containing a piston. The pistons are linked to each other. The upper portions of the two cylinders are joined together by a common opening to provide a common fluid reservoir and each piston is provided with a one way check valve to maintain an adequate supply of working fluid. Fluid from the driven cylinder is transmitted to the other cylinder through separate constant force spring biased valves each valve takes the predominant portion of the pressure drop thereby providing a constant force hydraulic dynamometer. A device is provided to determine the amount of movement of piston travel

Convergence analysis of energy conserving explicit local time-stepping methods for the wave equation

    Get PDF
Local adaptivity and mesh refinement are key to the efficient simulation of wave phenomena in heterogeneous media or complex geometry. Locally refined meshes, however, dictate a small time-step everywhere with a crippling effect on any explicit time-marching method. In [18] a leap-frog (LF) based explicit local time-stepping (LTS) method was proposed, which overcomes the severe bottleneck due to a few small elements by taking small time-steps in the locally refined region and larger steps elsewhere. Here a rigorous convergence proof is presented for the fully-discrete LTS-LF method when combined with a standard conforming finite element method (FEM) in space. Numerical results further illustrate the usefulness of the LTS-LF Galerkin FEM in the presence of corner singularities

"It's the real thing": performance and murder in Sweden.

The article investigates contemporary experimental theatre in Sweden. It sums up and probes the implications of Sju tre (1999), the most controversial theatre production in Sweden in modern times. Lars Nor'n, the playwright and director, staged a dialogue involving three real convicts, of whom two were outspoken Nazis. The article explores the uncertain boundaries between aesthetic, ethical, and political issues with ramifications regarding the wider public opinion in Sweden, on racism and crime. It is methodologically motivated by reception research, performativity and idealogical discourse. By virtue of its performative impact, the theatrical event proved to be directly linked with critical questions of democracy, although conceivably at the expense of the artistic integrity of the director and the theatre as creator of public opinion. The article points to a paradox of democracy whereby hate speech is at once allowed and unjustified in the theatre as national arena. The actors are described and analysed as parasites in a societal body, that in Sju tre, becomes politically epitomised

Post-Conviction Mediation of Rape Cases: Working within the Criminal Justice System to Achieve Well-Rounded Justice

    Get PDF
This Comment will focus on the steps that can be taken within our criminal justice system to help change the attitudes of police, prosecutors, judges, jurors, and legislators toward the crime of rape. It will particularly focus on how mediation can be used concurrently with the criminal courts system in order to achieve justice for all parties involved, victims as well as offender

The transition of flipped instruction : from professional development to classroom

    Get PDF
This action research study was designed to implement flipped classroom professional development for high school teachers, and investigate whether the flipped professional development could be transferred from the teacher learning into student learning. Over three months the teachers\u27 flipped professional development covered the flipped classroom model, differentiated group work, and the technologies needed to flip a lesson. Each of the seven participants created and delivered three flipped lessons in their classrooms. The major findings suggest that the flipped learning skills were transferred from professional development to practice (with the aid of instructional coaching.) Recommendations for further professional development on classroom expectations and more technology tools are presented. In conclusion, the flipped model skills can be transferred into the classroom setting

Determining size of drops in fuel mixture of internal combustion engines

    Get PDF
In compressorless Diesel engines and in explosion engines using fuels with high boiling points it is difficult to effect a good combustion of the fuel mixture. This report presents different methods for calculating the size and uniformity of fuel droplets and mixtures
