    Energy-dependent evolution in IC10 X-1: hard evidence for an extended corona and implications

    We have analyzed a ~130 ks XMM-Newton observation of the dynamically confirmed black hole + Wolf-Rayet (BH+WR) X-ray binary (XB) IC10 X-1, covering ~1 orbital cycle. This system experiences periodic intensity dips every ~35 hr. We find that energy-independent evolution is rejected at a >5σ level. The spectral and timing evolution of IC10 X-1 are best explained by a compact disk blackbody and an extended Comptonized component, where the thermal component is completely absorbed and the Comptonized component is partially covered during the dip. We consider three possibilities for the absorber: cold material in the outer accretion disk, as is well documented for Galactic neutron star (NS) XBs at high inclination; a stream of stellar wind that is enhanced by traveling through the L1 point; and a spherical wind. We estimated the corona radius (r ADC) for IC10 X-1 from the dip ingress to be ~106 km, assuming absorption from the outer disk, and found it to be consistent with the relation between r ADC and 1-30 keV luminosity observed in Galactic NS XBs that spans two orders of magnitude. For the other two scenarios, the corona would be larger. Prior BH mass (M BH) estimates range over 23-38 M ☉, depending on the inclination and WR mass. For disk absorption, the inclination, i, is likely to be ~60-80°, with M BH ~ 24-41 M ☉. Alternatively, the L1-enhanced wind requires i ~ 80°, suggesting ~24-33 M ☉. For a spherical absorber, i ~ 40°, and M BH ~ 50-65 M ☉

    Superallowed 0+ to 0+ nuclear beta decays: A new survey with precision tests of the conserved vector current hypothesis and the standard model

    A new critical survey is presented of all half-life, decay-energy and branching-ratio measurements related to 20 0+ to 0+ beta decays. Compared with our last review, there are numerous improvements: First, we have added 27 recently published measurements and eliminated 9 references; of particular importance, the new data include a number of high-precision Penning-trap measurements of decay energies. Second, we have used the recently improved isospin symmetry-breaking corrections. Third, our calculation of the statistical rate function now accounts for possible excitation in the daughter atom. Finally, we have re-examined the systematic uncertainty associated with the isospin symmetry-breaking corrections by evaluating the radial-overlap correction using Hartree-Fock radial wave functions and comparing the results with our earlier calculations, which used Saxon-Woods wave functions; the provision for systematic uncertainty has been changed as a consequence. The new corrected Ft values are impressively constant and their average, when combined with the muon liftime, yields the up-down quark-mixing element of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, V_{ud} = 0.97425(22). The unitarity test on the top row of the matrix becomes |V_{ud}|^2 + |V_{us}|^2 + |V_{ub}|^2 = 0.99995(61). Both V_{ud} and the unitarity sum have significantly reduced uncertainties compared with our previous survey, although the new value of V_{ud} is statistically consistent with the old one. From these data we also set limits on the possible existence of scalar interactions, right-hand currents and extra Z bosons. Finally, we discuss the priorities for future theoretical and experimental work with the goal of making the CKM unitarity test even more definitive.Comment: 36 pages, 11 tables, 9 figure

    The purpose of this study was to determine the effect that additional sleep health education, as well as recording amounts of nightly sleep had on the amounts of sleep and sense of daytime sleepiness, experienced by participants enrolled in a personal health class at a state university in the Pacific Northwest. Participants were divided into four groups, a control, a group that received sleep education only, a group that kept a sleep log only, and a group that received both interventions. Outcomes were assessed with a three day sleep recall, and using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). The students who received both interventions improved their sleep by over 50 minutes per nigh

    The spectra of galaxies in the near infrared atmospheric transmission windows are explored. Emission lines were detected due to molecular hydrogen, atomic hydrogen recombination lines, a line attributed to FEII, and a broad CO absorption feature. Lines due to H2 and FEII are especially strong in interacting and merging galaxies, but they were also detected in Seyferts and normal spirals. These lines appear to be shock excited. Multi-aperture measurements show that they emanate from regions as large as 15 kpc. It is argued that starbursts provide the most plausible and consistent model for the excitation of these lines, but the changes of relative line intensity of various species with aperture suggest that other excitation mechanisms are also operating in the outer regions of these galaxies

    The gatekeeper: individual differences are key in the chain from perception to behaviour

    A basic assumption in mainstream social cognition is that the path from perception to behaviour is often automatic and direct, as supported for example by several experimental studies showing that priming can lead directly to a congruent behaviour without any need of conscious awareness of the process. However, we argue that the priming of a goal or an object activates individual differences in automatic evaluations at the associative level that in turn are the key predictors of action (gatekeeper model). A study (n = 90) on the American stereotype is presented to support the model. The results show that individual differences of the American stereotype as assessed with the IAT predicts a relevant action (essay evaluation) but only under condition of priming. Broader implications for predictive validity of implicit measures are also discussed

    Expression of pheromone binding proteins during antennal development in the gypsy moth Lymantria dispar

    We have identified 2 olfactory specific proteins in the gypsy moth Lymantria dispar that are uniquely associated with the male antennae, the principal olfactory organs of this animal. These proteins were the major soluble protein components of the olfactory sensilla, present in equivalent amounts. Both proteins comigrated on SDS-PAGE, showing an apparent molecular mass of 15,000 Da but migrated separately on non-SDS-PAGE, indicating differences in net charge. N-terminal amino acid sequence analysis showed that the 2 proteins share 50% identity, indicating that they are genetically distinct homologs. Both proteins bound the L. dispar sexpheromone, associated with antisera prepared against the previously identified phermone-binding protein (PBP) of the moth Antheraea polyphemus, and shared sequence identity with the A. polyphemus PBP. These 2 proteins are therefore identified as L. dispar PBPs and are termed PBP1 and PBP2 based on their migration differences on non-SDS-PAGE. It is estimated that PBP1 and PBP2 are present in the sensilla lumen at a combined concentration of 13.4 mM. The expression of the L. dispar PBPs was examined during the 11 d development of the adult antenna. PBP1 and PBP2 were first detected by non-SDS-PAGE analysis and Coomassie blue staining 3 d before adult eclosion, on day A-3. Levels increased, reaching a plateau on day A-1 that continued into adult life. In vivo labeling studies indicated that the rate of PBP synthesis increased from A-3 to a plateau on A-2, where it remained into adult life. In vitro translations of antennal mRNAs indicated that translatable PBP mRNA was available at a very low level on day A-4, increased slightly on A-3 and dramatically on A-2, and remained at a high level into adult life. PBP mRNA represented the major translatable mRNA in the antenna during this period. It was estimated that the PBPs undergo a combined steady-state turnover of 8 x 10(7) molecules/hr/sensillum. Cursory in vivo and in vitro translation studies of antennal mRNA from A. polyphemus and Manduca sexta showed similar temporal patterns of PBP expression, suggesting that the L. dispar observations are general

    Data from the Einstein Observatory imaging proportional counter (IPC) and high resolution imager (HRI) were released on several CD-ROM sets. The sets released so far include pointed IPC and HRI observations in both simple image and detailed photon event list format, as well as the IPC slew survey. With the data on these CD-ROMS's the user can perform spatial analysis (e.g., surface brightness distributions), spectral analysis (with the IPC event lists), and timing analysis (with the IPC and HRI event lists). The next CD-ROM set will contain IPC unscreened data, allowing the user to perform custom screening to recover, for instance, data during times of lost aspect data or high particle background rates

    A new search strategy for microquasar candidates using NVSS/2MASS and XMM-Newton data

    Microquasars are ideal natural laboratories for understanding accretion/ejection processes, studying the physics of relativistic jets, and testing gravitational phenomena. Nevertheless, these objects are difficult to find in our Galaxy. The main goal of this work is to increase the number of known systems of this kind. We have developed an improved search strategy based on positional cross-identification with very restrictive selection criteria to find new MQs, taking advantage of more sensitive modern radio and X-ray data. We find 86 sources with positional coincidence in the NVSS/XMM catalogs at |b|<10 deg. Among them, 24 are well-known objects and the remaining 62 sources are unidentified. For the fully coincident sources, whenever possible, we analyzed color-color and hardness ratio diagrams and found that at least 3 of them display high-mass X-ray binary characteristics, making them potential microquasar candidates.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Beyond Consistency and Substitutability

    International audienceElimination of inconsistent values in instances of the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) conserves all solutions. Elimination of substitutable values conserves at least one solution. We show that certain values which are neither inconsistent nor substitutable can also be deleted while conserving at least one solution. This allows us to state novel rules for the elimination of values in binary CSP. From a practical point of view, we show that one such rule can be applied in the same asymptotic time complexity as neighbourhood substitution but is strictly stronger. An alternative to the elimination of values from domains is the elimination of variables. We give novel satisfiability-preserving variable elimination operations. In each case we show that if the instance is satisfiable, then a solution to the original instance can always be recovered in low-order polynomial time from a solution to the reduced instance
