Lady Gaga as (dis)simulacrum of monstrosity
Lady Gaga’s celebrity DNA revolves around the notion of monstrosity, an extensively
researched concept in postmodern cultural studies. The analysis that is offered in this
paper is largely informed by Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of monstrosity, as well as
by their approach to the study of sign-systems that was deployed in A Thousand
Plateaus. By drawing on biographical and archival visual data, with a focus on the
relatively underexplored live show, an elucidation is afforded of what is really monstrous
about Lady Gaga. The main argument put forward is that monstrosity as sign
seeks to appropriate the horizon of unlimited semiosis as radical alterity and openness
to signifying possibilities. In this context it is held that Gaga effectively delimits her
unique semioscape; however, any claims to monstrosity are undercut by the inherent
limits of a representationalist approach in sufficiently engulfing this concept. Gaga is
monstrous for her community insofar as she demands of her fans to project their
semiosic horizon onto her as a simulacrum of infinite semiosis. However, this simulacrum
may only be evinced in a feigned manner as a (dis)simulacrum. The analysis of
imagery from seminal live shows during 2011–2012 shows that Gaga’s presumed
monstrosity is more akin to hyperdifferentiation as simultaneous employment of
heterogeneous and potentially dissonant inter pares cultural representations. The article
concludes with a problematisation of audience effects in the light of Gaga’s adoption of
a schematic and post-representationalist strategy in the event of her strategy’s emulation
by competitive artists
What is the experience of receiving healthcare for neck pain?
This study used a descriptive phenomenological approach to describe the experience of finding and receiving health services for neck pain. Nineteen participants (18 females, 1 male) with neck pain (>3 months) were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire guide. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and coded. Two overarching themes described the experience: complexity in finding effective health care; and the need for informative, personalized, respectful communication. Complexity in finding effective health care was attributed to the variable approach and effectiveness of different health professionals, the need to experiment with care to find what works, the need to differentiate temporary versus permanent treatment effects, concerns about treatment side effects and the sense that financial factors influence personal treatment choices and provider behaviours. The need for informative, personalized, respectful communications was broken down into the following subthemes: the importance of being listened to, seen and believed; the need for useful information; and a desire to have outcomes formally tracked as a means of individualizing treatment. Overall, patients struggled to navigate the variable health services and providers that were available and that provided variable outcomes. They often did so through a trial and error approach. As such, patients remain open to unproven, even controversial treatment options. Research evidence was not a key ingredient in patient decision-making about accessing health services. The environmental, personal, health behavior factors interacted to contribute to health service utilization and would increase the burden of these for both the individual and society at large. The effectiveness of neck pain interventions is dependent on complex interactions between the context, individual, and health care provider, therefore, physiological responses cannot be considered as being distinct from these determinants
Towards constraints on the SUSY seesaw from flavour-dependent leptogenesis
We systematically investigate constraints on the parameters of the
supersymmetric type-I seesaw mechanism from the requirement of successful
thermal leptogenesis in the presence of upper bounds on the reheat temperature
of the early Universe. To this end, we solve the
flavour-dependent Boltzmann equations in the MSSM, extended to include
reheating. With conservative bounds on , leading to mildly
constrained scenarios for thermal leptogenesis, compatibility with observation
can be obtained for extensive new regions of the parameter space, due to
flavour-dependent effects. On the other hand, focusing on (normal) hierarchical
light and heavy neutrinos, the hypothesis that there is no CP violation
associated with the right-handed neutrino sector, and that leptogenesis
exclusively arises from the CP-violating phases of the matrix,
is only marginally consistent. Taking into account stricter bounds on
further suggests that (additional) sources of CP violation must
arise from the right-handed neutrino sector, further implying stronger

High Speed Isoelectric Focusing of Proteins Enabling Rapid Two-Dimensional Gel Electrophoresis
Heterogeneity in genetic admixture across different regions of Argentina
The population of Argentina is the result of the intermixing between several groups, including Indigenous American, European and African populations. Despite the commonly held idea that the population of Argentina is of mostly European origin, multiple studies have shown that this process of admixture had an impact in the entire Argentine population. In the present study we characterized the distribution of Indigenous American, European and African ancestry among individuals from different regions of Argentina and evaluated the level of discrepancy between self-reported grandparental origin and genetic ancestry estimates. A set of 99 autosomal ancestry informative markers (AIMs) was genotyped in a sample of 441 Argentine individuals to estimate genetic ancestry. We used non-parametric tests to evaluate statistical significance. The average ancestry for the Argentine sample overall was 65% European (95%CI: 63-68%), 31% Indigenous American (28-33%) and 4% African (3-4%). We observed statistically significant differences in European ancestry across Argentine regions [Buenos Aires province (BA) 76%, 95%CI: 73-79%; Northeast (NEA) 54%, 95%CI: 49-58%; Northwest (NWA) 33%, 95%CI: 21-41%; South 54%, 95%CI: 49-59%; p<0.0001] as well as between the capital and immediate suburbs of Buenos Aires city compared to more distant suburbs [80% (95%CI: 75-86%) versus 68% (95%CI: 58-77%), p = 0.01]. European ancestry among individuals that declared all grandparents born in Europe was 91% (95%CI: 88-94%) compared to 54% (95%CI: 51-57%) among those with no European grandparents (p<0.001). Our results demonstrate the range of variation in genetic ancestry among Argentine individuals from different regions in the country, highlighting the importance of taking this variation into account in genetic association and admixture mapping studies in this population
Conceptual Design and Structural Optimization of NASA Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) Hybrid Wing Body Aircraft
Simultaneously achieving the fuel consumption and noise reduction goals set forth by NASA's Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) project requires innovative and unconventional aircraft concepts. In response, advanced hybrid wing body (HWB) aircraft concepts have been proposed and analyzed as a means of meeting these objectives. For the current study, several HWB concepts were analyzed using the Hybrid wing body Conceptual Design and structural optimization (HCDstruct) analysis code. HCDstruct is a medium-fidelity finite element based conceptual design and structural optimization tool developed to fill the critical analysis gap existing between lower order structural sizing approaches and detailed, often finite element based sizing methods for HWB aircraft concepts. Whereas prior versions of the tool used a half-model approach in building the representative finite element model, a full wing-tip-to-wing-tip modeling capability was recently added to HCDstruct, which alleviated the symmetry constraints at the model centerline in place of a free-flying model and allowed for more realistic center body, aft body, and wing loading and trim response. The latest version of HCDstruct was applied to two ERA reference cases, including the Boeing Open Rotor Engine Integration On an HWB (OREIO) concept and the Boeing ERA-0009H1 concept, and results agreed favorably with detailed Boeing design data and related Flight Optimization System (FLOPS) analyses. Following these benchmark cases, HCDstruct was used to size NASA's ERA HWB concepts and to perform a related scaling study
Abrasion resistance of sustainable green concrete containing waste tire rubber particles
The development of new environmental friendly concretes such as rubberized concrete is being promoted due to the environmental problems created by the waste tire rubber. Every year millions of tires are discarded, thrown away or buried all over the world, representing a very serious threat to the ecology. In this study, we analyse the potential of waste tire rubber particles as a partial substitute for fine aggregates in normal strength and high strength cement concrete and the resistance to abrasion has been measured. Statistical Analysis was carried out to strengthen the results obtained from experiments. The results show that the use of tire rubber particles can improve the abrasion resistance of concrete, and this can ensure its applications in pavements, floors and concrete highways, or in places where there are abrasive forces between surfaces and moving objects. BOB-RED queue management for IEEE 802.15.4 wireless sensor networks
This study is aimed at exploring why many economists propose a transfer scheme and debt mutualisation for the Eurozone. This would equip the Eurozone with better tools to deal with an economic shock, like the 2010-2012 sovereign debt crisis, thus making it more financially stable. After the theoretical presentation, the study presents a unique institutional design with an EU Treasury that manages debt mutualisation and a transfer scheme as well as other competences that address other present economic challenges. Crucial to the study are the issues of moral hazard and adverse selection that arise when thinking of European economic integration.L’objectiu del treball és explorar la raó per la qual molts economistes proposen un sistema de transferències fiscals i la mutualització del deute a l’Eurozona. The Perfect Binary One-Error-Correcting Codes of Length 15: Part I--Classification
A complete classification of the perfect binary one-error-correcting codes of
length 15 as well as their extensions of length 16 is presented. There are 5983
such inequivalent perfect codes and 2165 extended perfect codes. Efficient
generation of these codes relies on the recent classification of Steiner
quadruple systems of order 16. Utilizing a result of Blackmore, the optimal
binary one-error-correcting codes of length 14 and the (15, 1024, 4) codes are

‘Here to support anybody who needs to come’? An investigation of the provision for EAL pupils in secondary school libraries in England
This paper presents the findings of a mixed methods investigation of the effectiveness of provision for
EAL pupils by secondary school libraries in England. Data from a quantitative survey of secondary
school librarians are triangulated with those of qualitative interviews with staff responsible for EAL
provision. A picture emerges of a hybrid environment which addresses a number of the educational,
cultural and social needs of EAL learners, but in which a series of barriers to effective provision are
also identified. Recommendations are made to key stakeholder groups for the short and long term
improvement of EAL provision, and for further research
